what can I use to dissolve the butyl windshield adhesive?

Lacquer thinner will clean it up. Home Depot or Lowes has it cheap.

heat gun
plastic scraper (auto body putty applicator, every 914 owner has one)
clean up with 'goof-off'

Laquer thinner only takes off laquer paint and uncured rattle can enamel.

Laquer thinner will not take off acrylic enamel. Its great for cleaning off tar and bugs though...

It will however remove the wax on your can.
