I am finally starting my Project that I have been waiting for.. This is the thread I will be updating the project..
My Parts are finally starting to show up, its not much now but it's a start...
Here is a pic of what I got so far, and more is coming..
914-X will also be explained for everyone in a couple of weeks..
enjoy!
any updates?
Got more parts today...
GT Flares 7" and 9"
GT Rockers
Wing
916 front
916 Rear
Looking forward to get them on the car, which would hopefully be next weekend or so..
wing?
factory spoiler? or straight up wing??
I got my side mirrors I've been looking for a long time.. 935 Race Mirrors.. I know they are almost completly useless.. but they look AMAZING on the car! And its nt that difficult to turn your head and see if anyone is behind you.. I will post pictures later.. I got them from Better bodies motorsport in san diego.. very nice guys! they gave me some pointers on where I can locate the rest of the stuff on my list
Yesterday I went home to John Rogers to look at his car.. It took me about 1h 30min to find it, normally a 30min ride from my house, but I got scared when I saw a sign saying "last US exit" then you know you're way of course haha..
If anyone haven't seen his car... masterpice! It is a race car so its not what I want.. But F/G doors/lids/flares etc.. didnt see it run but very nice. And after seeing his car I know I wil rivit on my flares.. looks very good! and the fact that they are an easy replacement is something I like!
Stay tuned 914-X Lovers out there!
Is there a boycott going on hers towards swedes Just curious since i have had 500 who have looked at the thread and no replys.. maybe this is not too interesting to you guys out there!
Oh well, I'm doing my best here and this is something I will be proud of!
you just wait and see
Cool.
Keep us posted!
Bring it on Christopher! Love to see other's projects posted. It inspires me and helps with ideas. It's a little slow here from time to time, so don't get wrapped up in how many replies you get.
So get to it!
christopher, I've been waiting for your followup post that was going to give us a glimpse of the final look, color, engine etc...... <!-- emo&:beer2: --><!-- endemo -->

I am particularly partial to Pearl White for some reason. Or anything candy.
the rubber you wont to put on your car around the windshield is from a Camero I think 76 to like 86. Go to the Chevy dealer ask for window trim of the years mentioned. The rubber looks like a t Flat on top and two bitting ribs that fall into the window track of your 914. Hope this helps.

Just do big, contrasting yellow stripes. And add shiny silver little stripes. Most people won't realize it immediately. Most people here won't realize it at all.
Went down today... talk about scary.. I got pulled over by the Mexican Cop. Last time I EVER go by myself.. But I made it without any fines or anything..
the car is coming along nicely, its supposed to be done by next weekend, but I told them the following instead. Changed my Paint Code as well.. found a secret folder in their office

yea thats what I was thinking. Using something to cover up the mounting.. silicone is a good idea.. no way I will screw these into the door. I'm welding the stock holes shut so i wont have any at all..
thanks for the pics..
Looks like your having them do a lot of work. What's the damage($). I'm sure it's going to come back spectacular.

Is that the same car that everyone was wrenching on at Joe's BBQ? If it is, holy smokes you have been busy!

im pretty sure i can find you a post 72 911 front end for a few C notes...
if you need the lagreger breaks (yada yada $$$$) an SC front end can be had for under 800.....
call eric shea for the rear... 400 bones and you got new trailing arms with bearings bushings and 5 lug hubs done

I'm just thinking...
Couldn't adding something like a spoon mirror, couldn't you then make a full side window and have enough room in the door to roll the window up and down completely.
I walked down to Los Panchos today.. Still a little scary I must say.. Anyways. Wanted to see where they were with body work. I got some photos from Joe Buckle yesterday but they were a little fuzzy but great thanks to Joe for taking them They are done with the flares, rockers and rear bumper as of now. The front bumper needs more fitting, one side was way off alignment. So they are working on that and finishing all the welding. it was way more weldning than i expected but thats a good thing. So left to do is sanding everything smooth, some bondo and then paint. hopefully by next week I can enjoy a full day of assemble my car!

Some say its as easy as changing battery on your flash light. To me this is the same as climbing to the top of mount everest.. As you can see I started with my engine today. I'm only changing out gaskets and seals and fix some minor parts while im in there.
First of all, I had to do this myself, dont know anyone who could help me.. So it took longer than I was expecting. I got some parts off already. Even got the clutch and flywheel, noted lots of oil behind the flywheel, is that normal or could that be the oil leak that I had?? I feel like a blind person looking for a dimond ring in a field of grass.. since I have no clue really what to do and more importantly, what not to do.
but here are some pics from today.
feel free to add your .02 about what to do etc..

Well Chris, looks like it is coming along. I mentioned a lot of welding I think and it is always a good idea to see what is under the paint so you have an good idea of how much work goes into making one of our rust buckets look so good! Can't wait to see how the silver comes out.

Let me know on Sat as the Mexicali race I was going to do this weekend has been canceled due to the pavement being too broke up. They might not strip it all but sand that top coat off or if they do strip it it with only two paint jobs it will take about 4 or 5 hours.
Since I couldn't pick up the car today I worked on the engine for a few hours.
Did some major cleanup on it.. all you see took 3h.. and trust me i scrubbed alot
I found some areas where I need your help..
#1 In the first pic you see the main rear seal, it shouldn't be leaking that much right?
#2 how do I get the seal off?
#3 should I take it apart completly? (just trying to fix my oil leak)
#4 Tranny, should I even touch it? heard so many stories about messing it up..
I think putting it back together will be th emost difficult part. I am thinking replacing as much as possible when it comes to hoses and such, am I right?
I really need your help on this one. Thanks

no, the rear main seal shouldn't be leaking that much. That think looks like it's totally gushing.
It also looks like the seal isn't sealing right - looks like it sitting in there and mating up to the crank oddly. Like the seal isn't in far enough. It doesn't look like the sealing surface on the seal is mating up to anything! It should ride on the crank surface, but it looks like it's basically just flapping in the wind.
I just tore mine apart this weekend and that seal looks like its comming out. How did the flywheel look?
(If you're going to pull apart the case I would recomend putting in new bearing. If you do put in new bearings make sure you have a really big puller for the one on the crank. Sorry for the dissertation.)

You can replace that seal as is right now. Also, do not lose the shims on the end of the crank. They are needed to set your flywheel and stuff.

There are thin shims that stack into the gap between the crank end and the case. You can see it indicated by the arrows.

Um, NO! The only thing like that is the shim that goes under the bolt heads when putting the flywheel on.

They are not for leak protection, they are to set the play of your crank shaft. If you are missing them that is a bad thing, but I bet they are there and hard to remove.
They are #9 in this pic.

Chris,
Take a magnet and put it where the arrows point. They should come out as I believe they are magnetic. Just store them and remember to put them back. Also, you will need new flywheel bolts as they are a one use only type of thing.
Today I met Mark.. I have never learned so much in one day as I did today. NOW I get it... I may not know it but I do get it.. The engine is coming along and will get cleaned tomorrow. Here are the pics from todays work.
Oh, Los Panchos.. They have had my car for almost 5-6 weeks I think it is.. AND ITS NOT DONE. So they keep telling me next week next week.

Holy Shit Dr. Evil..
Mike, I didn't know you knew Mark..
Thats very kewl... Mark is a great guy.. purdy smart fella if ya ask me..
And opinionated like Jake. With a sense of humor like MikeZ and the care for people.. Like Slits.... (poor guy)
He has containers full of 914 and Type 4 stuff.
(and yes I have seen most of it..and the goods are for sale)
And he is a proficient Air Cooled mechanic. (plus he knows D & L jet)
He is also my favorite nut case. Kinda like me... But worse
By the way... if you guys need 914 parts or a good mechanic In San Diego for air cooled. Just mail him....... you can contact Mark at his e-mail address "Limerickenigma@yahoo.com"
By da way Christopher... Good job...
Like I told ya brother. Just keep the faith..
Clayton
Sorry Clayton,
I was thinking of a different Mark. I figured San Diego, helpfull, smarth guy = Mark G. Ah well, glad to see help is there anyway
I'm blown away. Mark knows what he is talking about. So I went into this wanting a re seal for my oil leak. Today we almost finished a top end rebuilt. My valves are so shiny after some magic. Look at the difference in the parts from yesterday, today they are sooo clean.
More to come.

I biked down to our friends on the other side of the boarder today with mark.. Its coming along, the guy who worked on my car was sick for a week, so it is not finished. Closer but not yet there. they say next weekend. However its been next weekend the past three weeks now. Here are todays photos anyway

After Los Panchos we went straight to Marks place and worked on the engine until 8.30 pm.. It was a long day but got a bunch done. Everything is cleaned now, the tin is painted and looks very nice. I didnt get to take any pictures of the most part of it since it was dark when we stoped working. But it is getting there on the engine side too. Mark helped me weld my heater boxes so they don't rattle any longer. Man do they look good painted.
Thanks again Mark for helping me!!

Jeez,
I wish I knew Mark last year when I was there and rushing to get my car together
Los Panchos is one of those places where some times you wonder if it is worth the savings. The work is good enough, but the time frame sometimes sucks. Most of the dealings that I have heard of from guys that dealt with shops on this side of the boarder are about the same, though. It must be a budget painter thing

Dude, your car is coming along nicely.
Did Los Panchos hit you up for extra bucks?
AND:
Whats your time frame for getting the engine back together?

PS: I will either be down thursday or next next Sunday..
This is if I get back from palm springs in time.

Be careful when "rushing" them. They will want to please you at the cost of quality. I did not rush them on any of the cars that I had done, but on mine they were in a hurry to please me even though I told them (like I always did) that, "No tengo prisa. Solamente quero lo ser perfecto porfavor. Tienes tiempo." (I am not in a hurry. I just want it to be perfect please. You have time.)
I have found little things on my car that kinda pissed me off. Mainly because I do not live there any more and can not have them fix it. They will fix things if they are not right. The guy who did my mom's '74 VW bus didnt get the rust off of some spots before painting and it started to bubble through. Well, she took it down and had them fix it for free. She is MY mom and does speak fluent spanish, but I think that they would do it for any valued customer.

Wow, that looks really great.
I can't wait to too full size pics.
Hi Cris, Looking sweet (I love the silver), you've come a long way from pre-pimp my ride days. Keep it up.
Dan
Hot damm Chris, that is looking great. You picked a good color, Mercedes silver wasn't it?
Cris,
car really looks nice. Cool touch with the riveted-on flares.
Do you mind sharing with us the itemized total on the bill? Work done?
Thanks
Brian
chris - wha 17" wheels with porsche bolt pattern are you gonna get ?
, I'm interested in how much that kind of work cost ya..
Also, I think you should paint the rivets black. just my .o2
Did some more work on the car today. I installed front/rear trunk weather striping as well as both doors. My PO had painted the car WITH the striping on so it is ALL red. so now I have to get new ones. Well, I have to do so anyways but I was hoping it wasn't that bad as it is. But I painted it for now since I need the car ASAP.
I had some issues trying to mount this piece, don't know the name of it. But for the front window where the targa sits, should there be 2 weather seals and the black ??? that has the sun visors on it. If anyone got a picture on how to it would be great.
Back to work tomorrow again. and yes, more pics will come later this week. Waiting for the sun to kick in

chris the color looks great
i'm thinking of taking mine down there, how much did you strip off the car?
from what you left did they mask off or just paint over , such as your wiring harness?
as cost goes can you break down paint , rust repair , body mods? just wondering to guesstimate what mine will run..
Thanks George
also are you going to the g &r bbq in riverside this weekend? if so bring the car, even if your towing it
Looks great! black rivets would look good.
17's would look good. 225 45 17's with 255 40 17's Need 8.5in rims for the rear. fyi.

Cris,
I'm going to have a complete 9146 5 lug setup from a factory six ready next week if you want it. The brake pads are good and it has Koni Adjustable shocks.
This is complete front and rear setup.
Let me know...
I also want to know why you were pulled over down there. I'm hoping it didnt have anything to do with my trailer.

Its not moving much forward. Got the engine yesterday. Have done a top end rebuild. Now its sitting waiting to go in the car. May be driving in September

Put a rag in the oil fill port.
More body pics please! I'm painting mine same color next weekend (hopefully) and I need inspiration.
Looks great!
Cris,
lets chat this evening. I'll know more about the shop situtation.
B
Cris,
I ordered:
Oil filter
fan belt
spark plugs
intake boots
fuel filter
All the above will arrive by 9am
They didnt have in SD:
Plug wires
One cone screw for shift linkage
Contact SEan about the cross bar.
We will need CV gaskets also along with new CV bolt washers.
I'll order those tonight also.
I already have the intake gaskets. I'll give you those.
Not sure what you want to do about the tranny mounts. I would run the WEVO mounts, but they are pricey (best in breed however)
B
Thanks Brad!
How much is Pricey? Do I just need a simple stock one if I can find one? (hint hint guys)
GO with whatever you feel is needed. I am fine with what works, nothing fancy is needed for this right now.
Again Brad thanks for your help
Maybe someone will see the thread and give you the info on the cheapy square tube solid mounts. I can make them, I just dont have time.
B
chris. welt solid mounts rock for the price. still offer some dampening....
hockey puck type material. bout 50 bucks a pair
Aaron,
can you send me the pics you and Clayton shot up at the 914 guy's house here in SD? He has something like 9 tubs??
B
No no.. Weltmeister solid trans mounts
The parts came in. I'll pick them up this evening. Let me know where to drop them off, or if you can pick them up from the shop this evening. I'm going to pull apart a 912 engine for them tonight, but could drop the parts of afterwards.
B
the boomerang looking part right. I got confused since you spoke about mounts inside the engine bay last night. I will be at the rink until 9.30 tonight, I can swing by the shop if you are there that late?
got it...
911 Sport Mount, Can Be Used As 914 Transmission Mounts, 2 Per Car, 914 1.7/1.8/2.0 (1970-76), 914-6 (1970-72), Each
Brand: Meistersatz [Photo]
911-375-043-07-M61 $27.00
I like the price on this one... ok choice?
They require drilling. They dont fit the tub correctly, but you can use them. I'll order them today and have them in an hour or so. We will need them next week when we stab the engine and trans into the tub.
Contact Sean about the exhaust hanger and a 1.8 Bursch muffler.
B
Oh great. I found my muffler, looks very bad though, but I think I can use it. Maybe I should chec and see if there is one I could possibly use for backup.. When are you leaving the shop tonight?
I will leave around 9pm. It will only take about 2 hours to take apart the 912 engine.
Find a used Bursch for cheap.. You will thank me later.
Where is the rink? I'll come down and hang out with the MILF's
B
rofl brad...
"whats that scent you are wearing?"
"Porsche- 912"
The rink is in the food court inside the mall, you can acess it either from the mall or from the back of the rink, by sears and sports chalet entrance.. I will be on the ice, otherwise I'll be by my new desk inside the box office
Bursch, ok, I'll look around and see what I can find
Anyone
$270+tax for a bursch.. are they available used?
I put a $150.00 Sebring on my 2 liter after I rebuilt it. Looks, sounds and rusts like a Bursch but much cheaper.
Pelican has em http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/9144/POR_9144_EXHmuf_pg1.htm.
MeM?
I think its still where I was building the engine in the first place, not sure. Anyway its rusty and oily.. I'll consult with brad about what I should or should not use..
The Sebring would work fine, but our chances of finding a used Bursch are pretty good here in this area.
Aaron?
Have you figured out Cris isnt from this country? and know's very little about 914's?? LOL I barely understand your abbreviations for all these "parts". How in the HELL do you expect a newbie here on a school/sports Visa to know what you are talking about?? LOL
B
Brad, LOL
you said it all.. I think that was an awesome description.. Right on the money!
AA: I barely speak english here
ayuuup i'm from here and English is my only language and I can barely understand what Aarons talking about sometimes
Aa needs a dictionary made up for the rest of us.. then its easy to refer to page 320 if we are confused
quit ragging my ass. i explained the MeM reference.......the guy who built YOUR motor... and thats his screenname.
haha, I understood that.. I will look elsewhere though
you guys went thru all that for a good, reasonably priced used bursch for 2.0/4 he's?
k
It's worse than that Kevin:
We are looking for a used Bursch for 1.8 HE's!
Now, if Cris doesnt get mad, I'm going to ask out one of his Swedish girlfriends
She is a hottie!
B
Thanks for coming over with the parts Brad...
She is cute, she was also my roommate for 6 months.. Andshe did get excited about AX... Enjoy SF and I'll try to do something this weekend with all the parts I have now
Same room or different room ?? LOL
I thought she was pretty cool. Very nice young lady.
B
well................ a one bed room apartment.. two beds though (sometimes)
hahah... hmm.. lemme see, one day maybe
How fast do you want your car done?? ha ha
I know damn well she is sitting there with you.. snap a pic of her with yuor camera phone!!

If you're talking about the ones that go on the front and rear of the engine compartment I think they are nla.

IIRC, he's got the car up for sale.
WOW
Well, its been a while since i have been on the club site and i now return to tell you my amazing story of the day!
I finally drove my car! Its been about 4 years since i last drove it and i remember having 2 working cylinders, bad suspension and a red car. Now the car is perfect for me, yes still under powered by a lot, needs a large engine, but oh man what a sweet car. After having different types of events i bought a 2002 boxster s and love that car! Although the drive today was by far better than driving the boxster!
Brad helped me finish up the car Sunday and today i drove from LA to SF roughly 400 miles or so. The koni adjustable was a bit hard at first, and it wasnt until i twisted them all they way to firm that they became good. not sure why but now they are perfect for driving, it corners like a dream
The boxster S muffler looks and sounds great! I am really glad i made B go thru the hard work of getting it to fit thanks btw!
I have so much to say but its hard, all i can say is AMAZING!!! Finally driving the project car i started with in 2005 was a great ending...
since the car will be FOR SALE starting now...

Wow! Haven't heard from you in a long time! Grats on finishing the car, but too bad you have to sell it. Put an ad in the classified section.
Nice car!!!
What engine ended up in it? No SubY?
Nate
No Suby unfortunately. Like I said i ended up with the boxster and am happy with that. Living downtown SF doesn't make much sense to have one car, so two is out of the question. Yes the car should have a larger engine but the re built 1.8 is really strong and I had fun driving it the 500+ miles I did Sunday/Monday.
Awesome!!! Those rims look great!
Bummer it's going up for sale for you but somone is going to get a great looking car!
