Tomorrow it all starts.
Gonna break it all down and start the body work.
I hope to have it DONE by next Friday.
Brandon at Altissimo Restoration (707-253-paint) will be doing the bulk of the work.
I get to do the disassembly/reassembly, welding, rear flare work, sanding, some sanding and more sanding.
Car will be factory color light ivory with bright metalic red rally stripes and the 7"steel wheels to match stripes.
I'll be filling the side marker and antenna holes.
Rear ducktail spoiler will go from black to white and the targa top will be smooth painted with the stripes over the top of both.
Any advice?
KT

It is going to look cool Trekkor...got any drawings?
When you going to get some lighter wheels?
-Britain
No drawings. Stripes will be W-I-D-E with little pinstripes on each side.
No wheel plans. I need 7's.
KT
1 week?! I've had 2 p-cars stripped and painted. Each took 1 year. If you count lingering electrical issues, figure 2 years each. good luck, but uh,
why not do staggered tires?
7's fron 8's in back
what rear flare work are you gonna do?
does have 8's bump you into another class for ax?
get some real wheels... 5 lug of course...
IIWM, (but it's not) I'd look into vinyl stripes so they could be removed when I decided I didn't like them any more.

How about some progress pics - before, during and after.
Thanks
Trekkor,
If you get your car back and completed before I do I am going to be really PO'd.
Seriously,
good luck with your body and paint work. The paint scheme sounds great!
Let's see, that will be two very smooth shiney track cars at GGR events this season.
Don't count me out, I picked up my AA steel GT flares today and have talked to Mark about welding them on and doing the botox on the AA wrinkles. I have a straight body with one decent dent. I want to smooth the targa top remove the sail panel vinyl, fill in the antenna and side marker holes and have the car painted outside only by season start. So we may have 3 shiny 914's debuting this year.
ok, if I was standing there...I would cough and say cough cough bs cough cough...
Very nice. I am beginning to think that I won't have my car ready until the TT#2 or at least the first CDS event at BW.
Cursed body/paint guy is stringing me along. Was supposed to be painted this past weekend. I think that it didn't happen.
Oh well, just have to keep thinking about how nice it will be to be all shiney and smooth when I finally get it back.
One week sounds pretty quick to me too....Unless you are going to be there like 15+ hours per day to help out. Body work, welding holes, flaring fenders, strip paint and prime and paint.....more power to you to get it done Trekkor.
Don't forget about the front spoiler....if the back one has stripes the front should too.

Here's how I stretched the fenders to the limit.
Port-a-Power!
I cut a 2x4 with the same profile of the inside of the fender and used hydrolic power to bring the fender lip to 11.25" from the inner fender well.
Check this out.
Attached image(s)
how much did the inner fender deflect?
neat idea.
Do you heat the fenders as you stretch them?
I put a 4x8 along the length of the inner. It didn't seem to deflect at all.
Also hammer and dollied the fender lip flat.
Attached image(s)
Interesting use of hydraulics...jaws of life
Did you get any unwanted ripples in the quarter panel after the streeeeetch?
I was very happy with the results. One of the fasteners that connects to the rocker panel made a pop noise!
It shouldn't need to much hammer work at all. The profile looks pretty natural to me.
No heat used.
KT

Looks good from that last pic. Profile looks about what I had on my 914-6 that I could run 225s on 7s with no problems at all.
It looks like alot of tire under there.
Bet you didn't need much sanding on your new roof!
Nice work Trekkor -
Brandon and Mark are just great; always do what they say.
Now, on to the metal work!
I filled the channels between the front fenders and the flat section below the winshield.
Heres the channel and antenna hole prepped.

Trekkor,
Are you stripping it all the way down to bare metal, or just rough areas?
The body looks pretty straight as it is.

There are some areas on the trunks and doors that have bubbles.
Those places will get the most aggressive prep work.
The rest will be a goof scuff before the epoxy primer/sealer goes on.
Also, any areas where I find cracking old bondo get the bare metal treatment.
Power sanders and 36/40 grit are my friend.

$3050 out the door, all inclusive. i take it apart. antenna and lower sail panel trim delete, color match a smooth top that i have. L96D(silver metalic) 2-stage. i thought about a road trip via los poncho's, fly home-fly down, drive back. roughly the same ammount after everything is totaled up and no worries about a long drive home with the new paint. i've never had a qoute under $5500 local, and that's with me taking it apart. it's nice when you can look at the painters work first hand. i don't care about a photo album full of pictures. he'll assure me of a completion date.

That last stripe looked great. Makes me start to think about some vinyl.....
I took this pic last year at the rained out GGR-TT at Sears.

I think my whole scheme is a subliminal flashback to this car
Attached image(s)
That car used to belong to Chuck Davis. It had a 2.7RS motor in it then. That is the motor that is now in Larry Sharp's '74 Carrera.
It has been around our series for many years in several itterations.
I forget who the new owner is, but he still attends most of our TTs. Chuck now has a older 911 chassis with FG 993 body work and a larger twin plug motor...possibly a 3.6L.
Nice car none the less.
Show me a pic of that bug!
Is it an oval or a split?
Must be an oval, judging by the front turn signals. IIRC, splits had semiphores.
Also check sirandys thread on his 3.6 conversion, there is a pic of the rear.

Fenders cave in when you filled the side markers? If so, I had the same thing happen to mine.
No cave in. I found some old bondo . Wanted to bump it out a little better before the new filler.
I was there from 8:30am to 7:00pm today with an hour for lunch
The driver side door was pretty bad. I sanded it to bare metal over 75% of the surface. The old paint was loose and I kept finding surface rust that was covered over last time.
This is the door that blue painter's tape used as temp a/x numbers would pull the paint off at the end of the day.
Tomorrow all the body work should be completed and ready for primer on wednesday.
KT
The entire car is now rough sanded and filler is on all panels except the rear trunk and driver side rear qtr.
Tomorrow we sand out the car to 80 grit and prime and guide coat in the afternoon/early evening.

Dude paints without a mask...
Does he have any brain cells left
trekkor has a rear spoilier, so I bet that's what the holes are for.
The metal glaze ends up being transparent in many areas after sanding.
Bondo is funny stuff in the way that it makes you think, "It must be thick".
Brandon assured me that the primer would be thicker than most of the bondo.
Yep, rear spoiler mounts.

Must be something going on with painters......
Noticed a long time ago that painters:
1. Like pornography- stacks of magazines and calendars in every paint shop I been in... Not that there is anything wrong with that.
2. Usually a "little" wierd...... One guy at one plant wore black shorts, silver suspenders and a black bowler with a silver stripe,
his buddy usta spray the paint and sniff the fog to see if the mix was right....
And at another plant, watched a guy run around the paint shop like a monkey and almost deck someone.... :
3. Don't use masks....
Ken

Yep, you are definitely going to be done before I get mine back!
Mine is in primer as we speak and is "supposed" to be painted by this weekend. I think I have heard this song before
It is going to look great when done Trekkor, and your design for the stripes and #s looks very cool.
If you are going to do a double stripe, how about one in Red metallic and one in blue metallic. With a round white number background. Give you a modern interpretation of the Brumos cars from the late '60s.
I am still trying to decide what I am going to do with my numbers. Numbers only, probably white or bright yellow. Or round white background with bright orange numbers.
Whats the difference between using metal glaze and bondo?
Beauty!!! Keep up the great work!!!
Are you going to paint the PVC brake cooler thingy's to match?
Looking good Trek
The bondo is good for thicker applications and first coats.
The metal glaze is very smooth and viscous. Consistancy of pudding
You can spread the metal glaze so thin you can see through it and no pin holes.
Great for topping, like on my trunks. I sanded through to bare metal all over both of them due to little rust bubbles.
The metal glaze is applied just a little thicker than the paint on the car before sanding. Expensive, though. Around $20 a pint.
KT
We used about a gallon of bondo on this car
But, about 80% of that got sanded off.
Here's the rundown on coats:
4 coats primer yesterday
tomorrow:
after block sanding and spot putty, wet sand with 400 grit.
