914World.com _ 914World Garage _ heartbroken in Nashville - need advice

Posted by: DrMike Jan 8 2006, 02:26 PM

Hello! I'm a newbie, but have been reading the board for months. I purchased a beautifully restored 914-6 about 4 months ago. Gorgeous car, fantastic drive (needs 2nd gear syncho). 2 weeks ago, my youngest son was home from college when a woman pulled out in front of him. In avoiding her and child, he got to experience snap oversteer. He is Bondurant trained. The result is in the pictures below. I would like to save the car '71-6 w/ m471. I have no restoration skills. I need advice an two points. First, is it reasonable to consider fixing it? Cost will have some bearing. Second, if yes, then any experience/recs near Nashville?

ohmy.gif Dang, sorry man. It hurts to look at the photos. Good luck.

Thanks, I'll e-mail Perry.

DrMike,

First I want to say, I am so sorry & glad everyone is ok. It's only a piece of metal, but what a beautiful 914 it was. Having said all that it hurts my eyes to look at those pictures. Everytime a rare one bites the dust it really hurts. Suggest you take time to evaluate all options. Take it to a reliable shop for a $$ estimate. You may want to sell (as is) to someone with the skills to repair. I would hate to see it sold for it's parts. The car is too valuable. Feel free to get lots of help from this group.

Tom
BTW
I know where there is a local (original-yellow) 1971-6 that can be restored into a M-471. It can be purchased for around $10K (it has a few rust issues). If I remember correctly M-471 packages has to be on a 1971 (not 1970).

Posted by: Jeff Bowlsby Jan 8 2006, 03:03 PM

In addition to Perry, there is also Don Ramsay at Air Cooled Classics in Knoxville if that is convenient.

Posted by: SirAndy Jan 8 2006, 03:09 PM

outsch! ohmy.gif

the good news, i have seen worse. you'll need to find a shop with a celette bench to straighten the chassis out, then repair the crunched sheetmetal ...

it can be done and IMHO you *should* repair this car.
914/6 are rare enough as is and if this is indeed a factory optioned m471 car ...

here's a thread of how Udo Fry's factory GT was repaired after a crash at the Nürburgring ...

Good advise from Bowlsby & Sir Andy.

I second the vote on Don Ramsay @ Air-cooled-classics in Knoxville. He knows his 914-6er stuff. I would get his $$ estimate.

DrMike if you need help determining the car's value for insurance purposes let us help. I would think insurance money will be a biggie as long as you document the true value of the car. As Andy said hopefully it's a real 914-6 M-471 car.

Have it taken to Stephen's Auto Paint and Body, my dad used him for all his work on his 911s when we lived in Nashville. As I remember he specialized in highline European makes.

That's a very nice car. And it can be fixed. It should be fixed. Expecially if it's a factory M471.

Be sure who ever repairs the car has a Cellette Dedicated Bench for the chassis. They can rent the fixtures to re-set the chassis the way the factory reccomends the car be repaired. There is a shop ( Yeamans) in the Palo Alto area? (Scott Yeaman?) that owns a set of fixtures. So If you can find a Shop in TN that has a Cellette Yeaman's may be able to assist.

Hello Sir,

I am sorry to see what has happened to one of the most beautiful, and rarest 914-6 cars I have ever seen. I have provided two links here to a shop in Mass, Precision Automotive Restorations , Marc Allin is the owner. I realize that is not that close to you, but this car is worthy of repair. Marc may also have advice on the repair. Best of Luck to you in whatever you decide with your 914-6.

So sorry to see your gourgous car messed up, sort of makes your stomack just lock up looking at it. Makes my damaged door like not much compared to what happened to yours.

When they fixed my door, they used some new procedure called "metal finishing", at least that's what they called it, anyway, they were able to fix the door without using any bondo, took longer and cost a couple of hundred more than the push it out and bondo it. The 6 is black and there are no ripples in the door after the repairs. Who ever did it at the shop I took it too is definetly a artist with metal.

Yes your car is worth saving, the 6's are getting rare and with the factory options you have, even rarer.

Good Luck, Don

The better news...no serious injury.

Stoddard Porsche up in Willoby Ohio usta advertise having a Cellet straightener and had pics of a 914 being straightened.

They usta make a lot of Porsche's 356 sheet metal parts in their shop. Had some deal with the factory and had the blueprints to work from.

Pics usta show 906's and 904's in their showroom as examples of resto work.

The current plan is to fix it, if I can. I miss going down to the garage just to look at it. I t was a fantastic drive, so much more connected to the road than current cars.
Mike

Posted by: flesburg Jan 11 2006, 08:37 PM

IF you decide not to rebuild it, buy the wreck from the insurance company, and post the car here.

I for one would be interested, and I'm sure there are about a hundred others that would be as well.

I wrecked one worse than that (a lot worse), and it was repaired. I did a lot of the work, but had the chassis pulled and some structural metal repaced (firewall back) at a shop with a chassis puller.

If you have it pulled, ask them if you can come in and watch on the day they pull it. AMAZING!!!

agree.gif an original 6 is a must retore, if possible, if it's a true m471, it would be a crime to not fix it! gorgeous car...

Posted by: Al Meredith Jan 11 2006, 08:55 PM

Suggest you check with George Hussey at Automobile Atlanta, No telling what kind of parts he may have for that body style, I think he has a couple.

Posted by: JOHNMAN Jan 11 2006, 09:03 PM

Dad, you are so kind.

I totaled my Dad's car (our current track car) WAY WAY worse than that one and it is still my favorite car to drive. Thanks to a man who knew how to properly use his frame straightening equipment.

DrMike,

You can have it fixed properly and it can look for the most part exactly like it did. It definately was and can be again a very beautiful car. Patience will be required as this repair will take a considerable amount of time to complete.

I wish you the best of luck.

Posted by: flesburg Jan 11 2006, 09:15 PM

Thanks for the clearification Johnman.

However, for my final 2c worth, I disagree with Al Meredith tho.

I would keep the car as far away from George as possible, which is to say do not even think about going south east of Nashville...especially toward Atlanta.

Dr Mike,

I'm finishing up a -6 restoration (see my blog) and will offer any help/advice I can if you end up doing work on it yourself. You'll find loads of supportive folks here.

I'm very glad you've decided to repair this beautiful car!

The first pic you posted was my desktop for the longest time (not sure where I got

the pic) and I loved that car. Thank God no one was hurt. I can't imagine how

your son felt killing his dads mistress. But there is light at the end of the tunnel

and this time it isn't a train. Looks like they are doing a wonderful job on it. She'll

be as good as new in no time. You should name her phoenix, (Iknow I spelt that

wrong) rising up from the ashes...

Nice job!!! Great to see the car was saved and will return to the road.

Is or was the car chassis straightened on a Clette bench? How do you check to see if a car is straight after a crash like this?
