914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Any possibility for a real club track day?

Posted by: Andyrew Mar 14 2006, 01:09 AM

Ever since I got off the track at the wcc 05, I've wanted to run at the track again...

I know theres a lot of events around... but, I just LOVED racing other 914's! (cept mark... he was slow, and I didnt wana pass him wink.gif jk mark)

Theres a few tracks local that I would drive to for just the racing event... buttonwillow, thunderhill, laguna, infineon (actually, the last two kinda scare me with the walls..)..

But I think it would be great to get the racers out again and have another go..

I was dreaming about the 06 wcc, and even got wide eyed when I saw the birds eye of the track, but when I was told that all we were going to do was an autox, I got depressed... sad2.gif

I'd love to see an event were we get all the major players out and have a blast! Run like a 10 event weekend..

Autox,
Skidpad,
burnout contest
Drag
track day
show
brake contest
obstical course (I dono...)
ect
ect

Have trophies, for individual categories, top 3, most spins, best line, most improved, ect...

I'd like to personally race, and see the big dogs race each other... (big dogs I mean, JP, Drew, Andrew, Trekkor, Andy, Joe RS, Felix's, Fiids, Aarons, mine, ect.. ect.. I cant name everyone... lol)

I wana see the big 4's against the small turbo 4's, against the stock cars, against the big and small six's, the subi conversions, the v8's, the v6's, the rotary's, heck Even the electrics out there!

I wana know who's got the best, who drives the best, and who smack talks the best!!

If anyone else has the same feelings... Post it here.

I think our cars are ment to be driven.. This would be one darn good test!!

That means were loaded, and intelegent, right?

(thats what my gf says... biggrin.gif )

A sponser/s would be optimum..

My old college sports car club had a Buttonwillow weekend - it was about $125-$150 per person and I think we needed 35 people to break even. It's not that bad to rent a track (forget about Laguna - last time we checked you needed to have a helicopter ambulence to run.) The biggest expense is usually the ambulence followed by the course workers.
It is a blast to have the track to yourselves and set your own rules and run groups.
Both Buttonwillow (clockwise full track) and Thunderhill are proper tracks for a club event - not to many walls.
If you like Willow springs the Alfa club lets anyone run and they are alot of fun.

Are you kidding!? I was the slowest person out there. I've really gotta get to some more AX events this year. Big tracks scare me until I've gotten some more seat time and maybe some instruction.

I followed you for the first session... thinking that with your sticky tires you would out handle me...

i was wrong biggrin.gif

I thought we were in warm up laps... (no one was passing) the session ended and I was like, "wait... what? aww..."

If they don't scare you something is very wrong (real race car drivers are missing the fear gene) - or your really slow.

Front straight of the streets of willow scared the crap out of me!!!

I think I got to 110 one time..

I never took turn one very quick... It was off camber, no time to setup for turn 2... quite scary!!!

Getting a track for the weekend at a time of year that the weather is good takes loooong term planning. There's lots of competition between all the clubs for good dates. Taking a date during the week is cheaper and easier but no one would show up. Sounds like a good idea but the reality is a bitch. Maybe WCC07

Posted by: brant Mar 14 2006, 09:39 AM

I guess I'm timid...
but running a track event without a bit of structure and rules scares me...

I trust myself, but I certainly want to know that I can trust others... Its not something to take lightly.

having said that.
come out to the MAY 20-21st colorado track event.

Its not a teener only event, but if were lucky it will be 40-50% teeners and we should have a teener only run group!

Thunderhill would be the safest place.
Cheap motel right near the track.
Easy access off I-5.

The track fess will be low there also.

Check with http://www.trackmasters-racing.com/index.html for more info.
Safe group. Lots of track time and usually on Friday.

Lots of clubs have open track events that you can enter. But letting it loose on a big track without instruction is scary. Even if you know what you're doing, if they are that lax about licensing, etc. some other putz may get you.

POC short track is a good place to start. Good instructors, nice folks, get licensed.

There is that Lone Pine thing in May. I'm going, but have no idea what to expect. Hopefully a few teeners will show.

That's the one. We used to put on some nice events, then the rotten bitch wife of the university president killed the club because we "wasted energy" - of course they still had tracter pulls on campus.
- BTW about 4 people did the planning for the whole deal.

Posted by: SirAndy Mar 14 2006, 02:18 PM

well, don't forget that Victory Lane Magazine eventually wants to get a 914 only rungroup for the vintage races.

not everyone's cup of tea, but probably your best bet if you ever want to run against 914s only.

if we can get ~20 cars to show up to their events, we could be getting our own rungroup.

that's what the event at laguna was all about last year. getting 914 guys interested in the vintage races ...

Hey Andy,

Are you planning to take the 3.6 to Laguna for the Vintage races this September?

The guy in the 2.8 914 did pretty good in the big bore class.

You'd really give the Mustangs and Corvette alot of grief!

Hey Andyrew... Keep thinking big on this... I would love to see all of it! It will take an event as big as WCC to get all the guys you want together in one place at one time. Maybe WCC 07??? Never too early to start planning if you wanna pull it all off!

I know theres a bunch of other clubs that hold events...

but why cant we?

I would like to see a huge track event at 07 for norcal...

but mostly I would like to see something for 06...

I figure 30 cars would be perfect..

- insurance

otto & drew did a great job of keeping the WCC trackday smooth and safe, but it takes money, time, experience and commitment.

you got any of that, andrew?
biggrin.gif Andy

Posted by: race914 Mar 14 2006, 04:39 PM

I agree with Andy 100%

I organized a DE event for the PCA California Central Coast Region and it was alot of work and we couldn't even fill the event with our club members. We ended up opening it up to other clubs just so we wouldn't lose money.

My recommendation is to get a group of 914s that seriously want to get on the track and attend one of many existing opportunties.

I bet Hank Watts would do a 914 only grid at the BW DE in April if we had 20 or more members signup.... If we get enough interest, I'll ask him.

Also, I'm in for the SCCA Vintage event at Laguna Seca so that's 1 of 20 for a 914 grid this September!!

Doug Gale with Trackmasters might allow a 914 run group if we had enough interest to create a forth group.

I'll mention it to him.

Trackmasters will let you run conversion cars.

Posted by: nine14cats Mar 14 2006, 05:17 PM

Andrew,

Why don't you lead the charge for the West Coast 914 contingent? Pick a few dates out of the upcoming Calendar for Coastal Driving School, Trackmasters or NCRC and take a poll? Chances are you will find several of us already out there. (Greg, Trekkor, Dan T., me).

Greg and SirAndy are right, it is alot of work to put on these things. And very expensive. And safety is a big deal. The last thing we want is someone hurt or wadding up their toy. Learn in one of these structured environments. Once that happens, you'll be surprised how close we get to each other at high speeds. And safely.

We are always taking a risk when out on the track, but the more you run together, the more you know each other's strengths and weaknesses and styles, and can adjust for it.

And as far as your car, any of these organizations will let you run.

Bill P.

Posted by: Andyrew Mar 14 2006, 05:21 PM

Thats good to know Bill!

I'll do some research on the schools already out there and see if theres any interest.

These guys aren't 914 specific, but definitely run-what-you-brung so the V8 914 would be fine. This is where I took the beast out for test runs every month from Oct-Jan when I tore it back down for the chassis work.

http://www.americancarracing.com/events.html
http://www.opentrackracing.com/

They are kinda one in the same as they take turns scheduling every-other-month. It was $145 for the day and included lunch (but typically a Weekday - Wednesday pretty common). Really great way to get some track time!

Jack Olsen on the Bird Board runs in almost every one of these events, so if you go to that board you may have seen him list them in his threads. Last month was cancelled because they didn't have enough pre-registrations. That means typically there is a decent turn-out, but not so many cars you can't have any fun, and it would be nice to see a few more sign-ups. I couldn't go obviously, but will be right back out with them when the car is back together. Fair amount of 911s there.

NOT W2W of course (I think the red group has done it if it was a small amount of guys that all agreed) but fun. However, if big tracks seem scary, may not be the best choice as Turn 8 is easily over 100mph and somewhat rough, and T9 can get exciting if you go in too hot. The front straight I can get even faster with the V8 acceleration and then T1 can be fun.

My understanding (as I don't have a speedo, just tach, but guys I was running with in T8 told me their speeds) is that T8 I was around 120-ish without really hanging the car out, and I would have to guess around 140 down the straights just holding at 5000rpm (meaning had I had a cage I would have probably went for it and tried to get 160-ish). They weren't going as fast to confirm it.

I saw one guy claim he ran T8 at 155 in a built 914, but I personally think that was BS. I think Roger Sheridan's car was somewhere in the mid to upper 130s and can believe that with a well set-up car. With the 9" wide Hoosiers 120-ish was pushing it in my car, so to tack on another 10-15mph isn't going to be easy (why I think 155 is a load of stromberg.gif )

Long winded... but my point is maybe just get a bunch of 914 guys together and go out together on one of their events. No issue with setting stuff up and price is right.

Posted by: Andyrew Mar 14 2006, 08:06 PM

Im still running a 901! so mid 140's is my top....

No fing way i'd take any corner at over 100 without a wing or an underbody!!! That ass gets light....

I'll have this idea in my head, and i'll post some of my idea's later..

Willow Springs, Nice.

I'm in...

Posted by: gregrobbins Mar 14 2006, 10:45 PM

Club Race Arizona will will sell a run group at their events for as few as 10 cars. They will tailer the group to the needs/desires of the participants. Anything from DE1with instructors through DE4. They run their events at Phoenix International Raceway, and the three different tracks at Firebird International Raceway.

914s running as one group could be a problem. You will get every thing from pure stock cars to 3.6L air cooled monstors, to track cars. Vast differences in speeds can prove problematic to drivers without lost of track experience. Still, would prove to be fun.

Posted by: Howard Mar 14 2006, 11:11 PM

FWIW, last year's prices, don't know if they have changed.

Streets of Willow
track 2200
ins 700
corner workers 800
ems 800

So $4500 for a full day.

Money is one thing, but we couldn't have done it at WCC without Drew and the POC gang organizing and teaching. Those guys made the event possible.

Posted by: brant Mar 14 2006, 11:18 PM

I think EMS at 800 is dirt cheap..
I think EMS out here is 1500/day

its not the expenses so much as the liability.

5K is one thing...
but having the proper waivers in place and making sure no one gets sued after their 100K "accident" is a whole nother game.

the reason the colorado track event is taggin onto a PCA DE in May!

brant (who can't afford the divorce that would follow a law suit from Car stuff)
