TALIMENA 1 is BACK!!!
Okay... it's that time of the year again! If you live in the great southwest and are just dying for a teener gathering, you're in luck! This is a no fees, no frills, no t-shirt, cheap motel gathering of teener owners with an emphasis on DRIVING.
Details:
Saturday, April 22nd
10:00am (meet in parking lot)
Kiamichi Inn (504 Dallas St.)
Talihina, OK ( http://www.talihinacc.com/ ).
For reservations call 918-567-2243. Tell "Kitty" you're with the 914 group.
These are new rates (still cheap):
1 bed 1-2 people 38.41
2 bed 2-3 people 49.39
3 bed 3-5 people 60.36
We will plan on heading out from Kitty's parking lot around 11:00am.
I will bring two of my 2-way radios. If you have some, bring'em... along with your mobil phone.
Remember, this is not a drive around the block - be adequately prepared... or be prepared to be adequately humiliated. Extra parts and tools are strongly advised.
We have 120 miles of beautiful driving in store.
The tour will be similar in nature to the MUSR road tours, in that there will be opportunities for some "spirited" driving, but it is not a race, nor is it a competition. If you want to race, meet me at the next MUSR AX. All participants are encouraged to drive at their own comfortable pace. We will be stopping on numerous occasions for "breaks" at the scenic viewpoints and a few "photo ops'. This will allow us to re-group when necessary. Bring your camera!
***********************************************************
OVERVIEW:
This is an informal gathering of Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas 914 drivers and their cars. We will meet in Talihina, OK, at the Kiamichi Inn. This is a classic "car" motel from the sixties. We again have permission to grill hamburgers in the parking lot Saturday night right next to our cars. Miss Kitty (motel owner) likes our group.
From Talihina, we will approach State Highway 1, also known as the Talimena National Scenic Byway, or for short, Talimena Drive. This road runs for sixty miles to the town of Mena, AR. Although other states can boast of a larger quantity of twisties, Talimena holds it's own when it comes to a driving challenge, and has been identified as one of the best sportscar roads in America by Car and Driver Magazine and various other car and bike organizations. It extends west to east on top of the ridgeline of Winding Stair Mountain and Rich Mountain in the Ouachita National Forest north of the Kiamichi Mountains.
These sixty miles of highway are filled with sharp curves and 13% grades of unbroken blacktop. There are lots of both low and high speed turns with many tight switchbacks that are often preceded by steep downhill grades. Your brakes should be in their best condition.
Overall, the road surface itself is in very good shape with only occasional, rough areas. There are many scenic vistas that overlook the valleys for pulling over and regrouping, or taking some pics. All of it comes together so nicely, that even if you're temporarily stuck behind a slow moving RV, it's still a cool drive.
We will tour around Mena, have a lunch break, and when everyone is ready, get back to the driving task at hand, and tour back to Talihina. After a break, we'll get together for our cookout and favorite beverages. Sunday morning we'll have a nice breakfast before heading home.
This is a fair weather get together. Mild chance of rain will not deter us, however eminent threat of severe precipitation will cancel our plans. We will be in touch as the time draws near.
Hope to see you!

Oh yeah...
So who is planning on going?
It's a haul from Houston, but I am willing. Let's see if Anne will come with me and drive her car. I won't hold me breath for the other folks. Maybe Redbeard will blow the dust off of the "Suicide Blonde" and tow dolly?

I'd love to see some V8's rip those hills. Those hills need some rippin'.
And if you show up Andrew, I'll pay for your gas (up the hill).
Hey.. I know the car in most of your pictures!!! I was either driving or riding in it.
Planning on being there. Bringing BOTH cars this year.
We are going to arrive Friday night like last year. Now if I can remember how to get there.....
C'mon everyone.... let's
If I had a driver, I'd do it. I don't want to be the one in a minivan!
Joseph,
Are you going to drive with both hands this year?
I would suggest getting a camera mount for the car before the run.
Maybe I will bring the video camera and mount it in my car.

Oh how I wish I had something running for this drive. Start a list for next year and put my name at the top. My old BMW group made this run a couple of times and it is the cats meow! Have a blast, be safe, and most important... POST SOME DAMN PICS WHEN YOU GET BACK!!!!
It really is beautiful up there around that time of year!!! And the cookout is the most relaxed time I've ever had at a car event anything! You have literally three feet to stumble/be carried from where your empties litter the ground to your motel room.
Of course.... if we're talking V8 and 6's.... my poor little 1.8 will be stylin' in the back of the conga line.
I'll wave as you guys pull away on the uphill slopes... You can then wave back when I catch up through the corners.

oh yea, I am IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am putting the finishing touches on my new carbs and engine bay resto.... Should be ready soon........
Seriously folks, this event rocks.....don' t miss it.
Just made the room reservations.... We will be in the same room as last year.

ugh.....Easter weekend......
I am screwed...
It was pointed out that the weekend of April 15th is also Easter Weekend. So the Talimena 1 "Executive Committee" (Joseph and myself) have chosen to change the dates.
Update your calendars boys and girls.... It is now April 22nd.
Thanks for the heads up JR.
We're changing the date to the following weekend.
Our new date is April 22nd. I have edited the original announcement.
My life would be much simpler if Palm Pilot calendars included holidays...

JR,
We changed it because of you... so don't back out on us.....
If you do, I am going to come over to your house and WELD JACKSTANDS TO THE BOTTOM OF YOUR 914!!!!
oh and I am in
I am fairly confident that my neighbor with 74 will be coming as well. I will confirm.

The really nice folks at the motel there changed my reservations automatically when Joseph called them to change the weekend.
We are all set for April 22nd.
Now this sucks... I just found out that April 23rd is a AX for Maverick region. We may have to go back on Saturday night so we can go to the AX on Sunday.....
I was just dropping by and saw this thread. Read it. Looks like a great trip!!! Hope everyone will make it and have a great time. Make sure you post pictures and let the rest of us know how it went. The road looks great.
Enjoy.

Hello all!
Guess I'd better get cracking and fix one of the teeners. The Six has been down for a battery tray replacement and front sway bar. The 1.8 shucked a CV backing out of the dentist's office a month ago. I've got to extract a broken bolt and repack the CV. I should at least be able to get that done before th 22nd of April. I am going to shoot for getting the Six done to test the sway bar on those twisties.
Okay, now all I've got to do is make reservations.
See everyone there,
George
Clay, don't let 'em get to ya' man; I also drive with the seat at the foward stop. I always keep in mind that at 5'6" I am the tall one in my family, yeah!

Hi guys,
I found some metal in the oil sump screen of the 1.8 last weekend and some as well in the oil filter. So, whether or not I make it on the drive depends if I get the Six back together by then.
I have decided to build up my spare 2.0 for the track car before I tear down the 1.8. I don't need another engine in pieces.
I will try to keep you posted on the progress with the Six.
Later, George
George-

Question.
How long will the drive take from Mena to Talihina (1 way) along the scenic hwy 1?
I'm considering coming up that way on Friday, and going back that way on Sunday. that way I get to drive it 4 times in 2 days.
It took us a couple hours last year. And we were NOT going slow.....

Just a reminder.
TALIMENA I
is now just 3 weeks away
Looks like I'll have fresh rubber for it!
..
If'n you don't mind a Volvo tagging along, We may be there. Just not enough time to finish up the teener.
No problem Jack!
Of course Clay and Curt will make you drive in the back. They're the bad cop, I'm the good cop.
This drive is enjoyable even in a Volvo! (Just kidding - I'm on my 3rd 850 wagon in a row - I love 'em).
But you will have to bring lots of photos of your car for us to look at.
Hope ya'll can attend!
..
Hello all. Curt and the infamous "wooden bumper" will return this year. We have a new front bar, bilstein sports, and new rubber this year.
Jack, bring the volvo!!!
Tommy, it's a 60 mile drive. We made the return trip last year in 65 minutes. Glad there was no local law enforcement on the road!!!
I look forward to seeing everyone from last year, and a few new faces too.
Joseph, thinking about a drive to your town next weekend, since the bumblebee is now at it's new home in K.C., and I have nothing to do on the weekends anymore. Yeah, right!!! Actually I have a new project lined up already. A 74 2L that is in dire need of body, engine and mechanical repair, but all there, and no structural rust.
mrdezyne, I wanna see your suby conversion!
Clay, do I need to bring the golf ball grill?
Later, Curt

Curt,
We may need more than one grill, if everyone who has talked about it shows up. I got a toolbox grill for christmas that I am dying to try out! It's coming with me.
Well guys, I am sorry to say but I have a case of the "Dellorto Drip" that will keep me and my car at home this year. I will hopefully be shipping the affected carb off the ACE this week for repair.
So you guys have fun and BE SAFE. Stay on the pavement
Oh and Clay, technically my car is no longer on jack stands so keep your damn welder away from my car
Have you considered installing a simple rebuild kit for them?
Not having any previous experience, I did my Webers last year and it was pretty easy.
Del's may be different.
Sorry you won't make it. I know you've done a fair amount of work on your car since the last drive.
We'll miss not seeing you this year.

Hello All!
I managed to make some progress last weekend on the Six. If all goes well, I may just make it. I also put in a set of Koni reds in the front and finished the majority of the front swaybar install. I need to put a few weld beads on the sway mounts and then reassemble. Then tomorrow, a coworker will lend me his peg welder to dent pull a little bow in the upper wheel house. I wll then be able to weld the new battery tray in place. Paint and reassemble.
Gee, maybe I should forgo sleeping until I finish...
Well, maybe I'll just stay up a little later working on it.
Until next time...
Regards,
George

Well, I managed to make good progress last night. Sway bar plates welded and primer painted. Another coat tonight, paint tomorrow, then reassemble.
I have the dent pull welder in hand. I hope to have good luck with it tonight.
Discovered that the replacement altenator will not work, Rick at Rennsport is trying to figure that out for me. If all else fails, I will reinstall the old one for now. It just has noisy bearings.
I'd better get cracking, maybe I can get the sway bar primered before dinner.
I'm feeling another late night in the shop/hangar coming on tonight!
Regards to all!
George
Ok.. everyone who is leaving from the DFW area, how about we meet up for a caravan up there on Friday?
I was thinking the parking lot of The Complete Garage on Forest lane (Owned by the Yodster... ).
But if some of you are coming from the Plano/Richardson area, this will be in the complete wrong direction.
Alternative is to meet at H&H so we can harass Wes before we leave.
Let me know.....
Also... Can I get a 914 count ?
There is a slim possibility that I may be part of the non 914 non club -
Heather and I would drive up Friday PM as well ...
In the TERCEL....

Hey all, newbie here in DFW area (Uptown area) my "new to me" 74' 1.8, bone stock Ravenna Green 914 and I are "planning" on joining you guys on this trip. A couple of questions to this crew (bear with me);
In reading through this thread, I understand this will be a "spirited ride"... as you all are aware the 74' 1.8 is the feablest of all our steads. Am I going to get dusted here?
Also, I will be bringing a fair amount of my own tools (including my wife) but my real question is... I am still working out the kinks and breaking her in (the car, not the wife) and I am concerned about making the trip there and back in one piece. She seems pretty road worthy at this early stage, new tires, plugs, coil, wires, fuel lines, air lines, cream coated tank, brake lines, fresh brake oil, engine oil, etc.
With two weeks to go, I will try and take her out for a longer run and see how she performs but do you guys have any concerns in me coming along? The last thing you all need is some dumb ass slowing things up...
Thanks for any feedback/recommendations. I really am looking forward to this trip if I can make it.

Cool!!!
I have been hammering on her a bit today and she has been very resilient thus far... my main concern is the unknown... things like the clutch cable (I will be getting a fresh one in the trunk just in case), Throttle cable... ditto...
The suspension is pretty spongy but not that bad... might get some new struts and springs on her prior to the trip...
Is the Talamena Inn all booked up at this point I wonder? Do you have a headcount?
Can I ask more questions???
I am really looking forward to getting together and getting some great advice while driving some great roads!
Done this ride on my motorcycle so this will be a bit slower...
Thanks again Clay for the encouragement and open invite.

No room at the inn? I dont' know... you would have to call and find out.
I don't have a headcount either, but it looks like a bunch of people are going to be there.
Rich Johnson called me to say he would probably be there....
Clay -
What approximate time is the caravan planing on leaving - I need an answer NOW due to the spouse scheduling some work issues...
Thom
Noon on Friday.
IF we are going to have a bunch of people from the Plano/Richardson/Allen area, then we will meet at Wes' shop.
Noon won't work unless I can get her to reschedule with her client....
Noon was just the first time that popped into my head. If you need it later, that's fine. But we need to leave well before 3 so we miss rush hour.
It's a 5 hour drive up there. If we get up there too early we can eat dinner, but there is NOTHING to do after that. They roll up the sidewalks after dark.
So anytime before 3 is fine with me.
Clay -
Heather is shooting a bridal at 3:30 - so don't hold up the pack for us - I will let you know what we are doing once it gets figured out....
how does OK qualify as "southwest"? west of the Missisippi and south of CAnada?
I hear that, when I read "Southwest" I thought Cool ,San Diego I can make that one. Talimena is only 1450 miles away, no problem. Next year...
Hello again all!
I'm still working every day on the Six. Sway bar is in. Front struts in. Fuel tank back in. Final bondo skim coat on the upper wheel house done. Sand and then primer tomorrow. Saturday, time to get jiggy with the MIG and get the battery tray in. I hope to put the engine back in Sunday or Monday. Been working in the shop 'til 12 am every night, getting up at 5 am is a drag! Come on, Friday! Curt Curtis called yesterday, wanted to help. Sorry to say, that it just takes a lot of man hours to get it done right.
Well, hoping I make it on the drive.
Later, George
Several things:
I talked with Kitty at the Kiamichi Inn and she said she only has one room left in the "wing" of the motel reserved for us. She has plenty of other rooms available, they are just in a different wing a bit further away from our area.
Call 918-567-2243 to reserve a room and remember to tell them you're with the 914 group.
Here is a the list of people that have either been mentioned, or have indicated they would like to attend (+ denotes strongly confirmed):
Joseph Mills (OKC)+
Curt Curtis (Tulsa)+
Clay Perrine (Dallas)+
Betty Perrine(Dallas)+
GS9146Driver - George (Tulsa)+
dlee1967 - David (Houston)
tommy914 - Tommy (Ridgeland, MS)+
thewheel69 (Dallas)+
Craig Mitchell (OKC)
dakotaewing - Thom & Heather (Dallas)
maxwelj - Jack ( Owasso, OK)
Dave Forman (Tulsa)+
Jerry Aigret (Tulsa)+
Joe & Jean Yoder (Dallas)
Gint (Denver)
Redbeard (Houston?)
Richard Fisher (Dallas)+
Travis Howard. 73 2.0+
Robin Howard (Dallas) +
Julie Floyd (Dallas)+
Looks like we will have 12 to 16 teener drivers along with several "support" vehicles.
It would be nice to have a headcount. If it looks like you're attending, please respond here or send me a PM. I am working on a new tour decal for everyone.
I will be arriving Friday afternoon and staying thru Monday morning. Tommy, if you attend I will probably be interested in doing a portion of the drive again on Sunday when you return home to MS.
Another way to look at this event is to also view it as a "Reliability Tour". When finished with this 500 mile or so drive, you will have established a new benchmark in mileage for your teener. Nice!
Five days and counting...
Attached image(s)
Clay - I updated the list with the new additions you posted above.
We're going to need more of these... ...
..
Note to all the attendees....
If you are going to , then I suggest that you consider Oklahoma to be BYOB.
They only sell 3.2 beer there. And this is a small town so anything more "potent" is not available.
Pack your favorite stuff IN THE TRUNK and bring it with you for the evening after the drive.
Clay et al, I can bring a portable grill? Didn't get to my valve adjustment today nor my shock/strut/spring replacement.
She's running pretty good and I think she'll be fine for the trip... minus the spirited driving part.
Oh well, I am really looking forward to this trip and our maiden voyage and some food and imbibing....
Took this picture this afternoon
Clay, put me down as a definate
Clay,
you are so blessed that my 944 is coming this week-end.

you will be following me Clay....
If the files I created for the vinyl guy work okay for him, I will have these stickers for everyone that attends our tour. You can put them on your car or tool box, etc.

Linda and I will be there.
Okay Clay, it's getting to the point I need more details.
What time are we meeting.
Where are we meeting.
What can I bring to help.

If the current weather pattern continues, we are going to have great weather for Talimena!
On Friday looks like we may have some rain in the morning, but not in the afternoon for traveling. We even get the little Sun icon for saturday with a small chance for some showers on sunday.
Most of the guys I know driving from Tulsa plan on arriving saturday morning.
I should arrive in Talihina on friday around 5:00ish.
Just to re-cap for the cook-out on saturday, last year everyone chipped in and we just bought all the grocery supplies we needed for dinner. So all you really need to bring are your favorite beverages.
Don't forget a folding camp chair.
Forgot to mention
as I re-call Curt, Clay & thewheel69 (don't know your name yet), are bringing grills. Three grills should do it.
I will be bringing a folding/roll-up camp table to put food stuff on. However, we could sure use another if anyone has one.
Hey Ho!
thewheel69 is....
John Foster in the Ravenna Green 1.8...
I forgot to mention that I promised the wife a day/night in Hot Springs on Saturday so, as I was unsure of the cook out plans (I thought Friday..) I'm wondering if it make sense to bring my grill if I'm not there on Saturday night???
Sorry guys, its my first time out in a while.
So, just let me know how I can help.
Well, I originally thought I would just head out on the far end of the 1st leg... I didnt know what the whole weekend drill was... but, who knows what will happen with the road worthiness of "Wasabi" (aint that cute... you'll see why I named her that when I show up with my wife)
So... maybe you guys can do some good sweet talking to keep us in the mix... Next time I might have to meet her in Hot Springs!
Joseph -
I will bring the folding table that we used at the MUSR in OK....
It fits just fine in the back of the Toyota, and my better half will be with me as well - See you tomorrow night (late) -
Thom
