914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Brake question

Posted by: MrRecord Jan 5 2006, 02:56 AM

Earlier today the brakes were fine, engaging about halfway down the pedal, then I practically had to push the pedal to the wall to get brakeage. Is there a short answer for this? I can get the car to slow, but only after I'm pushing all the way down. It's a 1970 914. Thx! ohmy.gif

Check for leaks, and check the reservoir fluid level first. Did you try pumping the brake pedal?

Leaks can be in any line or hose, and could be coming from the back of the master cylinder where it enters the pedal cluster box at your feet. Let us know what you find, then we can direct you further.

You wouldn't happen to be running SS braided brake hoses, would you? The Cap'n

leak ...

check fluid level first, but i'm pretty certain it's leaking somewhere.
check on the floor around the pedal cluster, a failing master cylinder can actually leak inside the car.
check on all 4 brake calipers.
check the master cylinder from under the car. you'll have to remove the protective shield that covers the front suspension.
