I got my side mirrors I've been looking for a long time.. 935 Race Mirrors.. I know they are almost completly useless.. but they look AMAZING on the car! And its nt that difficult to turn your head and see if anyone is behind you.. I will post pictures later.. I got them from Better bodies motorsport in san diego.. very nice guys! they gave me some pointers on where I can locate the rest of the stuff on my list popcorn[1].gif

Yesterday I went home to John Rogers to look at his car.. It took me about 1h 30min to find it, normally a 30min ride from my house, but I got scared when I saw a sign saying "last US exit" then you know you're way of course haha..

If anyone haven't seen his car... masterpice! It is a race car so its not what I want.. But F/G doors/lids/flares etc.. didnt see it run but very nice. And after seeing his car I know I wil rivit on my flares.. looks very good! and the fact that they are an easy replacement is something I like!

Stay tuned 914-X Lovers out there!

When I talked to John last night he kinda talked me into letting them strip the car to bare metal.. since i noticed (when i put on the reflector) that i think my paint came from walmart.. it looks good on the outside, but it as almost 5mm thick.. (sorry only metrics) original color is bahia red..

As for color.. wanna help me out? I'm deciding between (k, dont kill me now, dont know the porsche names so i use others) Ferrari Red.. (Racing Red) ,Bright Yellow.. (i know my car could use those xtra HP you get from yellow paint) even considerd a blue of some sort.. if you wanna help.. I'm feeling Racing Red now, since that has always been a dream color)

I will paint the targa bar and targa, take all the chrome of. (has anyone done that with the vent windows??) also put rubber around the windsheild.

Posted by: guiltless Feb 13 2006, 08:58 PM

I am particularly partial to Pearl White for some reason. Or anything candy.

Posted by: Heeltoe914 Feb 13 2006, 09:02 PM

the rubber you wont to put on your car around the windshield is from a Camero I think 76 to like 86. Go to the Chevy dealer ask for window trim of the years mentioned. The rubber looks like a t Flat on top and two bitting ribs that fall into the window track of your 914. Hope this helps.

the rubber for the windshield is coming from our friends south of the boarder..

I'm talking about the chrome parts of the Vent windows.. Ours has chrome, 911's (later ones) have black aluminum or somethign like it.. lets say plastic to be sure you know what i mean... is there a replacement for ours? or is it just powder coating that is the cure..

haha, i actually wanted it shiny blue with yellow stripes.. but that was a while back, and i realized people back home would laugh at me.. the swede driving around in Cali with the swedish flag on the car.. aha.. maybe i should start Race, and ask for sponsorship from IKEA while im at it av-943.gif

true swedish???

Posted by: alpha434 Feb 13 2006, 10:52 PM

Just do big, contrasting yellow stripes. And add shiny silver little stripes. Most people won't realize it immediately. Most people here won't realize it at all.

Use Silicone, easy to remove if needed, with razor blade. Black vinyl on inside of glass to cover installation.

rivited race car.. I like the look with the right color combination.. chrome rivets on a GT Silver would look good.. was thinking of getting them painted but I dont see why?

Posted by: Aaron Cox Mar 22 2006, 05:25 PM

so they already cut the old fender chunks out? cool.....

i was just wondering what adhesive product you were going to use to keep it from cracking....

rivets are cool smile.gif

gonna get some big ol 5 lug wheels?

Fenders all cut and ready..
do you see the shape of the 916 front? does it look ok to you guys or is there a gap between hood/lip? maybe just me, have never seen one IRL though just photos.

rivets = no cracks right? i think i read it right..

oh 5 lug.... yes! I just had a long talk to Clayton about it. I have been looking for options on doing it but looks like im looking at the wrong places. front struts for 600? front end for 1100? maybe everyone else is getting killer deals and Aaron, by now you probably guessed that i NEVER get any deals (if you consider what i pay for body)

ok here is the plan..

GT Silver
Rivet Flares
916 front/rear
5-lug
17" wheels, new style porsche or sport.
suby engine

and the list adds on as I go.. I'm thinking it will be all done by xmas or so.. body is first step, then breaks/susp/wheels...

Posted by: Aaron Cox Mar 22 2006, 05:38 PM

im pretty sure i can find you a post 72 911 front end for a few C notes...

if you need the lagreger breaks (yada yada $$$$) an SC front end can be had for under 800.....

call eric shea for the rear... 400 bones and you got new trailing arms with bearings bushings and 5 lug hubs done smile.gif

I'm just thinking...

Couldn't adding something like a spoon mirror, couldn't you then make a full side window and have enough room in the door to roll the window up and down completely.

I walked down to Los Panchos today.. Still a little scary I must say.. Anyways. Wanted to see where they were with body work. I got some photos from Joe Buckle yesterday but they were a little fuzzy but great thanks to Joe for taking them smilie_pokal.gif They are done with the flares, rockers and rear bumper as of now. The front bumper needs more fitting, one side was way off alignment. So they are working on that and finishing all the welding. it was way more weldning than i expected but thats a good thing. So left to do is sanding everything smooth, some bondo and then paint. hopefully by next week I can enjoy a full day of assemble my car!

todays photos

Some say its as easy as changing battery on your flash light. To me this is the same as climbing to the top of mount everest.. As you can see I started with my engine today. I'm only changing out gaskets and seals and fix some minor parts while im in there.

First of all, I had to do this myself, dont know anyone who could help me.. So it took longer than I was expecting. I got some parts off already. Even got the clutch and flywheel, noted lots of oil behind the flywheel, is that normal or could that be the oil leak that I had?? I feel like a blind person looking for a dimond ring in a field of grass.. since I have no clue really what to do and more importantly, what not to do.

but here are some pics from today.

feel free to add your .02 about what to do etc..

Well Chris, looks like it is coming along. I mentioned a lot of welding I think and it is always a good idea to see what is under the paint so you have an good idea of how much work goes into making one of our rust buckets look so good! Can't wait to see how the silver comes out.

Yea you were right. it was WAY more welding than I expected. However, I got a lil worried when I was down there now. when you were with me we asked them to strip the paint.. if they say its going to be ready by sunday how are they going to have time for that?

I will post pictures here when I picked it up.

If you aren't busy sunday you are more than welcome to follow me down there..

Posted by: john rogers Mar 27 2006, 08:10 PM

Let me know on Sat as the Mexicali race I was going to do this weekend has been canceled due to the pavement being too broke up. They might not strip it all but sand that top coat off or if they do strip it it with only two paint jobs it will take about 4 or 5 hours.

Posted by: cbenitah Apr 2 2006, 09:30 PM

Since I couldn't pick up the car today I worked on the engine for a few hours.
Did some major cleanup on it.. all you see took 3h.. and trust me i scrubbed alot

I found some areas where I need your help..

#1 In the first pic you see the main rear seal, it shouldn't be leaking that much right?
#2 how do I get the seal off?
#3 should I take it apart completly? (just trying to fix my oil leak)
#4 Tranny, should I even touch it? heard so many stories about messing it up..

I think putting it back together will be th emost difficult part. I am thinking replacing as much as possible when it comes to hoses and such, am I right?

I really need your help on this one. Thanks

Posted by: 914-8 Apr 3 2006, 03:34 PM

no, the rear main seal shouldn't be leaking that much. That think looks like it's totally gushing.

It also looks like the seal isn't sealing right - looks like it sitting in there and mating up to the crank oddly. Like the seal isn't in far enough. It doesn't look like the sealing surface on the seal is mating up to anything! It should ride on the crank surface, but it looks like it's basically just flapping in the wind.

Posted by: jd74914 Apr 3 2006, 04:01 PM

agree.gif

I just tore mine apart this weekend and that seal looks like its comming out. How did the flywheel look?

(If you're going to pull apart the case I would recomend putting in new bearing. If you do put in new bearings make sure you have a really big puller for the one on the crank. Sorry for the dissertation.)

It is just a ring around everything, doesnt really touch anything.. And I dont know what the thin silver ring is (part of the seal?) I was hoping not to break the case open since I can't do so myself.. Can I replace this seal as is right now? you can see in the pictures how far I am in tearing it apart.

Posted by: Dr Evil Apr 3 2006, 06:50 PM

You can replace that seal as is right now. Also, do not lose the shims on the end of the crank. They are needed to set your flywheel and stuff. wink.gif

There are thin shims that stack into the gap between the crank end and the case. You can see it indicated by the arrows.

They are not for leak protection, they are to set the play of your crank shaft. If you are missing them that is a bad thing, but I bet they are there and hard to remove.

They are #9 in this pic.

Chris,
Take a magnet and put it where the arrows point. They should come out as I believe they are magnetic. Just store them and remember to put them back. Also, you will need new flywheel bolts as they are a one use only type of thing.

Oh, Los Panchos.. They have had my car for almost 5-6 weeks I think it is.. AND ITS NOT DONE. So they keep telling me next week next week.

Looks more or less like it doesnt it.. Well, me and mark talked while working on it and I was eager to learn so we just keept taking parts off and he explained very well how and what not etc.. So it will be a "small" rebuild. no new parts just making sure the parts I have is ok to go basically.

Holy Shit Dr. Evil..

Mike, I didn't know you knew Mark..

Thats very kewl... Mark is a great guy.. purdy smart fella if ya ask me..

And opinionated like Jake. With a sense of humor like MikeZ and the care for people.. Like Slits.... (poor guy)

He has containers full of 914 and Type 4 stuff.
(and yes I have seen most of it..and the goods are for sale)

And he is a proficient Air Cooled mechanic. (plus he knows D & L jet)
He is also my favorite nut case. Kinda like me... But worse biggrin.gif

By the way... if you guys need 914 parts or a good mechanic In San Diego for air cooled. Just mail him....... you can contact Mark at his e-mail address "Limerickenigma@yahoo.com"

By da way Christopher... Good job...
Like I told ya brother. Just keep the faith..

I was thinking of a different Mark. I figured San Diego, helpfull, smarth guy = Mark G. Ah well, glad to see help is there anyway biggrin.gif

Posted by: cbenitah Apr 8 2006, 08:39 PM

I'm blown away. Mark knows what he is talking about. So I went into this wanting a re seal for my oil leak. Today we almost finished a top end rebuilt. My valves are so shiny after some magic. Look at the difference in the parts from yesterday, today they are sooo clean.

More to come.

After Los Panchos we went straight to Marks place and worked on the engine until 8.30 pm.. It was a long day but got a bunch done. Everything is cleaned now, the tin is painted and looks very nice. I didnt get to take any pictures of the most part of it since it was dark when we stoped working. But it is getting there on the engine side too. Mark helped me weld my heater boxes so they don't rattle any longer. Man do they look good painted.

Thanks again Mark for helping me!! smilie_pokal.gif smilie_pokal.gif

Los Panchos is one of those places where some times you wonder if it is worth the savings. The work is good enough, but the time frame sometimes sucks. Most of the dealings that I have heard of from guys that dealt with shops on this side of the boarder are about the same, though. It must be a budget painter thing confused24.gif

Mark is a stand up guy who works his a$$ of for you. But he is very careful about teaching me and letting me doing most of the work. Thats what I want and need. To be able to work on my car or at least have an understanding about it. Which in three days now is so much more than 9 months without that help..

Los Panchos does good job, look at my targa trim, or where it used to be. Now its gone, no more trim.. Looks very good.

quite a lot ...

i paid a lot of attention to my targa top and the seal as i was trying to make it water-proof and sound-proof and get rid of the "squiiiek" ...

at least on my car, the rear seal sits mostly on the targa bar and just the outer edge, kind of rolled up rubber lip, barely touches the top of the chrome trim ...

cool.gif Andy

PS: BUT, as well all know, not all 914s are created equal.
plus, i'm using a late model top on an early car. while they're quite different, i didn't think the overall length was different.
maybe it is?

Christopher,

Dude, your car is coming along nicely.

Did Los Panchos hit you up for extra bucks?

AND:

Whats your time frame for getting the engine back together?

Clayton

PS: I will either be down thursday or next next Sunday..
This is if I get back from palm springs in time.

Be careful when "rushing" them. They will want to please you at the cost of quality. I did not rush them on any of the cars that I had done, but on mine they were in a hurry to please me even though I told them (like I always did) that, "No tengo prisa. Solamente quero lo ser perfecto porfavor. Tienes tiempo." (I am not in a hurry. I just want it to be perfect please. You have time.)

I have found little things on my car that kinda pissed me off. Mainly because I do not live there any more and can not have them fix it. They will fix things if they are not right. The guy who did my mom's '74 VW bus didnt get the rust off of some spots before painting and it started to bubble through. Well, she took it down and had them fix it for free. She is MY mom and does speak fluent spanish, but I think that they would do it for any valued customer.

I am not planning on rushing them.. Its taken this long already, I can wait a little longer. They already missed a couple of spots that I saw yesterday. So they have to go back and fix that too..

Actually no. I went down and changed the color to a Porsche color... its in this thread on one of these pages. 2005 GT Silver Metallic. I love the color.

As for the rivits. They may be black further on but as of now no, just b/c of the door handles are still chrome so they look good together.

17" you said Aaron. I haven't decided. But probably some turbo twists. Not sure if I want the BBS racing look but thats yet to be decided. Any suggestions?!

I will do my best.

total bill was $3860

Work done:

Fitting 916 bumpers, GT Flares and rockers. Fixing all my rust, inside and outside. Taking of the chrome trims of the rear of the targa as well as grinding away the "flap" that the trim sits on. Fixing the waves on the side of the car. they spend alot of work on that.

I think that's it for now. I probably remember more as I go on.

Posted by: cbenitah Apr 25 2006, 08:41 PM

Did some more work on the car today. I installed front/rear trunk weather striping as well as both doors. My PO had painted the car WITH the striping on so it is ALL red. headbang.gif so now I have to get new ones. Well, I have to do so anyways but I was hoping it wasn't that bad as it is. But I painted it for now since I need the car ASAP.
clap56.gif

I had some issues trying to mount this piece, don't know the name of it. But for the front window where the targa sits, should there be 2 weather seals and the black ??? that has the sun visors on it. If anyone got a picture on how to it would be great.

Back to work tomorrow again. and yes, more pics will come later this week. Waiting for the sun to kick in

i'm thinking of taking mine down there, how much did you strip off the car?

from what you left did they mask off or just paint over , such as your wiring harness?

as cost goes can you break down paint , rust repair , body mods? just wondering to guesstimate what mine will run..

Thanks George

also are you going to the g &r bbq in riverside this weekend? if so bring the car, even if your towing it

I can't this weekend. [UNLESS all of you want to help me getting the engine in and running laugh.gif ] I will finish the engine and get it in the car. Too bad, but it has to be done. Then I'll be crusing around for BBQ's all over Cali.

A break down, basically look at my car before and after and you will have a good view. I did more work on it down there than most guys have done I think. They know its time consuming therefore price is up a little higher now than before. I think they said 800-1500 for paint only. Not sure though.

Posted by: Brad Roberts May 24 2006, 11:56 PM

Cris,

I ordered:

Oil filter
fan belt
spark plugs
intake boots
fuel filter

All the above will arrive by 9am

They didnt have in SD:

Plug wires
One cone screw for shift linkage

Contact SEan about the cross bar.

We will need CV gaskets also along with new CV bolt washers.
I'll order those tonight also.

I already have the intake gaskets. I'll give you those.

Not sure what you want to do about the tranny mounts. I would run the WEVO mounts, but they are pricey (best in breed however)

They require drilling. They dont fit the tub correctly, but you can use them. I'll order them today and have them in an hour or so. We will need them next week when we stab the engine and trans into the tub.

Pelican has em http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/9144/POR_9144_EXHmuf_pg1.htm.

1.7 and 1.8 have the same exhausts. Its the 2.0's that are different.

Posted by: Headrage Jun 3 2006, 04:30 PM

Chris,

If you're talking about the ones that go on the front and rear of the engine compartment I think they are nla.

I could only find the ones for the sides.

Posted by: Aaron Cox Jun 3 2006, 04:47 PM

engine bay seals? 1 front, 2 sides, and a rear seal.

the rear IS NLA

Well, its been a while since i have been on the club site and i now return to tell you my amazing story of the day!

I finally drove my car! Its been about 4 years since i last drove it and i remember having 2 working cylinders, bad suspension and a red car. Now the car is perfect for me, yes still under powered by a lot, needs a large engine, but oh man what a sweet car. After having different types of events i bought a 2002 boxster s and love that car! Although the drive today was by far better than driving the boxster!

Brad helped me finish up the car Sunday and today i drove from LA to SF roughly 400 miles or so. The koni adjustable was a bit hard at first, and it wasnt until i twisted them all they way to firm that they became good. not sure why but now they are perfect for driving, it corners like a dream clap56.gif

The boxster S muffler looks and sounds great! I am really glad i made B go thru the hard work of getting it to fit laugh.gif thanks btw!

I have so much to say but its hard, all i can say is AMAZING!!! Finally driving the project car i started with in 2005 was a great ending...

since the car will be FOR SALE starting now...

Wow! Haven't heard from you in a long time! Grats on finishing the car, but too bad you have to sell it. Put an ad in the classified section.

Posted by: Zaney May 5 2009, 09:18 AM

Nice car!!!

What engine ended up in it? No SubY?

beerchug.gif Nate

Posted by: cbenitah May 5 2009, 10:46 AM

No Suby unfortunately. Like I said i ended up with the boxster and am happy with that. Living downtown SF doesn't make much sense to have one car, so two is out of the question. Yes the car should have a larger engine but the re built 1.8 is really strong and I had fun driving it the 500+ miles I did Sunday/Monday.
