914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Introducing Myself

Posted by: drewvw Feb 27 2006, 09:42 AM

Hello All,

I threw up a couple posts this weekend combing the site over, so I wanted to officially say hello. I am in the process of purchasing a 914 that I hope to get this weekend. I love this site, the community is so tight here! That's great.

You guys are scaring the bejeebus out of me though with some of the rust stuff. I am hoping not to spend a boatload of money on this car annually. I don't plan on driving it much, just around town on weekends.

Drew

Nice to meet ya...

Welcome Drew! So... where you getting the teener from? We live in the Salted Rust Belt so any teener up here is going to have "issues" unless they have been taken care of already. A lot of good resources up here around Mass. to help out if needed. Just ask.

Ohh and before I forget:

A fellow Mass guy alright! I know about the pics...like i said when I get it this weekend I will take some and post them.

No kidding about the salt belt, I've been scoping a couple 914s around here and most of them are pretty chewed up. This one looks to be solid, but I wont know for sure until I can start checking it out in detail. The longs and jackposts were done by a pro awhile back, and the PO took very good care of the car. He's owned it for 15 years and took good care of it. I bought it mostly because the guy seems to be an ideal owner.

well i figured I'd keep it humble until I get settled!

thanks for the warm invites...by the way this weekend I went through a 28 page post of one of the German members (forgot his name) who rebuilt the longs/hell hole for a blue 914. That was amazing! I was in awe.

HI Drew!

Welcome to the club. This place is without a doubt, the best resource for 914 information.

I'm pretty good with a car, but far from an "expert", and truthfully, I'd rather not spend my time "fixing" a car... I'd rather be "driving" it, you know?

I'm far from rich, but I didn't want to buy a beaten down rustbucket either, so I came up with as much cash as I could, then I just partially financed the rest of my car. I've never regretted it... cause with the exception of a battery, a fuel line, and regular maintenance, i haven't done a thing to it in the 3 years I've owned it. My payments? A whopping 50 bucks a month..... for a rust free, great running classic car.

I just figure you get more for your money if you spend a little more, and just get one thats already been well taken care of.... just my 2 cents. If you're interested, I financed through a bank called "Sovereign Bank"... I guess they handle financing classic cars quite a bit... got a great interest rate as well.

Good luck!! Welcome!!!!

Good luck with it Drew, This site is a great resource, as well as pelican parts tech articles. I just recently bought a 914 too, and I am by far not a mechanic, currently in process of complete engine rebuild and anytime I run into a problem I do a search here, if I dont find it i post the topic and usually have my answers within a hour.

Hey Drew,

Welcome aboard.I got a teener like half a year ago, and I haven't regretted it for a minute. Great little car, and the folks in 914club are a pretty cool group. A lot more comraderie (sp?) than I've found on other sites. And a ton of knowledge.

One thing I'd definitely recommend when you get your teener is to keep an eye out for a 914club event in your area. I was kinda lukewarm about going to the Red Rocks Classic last Sept., but man was it worth it. All sorts of people with a broad range of cars (mine was, ahem, at one end of the spectrum), more detailed knowledge about 914s than you can find at a specialists garage, and well, beer, scenery, door prizes, and beer. And its the one time you don't have to worry about breaking down...

About the rust, you might see if any local (to you) members would want to take a look at the car with you. There's a few special places where rust shows up that you might not notice. OTOH, in a cold salty place like Mass., I know a lot of people just put their teeners in storage for the winter.

If I had it all to do over again, the only thing I think I'd do differently is spend a little more on a car with an okay paint job. I had no idea how much paint would cost ! But hey, at least my car has character !

Cheers,
Jeff

I figured it was only a matter of time before the Red Sox comments, I guess I did it to myself with the avatar.

I appreciate the reassurances on the maintainability of the car. I did go the route of spending a bit more for a car I knew had been treated right, so I am really hoping that pays off in the end.

I bought my ghia when I was 14 and it was a complete rust bucket. I spent high school restoring the car so I have some previous experience, but i dont really want to go through that again, at least right now. I have a 100 year old house that needs to be the first priority.

I almost went the british route (big fan of the early brits), but you guys are making me feel good about my choice!

I'd definitely like to join up with some east coasters once I get settled and figure out the car a bit. My first shipment of POR-15 is on the way!

good to have a fellow sox fan around. I checked out your blog, that one section looks pretty bad but ah well. You doing the work yourself or have a contact?

Posted by: Sparky Feb 28 2006, 09:14 AM

There is nothing wrong with being a Sox fan! We are the most misunderstood group ever (next to 914Club members). How many times can a team break your heart? We are like sick little dogs, no matter how many times we are beat, no matter how poorly we are treated we keep coming back for more.

The RedSox mantra:

Well, Next year...

Amen brother! Its gotten easier lately though, with the amazing WS win and arse kicking of the yankees. Can't wait for the season to start.

sorry got a little off topic there...

So you live around worcester eh? Maybe when the weather warm we could meet up in the middle and do a 914 cruise. I have a couple buddies with 944s that would like to join.

do we like those guys or not? Haven't heard much chatter here with regard to those cars.
