My dad, John Unthank (FlatVW) was t-boned in him 914 when some asshole ran a red light.
He is still in the emergency room now, he has 3 broken ribs, one of the bones in his neck is broken in 2 places, he has a broken nose and a large gash in his head. He is talking and is on morphine.
I know nothing of the car at this point. My uncle just called my and told me that he found the yard that it is located in and it will be towed here tomorrow.
For those of you who dont know the car is a 1975 914 with a raby 2270 with weber 44's and 911 suspension all the way around. It was bare metal restored by Patrick Motor Sports. He bough it last August.
I don't know what else to say.
-Jim
My prayers go out to him!
Is there anything we can do? non-Club members got any ideas?
I am sorry to hear this, I will keep him in my prayers.
Oh man... That was Brian Miller's old car with my engine....
I hate to hear he is in the hospital, tell him we are pulling for him
Terrible news.
Tell him he's in our thoughts...
At this point theres nothing i can think of.
He was planning on running the Alpine 500 at this point it dosen't look like that's going to happen.
I don't know the condition of the car, but i assume the worst.
Atlease it had late doors on it(I'm assuming that he was hit on the door).
I'll update as i hear things.
Thanks
-Jim
omg!
if there's anything I can do, lemme know. I really hope John makes a speedy recovery.
That car was pretty fuchin assholes
That sucks. We're all pulling for him here. Please pass on our best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Prayers are sent.
John drove me to the local VW shop from Joe Sharp's at the last BBQ. I really appreciated the lift and his determination, because the shop had already closed, but JOhn was determined that we'd get that pertronix. We knocked and honked and the guys there let us in. He's a great guy and please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
Please keep us posted as to his progress.
- Joe
That sucks. Hope he's gets better quickly and is out of the hospital soon.
Oh my, that is truely frightening to read. We are all hoping and praying for him. Cars, no matter how nice, can easily be replaced.
To the person that ran the red light though....
Tom
screw the car! lets hope john is ok.
we're prayin for ya man!

I'm assuming the tub is bent.
When it is bent in an accident what else bends with it?
How much is salvagable(<--spelling?)?
Dose anyone know of a descent tub in the AZ area or near it?
-Jim
My prayers go out to John.

We should take up a small collection for some flowers from the club.

Damn! I am sick. John is such a great guy--I don't want any bad happening to him. Sad to see the car hurt too.
Here is a phot of John from our Toys to Tots run this past December. He is the one in the middle in the plaid shirt.
The car was restored by Jim Patrick, here is a link to his web site gallery featuring the car:

Jim, please call if there is anything Susan and I can do to help. 623-297-4084. Don't worry about the car for now. That will work out in the long run and there will be plenty of help from the best damn non-club in America!
Get well soon John! Loot sent Bryan.

You're in our prayers.

Wow.... great guy and a great car, I hope you both get better soon!

Very sorry to hear this,, hope he gets well soon.
I'm sorry to hear about your dad, shaggy. I believe I met John at one of Joe's recent BBQs, stand up guy. I hope he makes a fast recovery, and that you can salvage the car. I'll help with the paypal when I get home from work.
My I suggest, as we have in 'other' instances, that we not go too crazy on the flowers (get a decent arrangement) and put the remainder of the money toward things that won't wilt (like insurance deductables... they never seem to wilt away)?
I would be willing to bet John and family can use the loot...
My $9.14...

Please tell him I send my love and hope he gets better soon!
Have had 3 broken ribs before. It's not fun at all!! But broken neck bones! OMG!!
I hope he takes it easy after he gets out of the hospital. Any strain to the neck could cause more damage and possibly permenate injury!

Paypal sent, get well John.
Paypal status so far: $154.55. We'll get a nice basket of some sort. Greg and I have some ideas to keep it 914 related. I'll post details ASAP. We're waiting to hear from shaggy some updates on John's status.
Anything left over will be used to help get him back on the road. It's too early to know what that will take, so speculation will be useless.
Thanks to all that have donated

Crap!! I'm glad to hear that John's injuries do not seem life-threatening! Healing is not going to be quick, but at least it sounds like he'll be ok. It's a shame that it doesn't sound like the car will be salvageable.
We're keeping you in our prayers, John!
Glad to hear neck bone is not broken.
But neck fracture is not good either.
I suggest a basket full of $$. That would bring a smile to my face.
Paypal being sent.
I hope he makes a speedy recovery. As for the car, I can only imagine it must have taken a terrible beating. Let's keep the $$$ coming to help repair/replace it. PAPAL SENT!

That really sucks! I hope John is OK. I know how much he liked to drive that car.
Fund is now at $258.70.
Once again, this is a great group.
Wasn't too long ago the same thing happened at another forum - for International truckss (yeah, a bit strange - 914 and a old truck). We ended up starting a raffle with donated items to pay medical bills. As I recall the guy's kid was real sick and they didn't have any insurance. Then about 3 days later, his father passed away.
Hope all turns out okay,
DT
Sorry to hear this. Best wishes to John and family.
I agree - John is a great guy and a great 914er.
John - From William -Hello. Sorry to hear about your car . I hope that you feel well soon
That awful! Please give John our best. I just met him for the first time last month at Joe's.
I really hope that your das is ok. It sounds like he made it through pretty well considering. My best goes out to you, your family and of course - your dad. Stay strong.

Unbelievable.
Tell your dad we're thinking about him. If you guys need ANYTHING, let me know.

John actually has has back surgery at Barrow before.
He has fractured 4 bones in his lower back as well as the nose, bone in neck and toe.
He does NOT need surgery!
He's sleeping now but it is ICU.
I heard he was hit by a van after the green light had been on for some time. I don't know the status of the car, I'm guessing it was hit driver door near sail panel, being that his ribs are broken on his back side, not front.
Thanks to everyone. Everyone says what a great plcae this is, but you never really realize it until something happens to you. This is like having a second family that cares about you like your blood. Again thanks to all. All we can really do at this point is wait and hope. Thanks for offering to bring Ted and I food, Greg, but well be fine.
Thanks again to all
-Jim
This is a good report. It sure sounds like John is battered and brused, but not needing surgery is a good sign.
I will try to get by the hospital tomorrow if they allow visitors. Might not let visitors in ICU. We'll see.
I'll post as soon as he's moved to a room.
Since I have school tomorrow that might not be until about 3:30, but I'll try.

You locals may be able to go see him in ICU. Depends on their visitation rules.
When I was in ICU, they allowed 1-2 visitors at a time durring certain hours.
Shaggy,
Thank you for your constant updates! I imagine it must be hard, but I/we appriciate it!

Visitation rules in ICU's have really tightened up due to "HIPA" laws.
Just tell the nurse your his brother or son. "Friend" probally won't get you in anymore.
Good luck and tell him we're all thinking about him.

Thank god for small favors - no surgery.
I met John at the FFC - excellent guy with a super car. Fortunately the car can be replaced or repaired. I hope John is back on his feet soon. Paypal sent - get well.

This is just awful.
Does e'body remember the recent thread about license plate covers that obscure the red light cameras?
We all need to recall and admit that it was 914 club members looking for a way around the red light camera. I don't care if you never ran a red light in your life, if you were thinking you needed such a plate cover, you need to think hard about your attitude.
Just y'day this freaky woman that teaches PE at our granola chomping private high school was driving in the lane next to me. The light went yellow. She SPED UP and ran the red. (fortunately she didn't hit anyone). I stopped. At THE NEXT LIGHT, I was directly behind her. She sure saved a lot of time running that light, huh?
I hope that Jiohn and family sue this asshole into a dirt hole!
This is terrible news, I know I have not been around much lately but it sucks to read about things like this. Being self employed I know the hardship something like this can bring. PayPal has been sent with my best wishes for a speedy recovery.
What good is a club with no members?
I am sorry to hear that, that's terrible. Here's to a speedy recovery....
I've been away all weekend. Just read this. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. I've secretly lusted after that car since the first time I saw it.
I met John at the FFC also. Talked with him a few times on his adventrue back AZ. Give him all our best. Thank you for the updates.

So sorry to hear about this, good that no surgery is needed. I broke my neck 20+ years ago, no fun, that halovest sucks, but you can recover from it.
Take Care. Don
Get well soon John! Hope you're back on your feet soon.

As a recent 914 crash victim of someone not paying attention to road conditions, I was lucky not be hurt while my pride and joy was mangled. As a friend told me "at least you where not hurt; the 914, in the end, is just a hunk of metal which can be replaced".

Wow folks: $395.37 (or thereabouts, paypal is confusing me!). Very generous.

Yes, at this point we don't know what the family needs. Flowers are just a token, but that's all that we asked for until more information is known.
Greg and I just got back from a visit, he'll have details ASAP.
just got to meet him at joe's . hope he gets better soon.
Update: Bryan and I went to the hospital to see John this afternoon. He is still in ICU. His wife and some other family was there. They would have let us visit, but John ask that we come back another time. Talked to his wife. They will NOT need to operate. Sounds like he is in a lot of pain and heavily medicated.
I took a jack stand and a 914 Die Cast car to the florist and asked them to make up something from the non club once he is moved to a room where flowers are allowed. Will post a picture when I get a chance.
Family is trying to get the car released from the impound yard and will be contacting insurance.
All in all a pretty good report. John will be sore for awhile, but no surgery is a good sign.
Talked to his brother who saw the car. It was hit on the passenger side in front of the front wheel. He said it looked like a hard impact.

well...i saw him
hes not as bad as i had thought he would be
that was the first time i have ever been around him and not been able to really come up with words
really strange feeling seeing my father who has always been so strong laying there on the bed covered in wires and shit almost unable to move
a doctor came in and had him do some physical things "squeeze my finger as hard as you can", and he did and i just watched his hand tense up with all of his normal stregnth, that was really reassuring, hes still as strong as i remember him
the doc said there is no brain or nerve damage!!!
he has no really major fractures. he just needs to lay still and in place so they will heal naturally. needs to wear a brace for about 3 months.
my feeling is hell be fine in time. after seeing his hand tense up like it always does all of my faith is restored.
saw pics of the car. all i can say is "wow..i didnt know that could happen to a 914". my uncle has the pics on a disk when i get that from him ill post some(rather ill have ted post some, im computer stupid)
thats it for now

wow..count your blessings you survived! Car is a thing and you'll replace it with something better...get healthy soon!
Wow, incredibly scary damage to the 914. Probably good that the hit wasn't to directly to the passenger door or side of the car where all the energy of the impact would have been transferred to the car and driver. Looks like the car may have been spun counterclockwise which would have dissappated some of the energy of the impact. Nasty.
I hope your state doesn't have stupid vehicle laws like NJ does (or did when I lived there in the '80s) where they assign percentage of blame on both drivers. Being hit in the front means that the driver of the innocent car shoulders some of the blame, even though the other guy ran a red light or stop sign. Absolute BS.
Spoke

John - hope you have fast and full recovery.
Thank God thats only metal twisted like that. I hope for a speedy recovery and comfort to all those affected.
He's a lucky guy had the impact occurred 3 feet back, at the door, my guess is that it wouldn't be survivable based on the amount of damage seen here. A lot of the energy was dissipated by spinning the car around as opposed to pushing it had the impact been square. The old brain bucket doesn't like to be hit from the side. Hope you make a speedy recovery.
My best wishes for John and his family! paypal sent.

I am so glad that John is okay!!!!!!
Those pictures tell a big part of the story -- and indicate just how hard the hit was and just how thankful we should be that things didn't go just a little differently...as some have already stated.
Still, it's hard to see these pics in a way that it's not when viewing a crashed Honda -- or even an Enzo for that matter. Something about seeing it as not so much a car or an object but as the clear representation of many hours of passion poured into something. It's no manufactured thing -- it's a project that consumed a lot of hours and love.
It was a beautiful 914, and you can see that better in some ways now than when it was straight. But I'm very, very glad it crumpled up -- it did a good job in a nasty hit.
And there are plenty of replacements for even the nicest 914. No replacements for one of us...
pete
Prayers and well wishes to John and his family. Sad to see a beautiful work of art meet it's end in such a fashion but at least it protected an even more beautiful work of art.
UPDATE:
I just got off the phone with the hospital. John is still in ICU and does not have a phone. The nurse said they are waiting for a bed to clear, then he will be moved to a ward. Another good report.
Hi to everyone. I'm John's wife and home for a short break from the hospital. Thanks so much for being so sweet and kind and supportive. I know John can't appreciate it yet as he's still pretty out of it (not too out of it to be bummed about the car, though). It's a crying shame. He continues to reside in ICU but is stable and fairly doped up on morphine - but he's been conscious and talking the entire time. He's really banged up (understatement). He's been immobile since the accident Sunday morning - flat on his back and staring at the ceiling. We had him transferred to St. Joe's on Sunday afternoon (accident was 9am) from the hospital he was originally taken to. St. Joe's operates "Barrows Neurological Institute" as they are one of the best in the country for neurological problems and so I'm pleased to be among specialists and know that he's receiving excellent care.
I was thrilled last night that he became extremely crabby and unpleasant, complaining about the machines making too much noise (he's still hooked up to heart/blood pressure monitors, iv's and such) and his new custom back brace that goes from his armpits to his hips (it's a great match for his hard neck brace). I knew that was a good sign - anything better than the silence. But as a result of his complaining he received a sleep aid that he reacted to, so had a bad night itching and not being able to lie still. When I left a little while ago he was exhausted and seemed to be resting well.
Our biggest concern is the C2 bone in the neck that is broken in 2 places. They need to keep him still and from moving his neck so that paralysis does not become an issue. So far so good. He also broke 3 ribs on the right back side and L1,L2,L3 and L4 bones in his back. The L2 fracture is the worst of the back breaks and that is why he is supposed to wear the brace for the next 3 mos. or so (good luck - they don't know John!) any time he is weight bearing (at least not while lying in bed, so that's good although he had a hard time seeing the bright side of it). So far the plan is to let the bones mend themselves. I was pleased that they finally brought him food this morning as it means they have no imminent plans for surgery. I was not very pleased that they ordered a second round of xrays of his neck after reading the first round this morning. I am unsure why they felt this was necessary. The neurosurgeon was optimistic after testing his hands, fingers, wrists, feet and toe strength last night so that seems to be good news as well.
As an aside, he broke his right toe and had a 16 stitch 5 inch gash in the back of his head. Amazingly, he got himself out of the car after the crash. He says he just saw a flash out of the corner of his eye before impact. He said the other driver (no insurance) blew the light, and not just barely. It had apparently been red for awhile.
But as our primary care physician said, at least we're not talking about brain injury - bones will heal. We need a few more prayers for no complications from the C2 break, and then on to healing.
Thanks for being so nice. I know the boys appreciate it as well.
Laurie
Crabby is the best news yet, Laurie. So glad you are all OK.
It's good to hear that he has recovered enough to become crabby.
Best wishes.
Eddie
ps: I've added a little bit to the paypal fund in multiples of my luck number ...
Laurie,
So glad to hear that John is improving and that you are opmistic about his recovery. He is going to need a lot of support so let him complain like crazy.
What a shame that the person who hit John does not have insurance and probably has no assets to go after either...
So, maybe we gather up a rust free shell, contact Chip Foose and the Overhaulin' crew and move the TV production set to Patrick Motorsports...Instead of stuffing in a Hemi or monster big block Chevy, it shows up completed with flairs and a....six!
Tell John to hang in there - we are sending positive vibes! Dave H

Laurie,
Thanks for the update!
Good news, yet still wish it could be better.
No Insurance! I'm sorry. That is going to be a long battle.
More prayers and wishes to John and Family!
Laurie,
Thanks for the update. Please send John our best.
More prayers sent.
- Joe

Paypal fund update: $531.39! :trophy: :trophy: :trophy: This includes some eChecks that haven't cleared yet. The hospital won't allow flowers in until John is moved to a regular room. Hopefully this happens soon. |
New total is $708.50. Very generous folks!
Anybody that's at the Festival of Speed at Fontana, or even near it, come find my car and I'll have a card to sign for John!
Dad was moved into an actual room this afternoon.
I think (not sure) he's allowed visitors now. I'm willing to bet flowers would be allowed at this point as well.
But I think he's still got some medicine in him, so he might not be himself.

Holy bejeebus! That's a big numbeR!

This IS the right paypal account?
I just got off the phone with Dad, and he's doing really well. Asked him how the neck brace was, and he said it's sorta driving him crazy. Hehe...
Alert, asking questions, and doing pretty well.
Said he's still pretty sore and tired and he slept a lot yesterday. He's in a private room about twice as big as the ICU room, and Mom said that they were getting her a cot so she didn't have to sleep in a chair like before.
We're gonna go see him tomorrow.
Oh, turns out he might have to get surgery on his toe. Insult to injury? Seems like it.

WOW, I'm glad it wasnt a different impact...looking at the car... wow, it sounds like he's in rough shape but... it could have been much much worse... hope he gets out of the hospital soon and has a speedy recovery.
Nic
Got a call from Laurie today saying John is in a regular room and has gotten up a couple of times. Ted printed out this tread and took it into him to read and she said it lifted his spirits. I am waiting for her to let me know he is open to visitors.
More positive news.
I'm going tomorrow for a visit--I hear the flowers are there, so I'll take my camera and take some pictures!
Hopefully he'll be out of the hospital in around 3 days.
I'll be posting the pictures tomorrow. =D
very cool!
Dad's home from the hospital today.
Here's a picture of the flowers that the non-club sent (click on the picture for a larger version):
This photo hardly does it justice. As the centerpiece is a jackstand. On the left is a 914-6 scale model. Ravenna Green (if I remember correctly) at 1:45 scale. It's a pretty close replica to Dad's.
Here's what the card says:
"John,
Get well soon from your non-family at the non-club.
- 914club"
Beautiful.
- Ted
PS. I'm sure in the next few days he'll get on and post something.
Come on up John, we want to hear from you.
 Joe
The jack stand freated them out at the flower shop. They just don't understand and kinda hid it. Glad he got it and even better news that he is home.

Good to know John is on the mend, with full recovery in the future!
Another 914 saving a life. Like everyone else has said (paraphrased), it's just a car. (how can I say that about a 914?????)
Great news on John.. Home is much better and a hospital bed
New total on the paypal account is $858.98.
I think he needs a 914 tattoo.....
Yes it saved his life, IT WAS NOT JUST A CAR .....

Wish we could do a "Lets go visit John" caravan.
It's past time for a roadtrip.

"tis only a flesh wound".....
Good to see you out and around.
So, any thoughts on what to do on the car? Is it saveable? Any news on the other driver....witnesses?
I feel for you John. I had to wear one of those back braces for a few months. I had a little "work" done at Barrow Neurological myself. I have a Ti plate in my spine courteosy of a Mt Bike accident. Good to see you moving though.
How the hell did you get cut?
Hey Ted,
Thanks for posting the photos. I think they show both what a horrible thing your dad is going through, and what a great spirit he has. Here's one more non-clubber passing on good wishes for a smooth recovery.
Jeff
John, Glad to see that you're up and around, get well soon.
Greetings and salutations to all members of the non-club club,
As you may have seen from the photos, the Mountain Dew Mobile and I took quite a lick, but it remained and continues to remain strong although battered. I am trying to follow suit.
Lesson #1 - lighter may be faster but it ain't more crash worthy. It is the severe lateral acceleration and deceleration forces that remain problematic,-- cotton pickin' physics!
I think we are all amazed at the cohesiveness of this little group and I, for one, have never quite fully understood it. I cannot explain it, and in trying to would probably only serve to goof it up somehow. Grown men, "with a few nice wimmins", are not normally this considerate of one another. I feel both humbled and honored by the care and compassion extended by you all.
In the words of Woody Allen, "I would never want to belong to a club (non-club) that would have someone like me as a member." But in this case I will certainly continue to make an exception.
My tolerance for sitting at my computer desk is quite low at this time, but I do have wireless internet already here at the house. I intend to send my broken laptop (unrelated to this event) off to Britt aka Sir-Post-a-lot of Kentuckia aka bd1308 hopefully tomorrow via UPS if Jim can do it after school. Perhaps a temporary administrator's gig will open up ( Zois seems to come and go, don't ya know) as once I'm wireless from my rented hospital bed in my bedroom I will be quite available. I seem to be there 23 1/2 hours a day right now.
Lastly, thanks again to one and all for your kindness and courtesies extended to me, Laurie, Jim and Ted. I appreciate it A LOT.
John

Hi John
Glad you are home and on the mend!
Take care and get better real soon!
Lisa
John, your family had sense enought not to let me see you in the hospital. When you feel up to it, give me a call. When your are up to getting out of the house, I can pick you up and we can do Philly Cheese Steaks at Uncle Sams.
