The bottom race in the differential housing is loose....not a good thing. Has anyone come up with a succesfull fix short of replacing the differential housing?
For those unaware as to WHY this is an issue, it spins, it makes a bigger path, it allows slop in the shaft and things get cocked and things then explode.....
Typical weak spot in the 915, especially when a 3.6 is driving it.

cases are big $$$ - check out wevo, they'll install a new retainer. around 1500 for both housings, iirc.
there's always Porsche's solution :-) ...

Yes Alan...the 911 trans decided to give up second gear on a downshift.....there's another thread floating around on the tear down and clean up....
I've been looking at Wevo's site. Spoke with Hayden on the phone....nice guy...answers on a Saturday.....
I'm trying to avoid the 1500 dollar fix....obviously.

On the retainer from WEVO....I don't believe that this is a total fix for one that is already loose.....

If your going to replace the case anyways, couldn't you scuff the outer area of the bearing race and the inside of the case and use some JB Weld around the contact area? You wouldnt be able to remove it once hardened but that's what you want... Once that race is gone, tha case would be gone...
Don't laugh, that stuff works minor miracles in high pressure situations.... =-))
When you look at how these transmissions have lasted....how they were originally built and the fact that the NEW parts are BEND OVER here they come.....you might want to consider the long term.
I've known of the race problem for years.....matter of fact Assholio (Brad) mentioned it a few years back....most shops will ball peen hammer the sides, or cut a keyway and set a check key in it....but they all fail.
I plan on keeping this ride for a LONG time and to do so, is to do it right.....CH from Renegade sent me a PM on a guy that MAY have an alternative.....will see what he says....but it's looking like a new upgraded/refurbished differential case from WEVO may be the right thing to do.....

Find a good machinist. Bore the hole .06 OS....on location.
Have em' make an OS new bushing.....shrink to fit.....2-3 thou interference... out of similar hardness material. WAG at about 500 bucks.

I was gonna say get it machined round and press in a new oversized race.
They are obtainable...
BUT, I would go for the Wevo solution.
It seems alot more stable and alot less likely to wear out...Stainless bridle looks like the way to go.
Your in there, just do it once.
I like 914's, I just keep opening them till I found one that was tight...
But, with that one, its cheaper to fix what you got.

I would Grind a slot in the back of the race, install it with JB, then drill a keyway in the case using the slot you ground in the race as a guide. maybe 1/8", then install a 1/8" round key made from a drill bit shank to pin both pieces from moving. Use JB on the pin too. Sounds crude, but we used to do that to Aluminum case Muncie 4 speeds back in the day. They used to stretch the main shaft bearing hole causing the bearing to spin in the housing.
edit: BTW: By grinding the slot in the back of the race, installing it in the case, Then drill it inplace you aviod distorting the race.
Again, sound a little crude, but I've done it and drag raced with a case fixed like this.

Please, whatever you do...do it correctly the first time. Instead of ruining the case with all your makeshift solutions, either sell the case with the knowledge that it needs fixing, get it fixed by WEVO, or brake down and find a good one. IMHO, there are less and less good cases around so don't screw up another one and get this one fixed.

Ah....the 1500 dollar for a core then rebuild it fix....OK....
