914World.com _ 914World Garage _ John Unthank hurt

Posted by: shaggy Mar 12 2006, 01:59 PM

My dad, John Unthank (FlatVW) was t-boned in him 914 when some asshole ran a red light.

He is still in the emergency room now, he has 3 broken ribs, one of the bones in his neck is broken in 2 places, he has a broken nose and a large gash in his head. He is talking and is on morphine.

I know nothing of the car at this point. My uncle just called my and told me that he found the yard that it is located in and it will be towed here tomorrow.

For those of you who dont know the car is a 1975 914 with a raby 2270 with weber 44's and 911 suspension all the way around. It was bare metal restored by Patrick Motor Sports. He bough it last August.

I don't know what else to say.

My prayers go out to him!

Is there anything we can do? non-Club members got any ideas?

Oh man... That was Brian Miller's old car with my engine....

I hate to hear he is in the hospital, tell him we are pulling for him

Posted by: Headrage Mar 12 2006, 02:09 PM

ohmy.gif Terrible news.

Tell him he's in our thoughts...

Posted by: shaggy Mar 12 2006, 02:11 PM

At this point theres nothing i can think of.

He was planning on running the Alpine 500 at this point it dosen't look like that's going to happen.

I don't know the condition of the car, but i assume the worst.
Atlease it had late doors on it(I'm assuming that he was hit on the door).

I'll update as i hear things.

Thanks

Prayers are sent.

John drove me to the local VW shop from Joe Sharp's at the last BBQ. I really appreciated the lift and his determination, because the shop had already closed, but JOhn was determined that we'd get that pertronix. We knocked and honked and the guys there let us in. He's a great guy and please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Please keep us posted as to his progress.

When it is bent in an accident what else bends with it?
How much is salvagable(<--spelling?)?

Dose anyone know of a descent tub in the AZ area or near it?

Damn! I am sick. John is such a great guy--I don't want any bad happening to him. Sad to see the car hurt too.

Here is a phot of John from our Toys to Tots run this past December. He is the one in the middle in the plaid shirt.

The car was restored by Jim Patrick, here is a link to his web site gallery featuring the car:

Jim, please call if there is anything Susan and I can do to help. 623-297-4084. Don't worry about the car for now. That will work out in the long run and there will be plenty of help from the best damn non-club in America!

My I suggest, as we have in 'other' instances, that we not go too crazy on the flowers (get a decent arrangement) and put the remainder of the money toward things that won't wilt (like insurance deductables... they never seem to wilt away)?

I would be willing to bet John and family can use the loot...

Anything left over will be used to help get him back on the road. It's too early to know what that will take, so speculation will be useless.

Wasn't too long ago the same thing happened at another forum - for International truckss (yeah, a bit strange - 914 and a old truck). We ended up starting a raffle with donated items to pay medical bills. As I recall the guy's kid was real sick and they didn't have any insurance. Then about 3 days later, his father passed away.

Hope all turns out okay,

St Joes is the best place he could go. Barrow Neurological Institute resides there, and those guys are miracle workers.

Posted by: shaggy Mar 12 2006, 10:16 PM

John actually has has back surgery at Barrow before.

He has fractured 4 bones in his lower back as well as the nose, bone in neck and toe.

He does NOT need surgery!

He's sleeping now but it is ICU.

I heard he was hit by a van after the green light had been on for some time. I don't know the status of the car, I'm guessing it was hit driver door near sail panel, being that his ribs are broken on his back side, not front.

Thanks to everyone. Everyone says what a great plcae this is, but you never really realize it until something happens to you. This is like having a second family that cares about you like your blood. Again thanks to all. All we can really do at this point is wait and hope. Thanks for offering to bring Ted and I food, Greg, but well be fine.

Thanks again to all

This is just awful.

Does e'body remember the recent thread about license plate covers that obscure the red light cameras?

We all need to recall and admit that it was 914 club members looking for a way around the red light camera. I don't care if you never ran a red light in your life, if you were thinking you needed such a plate cover, you need to think hard about your attitude.

Just y'day this freaky woman that teaches PE at our granola chomping private high school was driving in the lane next to me. The light went yellow. She SPED UP and ran the red. (fortunately she didn't hit anyone). I stopped. At THE NEXT LIGHT, I was directly behind her. She sure saved a lot of time running that light, huh?

I hope that Jiohn and family sue this asshole into a dirt hole!

Eric,

I emailed Bryan this morning and told him that when I donated, I really just initially gave for some flowers. However, as the need for additional $$ is realized, I would certainly contribute more. I think that might be the case with a lot of others.

John is a great guy and I know people will step up if and when it is determined what is needed.

Yes, at this point we don't know what the family needs. Flowers are just a token, but that's all that we asked for until more information is known.

Posted by: gregrobbins Mar 13 2006, 04:08 PM

Update: Bryan and I went to the hospital to see John this afternoon. He is still in ICU. His wife and some other family was there. They would have let us visit, but John ask that we come back another time. Talked to his wife. They will NOT need to operate. Sounds like he is in a lot of pain and heavily medicated.

I took a jack stand and a 914 Die Cast car to the florist and asked them to make up something from the non club once he is moved to a room where flowers are allowed. Will post a picture when I get a chance.

Family is trying to get the car released from the impound yard and will be contacting insurance.

All in all a pretty good report. John will be sore for awhile, but no surgery is a good sign.

Talked to his brother who saw the car. It was hit on the passenger side in front of the front wheel. He said it looked like a hard impact.

Thanks for the update, sounds like he is going to need a good bit of rest. Could have been so much worse.

Be safe, everyone.

Thanks to Greg & Shaggy for the updates. It's gonna be a long road, but it sounds like John is making progress. No need for surgery is a good thins! I can hardly wait to see what the florist does with those props!

well...i saw him

hes not as bad as i had thought he would be

that was the first time i have ever been around him and not been able to really come up with words
really strange feeling seeing my father who has always been so strong laying there on the bed covered in wires and shit almost unable to move

a doctor came in and had him do some physical things "squeeze my finger as hard as you can", and he did and i just watched his hand tense up with all of his normal stregnth, that was really reassuring, hes still as strong as i remember him smile.gif

the doc said there is no brain or nerve damage!!!

he has no really major fractures. he just needs to lay still and in place so they will heal naturally. needs to wear a brace for about 3 months.

my feeling is hell be fine in time. after seeing his hand tense up like it always does all of my faith is restored.

saw pics of the car. all i can say is "wow..i didnt know that could happen to a 914". my uncle has the pics on a disk when i get that from him ill post some(rather ill have ted post some, im computer stupid)

thats it for now

Love you, Dad.

thanks to everyone! im not sure where wed be w/o you all

Wow, incredibly scary damage to the 914. Probably good that the hit wasn't to directly to the passenger door or side of the car where all the energy of the impact would have been transferred to the car and driver. Looks like the car may have been spun counterclockwise which would have dissappated some of the energy of the impact. Nasty.

I hope your state doesn't have stupid vehicle laws like NJ does (or did when I lived there in the '80s) where they assign percentage of blame on both drivers. Being hit in the front means that the driver of the innocent car shoulders some of the blame, even though the other guy ran a red light or stop sign. Absolute BS.

Posted by: LvSteveH Mar 14 2006, 09:47 AM

He's a lucky guy smilie_pokal.gif had the impact occurred 3 feet back, at the door, my guess is that it wouldn't be survivable based on the amount of damage seen here. A lot of the energy was dissipated by spinning the car around as opposed to pushing it had the impact been square. The old brain bucket doesn't like to be hit from the side. Hope you make a speedy recovery.

(fortunately she didn't hit anyone).  I stopped.  At THE NEXT LIGHT, I was directly behind her.  She sure saved a lot of time running that light, huh?...

Though I don't like it when people speed up at yellow lights either, the last sentence pisses me off because it's completely invalid and is over-used in other driving situations as well. Neither party knows if that action will get them further ahead in traffic or not; it's dependant on the driver's skill and the luck of traffic surrounding them. Besides, they're in front of you which is one less car in the way of the desination wink.gif

I am so glad that John is okay!!!!!!

Those pictures tell a big part of the story -- and indicate just how hard the hit was and just how thankful we should be that things didn't go just a little differently...as some have already stated.

Still, it's hard to see these pics in a way that it's not when viewing a crashed Honda -- or even an Enzo for that matter. Something about seeing it as not so much a car or an object but as the clear representation of many hours of passion poured into something. It's no manufactured thing -- it's a project that consumed a lot of hours and love.

It was a beautiful 914, and you can see that better in some ways now than when it was straight. But I'm very, very glad it crumpled up -- it did a good job in a nasty hit.

And there are plenty of replacements for even the nicest 914. No replacements for one of us...

UPDATE:

I just got off the phone with the hospital. John is still in ICU and does not have a phone. The nurse said they are waiting for a bed to clear, then he will be moved to a ward. Another good report.

Posted by: MrsUnFun Mar 14 2006, 04:48 PM

Hi to everyone. I'm John's wife and home for a short break from the hospital. Thanks so much for being so sweet and kind and supportive. I know John can't appreciate it yet as he's still pretty out of it (not too out of it to be bummed about the car, though). It's a crying shame. He continues to reside in ICU but is stable and fairly doped up on morphine - but he's been conscious and talking the entire time. He's really banged up (understatement). He's been immobile since the accident Sunday morning - flat on his back and staring at the ceiling. We had him transferred to St. Joe's on Sunday afternoon (accident was 9am) from the hospital he was originally taken to. St. Joe's operates "Barrows Neurological Institute" as they are one of the best in the country for neurological problems and so I'm pleased to be among specialists and know that he's receiving excellent care.

I was thrilled last night that he became extremely crabby and unpleasant, complaining about the machines making too much noise (he's still hooked up to heart/blood pressure monitors, iv's and such) and his new custom back brace that goes from his armpits to his hips (it's a great match for his hard neck brace). I knew that was a good sign - anything better than the silence. But as a result of his complaining he received a sleep aid that he reacted to, so had a bad night itching and not being able to lie still. When I left a little while ago he was exhausted and seemed to be resting well.

Our biggest concern is the C2 bone in the neck that is broken in 2 places. They need to keep him still and from moving his neck so that paralysis does not become an issue. So far so good. He also broke 3 ribs on the right back side and L1,L2,L3 and L4 bones in his back. The L2 fracture is the worst of the back breaks and that is why he is supposed to wear the brace for the next 3 mos. or so (good luck - they don't know John!) any time he is weight bearing (at least not while lying in bed, so that's good although he had a hard time seeing the bright side of it). So far the plan is to let the bones mend themselves. I was pleased that they finally brought him food this morning as it means they have no imminent plans for surgery. I was not very pleased that they ordered a second round of xrays of his neck after reading the first round this morning. I am unsure why they felt this was necessary. The neurosurgeon was optimistic after testing his hands, fingers, wrists, feet and toe strength last night so that seems to be good news as well.

As an aside, he broke his right toe and had a 16 stitch 5 inch gash in the back of his head. Amazingly, he got himself out of the car after the crash. He says he just saw a flash out of the corner of his eye before impact. He said the other driver (no insurance) blew the light, and not just barely. It had apparently been red for awhile.

But as our primary care physician said, at least we're not talking about brain injury - bones will heal. We need a few more prayers for no complications from the C2 break, and then on to healing.

Thanks for being so nice. I know the boys appreciate it as well.
Laurie

Alert, asking questions, and doing pretty well.

Said he's still pretty sore and tired and he slept a lot yesterday. He's in a private room about twice as big as the ICU room, and Mom said that they were getting her a cot so she didn't have to sleep in a chair like before.

We're gonna go see him tomorrow.

Lesson #1 - lighter may be faster but it ain't more crash worthy. It is the severe lateral acceleration and deceleration forces that remain problematic,-- cotton pickin' physics!

I think we are all amazed at the cohesiveness of this little group and I, for one, have never quite fully understood it. I cannot explain it, and in trying to would probably only serve to goof it up somehow. Grown men, "with a few nice wimmins", are not normally this considerate of one another. I feel both humbled and honored by the care and compassion extended by you all.

In the words of Woody Allen, "I would never want to belong to a club (non-club) that would have someone like me as a member." But in this case I will certainly continue to make an exception.

My tolerance for sitting at my computer desk is quite low at this time, but I do have wireless internet already here at the house. I intend to send my broken laptop (unrelated to this event) off to Britt aka Sir-Post-a-lot of Kentuckia aka bd1308 hopefully tomorrow via UPS if Jim can do it after school. Perhaps a temporary administrator's gig will open up ( poke.gif Zois seems to come and go, don't ya know) as once I'm wireless from my rented hospital bed in my bedroom I will be quite available. I seem to be there 23 1/2 hours a day right now.

Lastly, thanks again to one and all for your kindness and courtesies extended to me, Laurie, Jim and Ted. I appreciate it A LOT. smilie_pokal.gif

So, any thoughts on what to do on the car?  Is it saveable?  Any news on the other driver....witnesses?

I have no concise thoughts on the future disposition of the car at this time. I have not seen it except directly after the accident when I got myself out of the car. My gut feeling is that it is fixable. Jim Patrick has offered to assess same for me sometime soon.

As for the other driver, I am unsure of his current status on a number of levels: immigration, current physical condition and whether he's in the pokey or not. I do not believe that the toad ever even touched the brakes. Furthermore, I was on a green light traveling through the intersection I would say one half to three quarters through my green light cycle when the toad "blew the light". If I'm not mistaken, not only did he miss the red light, I believe there was another vehicle waiiting at the red light in his same direction of travel. How did he miss that? Something doesn't add up here.

Or the one in the Kevin Bacon movie "She's Having a Baby" -- anyone remember that scene ?

My reaction when I saw the first pic that Ted posted wasn't rocket pioneer or storm trooper, but rather : "somebody's just gotta Sharpie in a pair of boobs on that thing...."
