I posted a few weeks back that I was going to be getting a 914 from my wifes aunt. Well I towed it to Pittsburgh from DC 2 sundays ago and I'm finially getting pictures up. I'll be keeping this up to date with pics of the progress on the car. I'll be open to any suggestions you have. Now on to the pics.
Is that a 914 under all that junk?
Attached image(s)
By the way that's my dad in that pic.
It was really burried.
Attached image(s)
Hey it is a 914!!!
Just had to uncover it.
Attached image(s)
That is the only rust on the outside of the car.
Here is the only body damage.
Attached image(s)
There she is!!!
Attached image(s)
Moving for the first time in 9 years.
But not under her own power yet.
Attached image(s)
Loaded and ready to go home.

Arriving in Pittsburgh.

Her new home.

All tucked away for te night.
Isn't she pretty!!
That is my recovery crew, dad and my sister.

Nice to see another one getting saved from the woodpile!
Congrats! Which engine do you have in there? Is that a MN plate on the front and MD on the back? Enjoy. If you need help there is a lot of knowledge in this non-club.
Mike
Congrats. Looks like you have your work cut out for you. How much resto are you planning on doing, or is it just going to be loved as it is?
Zach
Good luck on your new car and welcome to the club. If you can't find 914 advice/help/parts/etc here, it most likely can't be found anywhere.
Whereabouts do you live in the 'burgh? I'm originally from the Sewickley area.
BTW, GO STEELERS! Finally one for the thumb!
Spoke
It's to be restored, maybe not quite a concourse, but at least showable, drivable, and raceable.
It was bought at auction 9 years ago and transported to MD. Before that it was driven in MN. The MD plate was put on it by someone at my wife' aunt's house. Never been titled since it was bought at auction. I'll title it as soon as I'm sure it goes back together.
Spook - I'm from Cranberry origionally, and now me and the car (the wife too) live in New Ken. You still in Pittsburgh? I saw you just got a new green one.
I started to take her apart and thought I'd share what I found.

Up front things look really good.
Attached image(s)
The back is anoter story.
Attached image(s)
Shouldn't there be some FI stuff here??
Oh well, carbs are easier anyway.
Attached image(s)
uh oh .. is that a hole in your hell hole I see....
Hey where did all the stuff that should be here go?
Oh ya it fell out all over the floor.
Attached image(s)
Guess how the battery was held in.
Attached image(s)
And the inside.
Got alot of work to do.
Motor and Trans come out next.
Attached image(s)
How do you add oil??? Is that a bus engine in it or just the custom oil breather?
Lots of rust.
its time to learn how to weld!
Made some more progress today.
Look whats missing now.
Attached image(s)
This doesn't look good!!
Attached image(s)
This side is much better.
Attached image(s)
So thats where it's hiding!!!
Guess it will be sitting there for a while until I get the tub all straightened out.
Now I guess it's time to strip out everything else.
Attached image(s)
Look out for squirrels in that thing!
Congrats on saving another neglected teener. Mine looked much like that when I first got it. It's a lot of work to bring them back, but you'll learn lots and have fun doing it. Now get that baby on some jack stands where it belongs!
LOL the back is on stands now.
But I'm leaving the wheels on it incase I have to move it around.
Guess I could build a cheap wooden roling stand, but I'm going to make a roticery if someone on here doesn't offer to loan me one (Any takers?).
That way I can tun it over and deal with the little whole under the battery. I say little cause it's not quite big enough to put my head in and see what is going on.

Wow! You have lots of work ahead of you. All those years of sitting outdoors weren't kind to your 914, but it IS salvageable. I look at it & feel like a mosquito in a nudist camp - where to start first!
Looks like you have SSI's on that engine, that would be a nice score for you. Cool car, looks like a factory silver car? Are you going to stick with the factory color?
All that looks easy to fix, just get a new bungie cord to hold the battery in and drive it!
Can you elaborate on "SSI's" Not sure what you mean. I'm a VW and Porsche newbe. Talk Chevy and Camaro and I'm all over that. HEHEHE
In the peeling paint in the trunk there is a light silver at the bottom then a blue green color and then a darker silver on the outside.
Not sure what one is origional and what is the primar. I plan on a silver color maybe a factory 914 or other porsche color or maybe something else entirely. Will know that till all the other work is done.
The body is almost perfect. The only rust on the whole thing is a little in the trunk and the hell hole. I'm going to weld up the HH my self so hopefully it willn't take too long or be too expensive. The car was free and my budget is $2000 including tools (I have a lot but have to buy the welder so we will see how it goes). Any part donations from your old projects are welcome. If I end up not using something I'll pass it on to another or send it back.
In that vain, anyone have a roticery they want to loan. Promise to return it.
you need to pull the rocker covers and examine for rust on the longitudinals too..
whew... making me tired just watching.
but your doing REALLY fast work.
keep it up.
good job.
brant
Good to see another 914er in Pittsburgh.
BRANT - I have to work fast. I plan to drive this thing to a wedding at the end of July. A friend is getting married in Maine and I'm in Pittsburgh.
Now on to the pics.
Attached image(s)
It's all stripped up to the firewall.
Attached image(s)
Door are off now too.
Attached image(s)
The rust here isn't really too bad. Mostly just surface due to standing water in the trunk mat.
Attached image(s)
Look ma no hands, ERR ah doors. LOL
As long asa I get back from business in Dallas I plan to have it totally stripped by the end of the weekend.
boboli914 - Where are you at?
I could use a chance to look at another 914 that is in better shape than my own, just to let me know there is light at the end of this long dark tunnel. And anytime you want to get your hands dirty please let me know. :-)
Attached image(s)
Looks great! You need to take the long covers off and take a peek. The rest of the rust is just a meer flesh wound!!

you are moving fast...keep that mojo workin'!
Where did you send the hulk? I know wagners has a foreign car yard up on 19 north of Cranberry. I'll be up in Cranberry this weekend and making a stop in Franklin Park. You care to show off your car sometime Saturday afternoon?
Thats a nice start, read all the pages of Mikelo's restoration . I think is title Going into Hell or something. Its 15 pages of rust repairs step by step so you can see how to fix this. Get the door brace on and pull those rocker covers off so you can see the rust there.
Hey, where did my car go.
Oh ya, it's not on its jackstands now!!!!
HOOOWWW!!!
Attached image(s)
There it is!!!
Not done but It did get it off the jack stands in under a month.
I had to clean up everything that fell out of it.
Attached image(s)
This is what all of the removable parts look like.
But I think some of you have seen this before.

I cleaned the car too!!

Keep that MoJo werkin"!
Last one for today.
Time to get a welder and get the holes patched.
Lowes has a Lincoln ProMig 140 that comes with a free auto helmet.
I'll be going to Hershey I think. No car of course, but I'll have the truck to cart home parts.
I can even bring stuff as far a Pittsburgh if you need me to.
Anyways, see you guys there.
Attached image(s)
You sure did strip that one. Its starting to look like a project car! Keep up the hard work
One more thing..You really need to pull those rocker covers off and get behind there and see whats going on. Thats very very important.
Rocker covers are next.
I know it bad. I just havn't been able to get them off.
The screws from the bottom are rusted in place.
Aero Kroil (kano labs). repeat, repeat.
k
It's time I go to war.
I go for all you teener lovers out there.
I fight the good fight against our common enemy.
Here are the tools of war.
Our enemy.
Begining of the first battle.
Casualties of the battle.
Looks like we may win this one.
Time to call in the reinforcements.
Once this guy showed up it was all but over.
I'll post the results as soon as the fight is over.
That's a great start. Keep going...
A wedding in July. That is a short time frame.
Looks like you are making some good progress.
I think you are in the running for the fastest resto.
Question is What do the longs look like?
Rmital just did his. Maybe he will jump in here with some advise.
He is your competitor... claims his will be on the road in another 2 weeks.
That would be less than 2 months on jackstands.
Hey mine spent less than 5 days on the stands.
Its sitting firmly on it's wheels and gets rolled out of the garage so I can clean up.
I know, I know, everyone wants to see the longs without the rockers. I'll do that tonight, but I don't think there is much to take pictures of. They are missing. Look earlier in this thread to see the pile of rust that has come out of the passanger one. I can reach up threw the hole in the bottom and find the heater tube, and the backing for the passanger seatbelt nut. (That broke loose by the way and so the seatbelt is still in the car).
On the block for tonight while the wife is out is rewiring the garage so I can run the welder (PO of the house was a real shoemaker, 2 20 amp circuits, 1 with a switch running 6 outlets, and the second a switch going to an outside flood light.). Welding in that patch, and removing the rocker panels. Then pictures. If I get all that done I'll start on the other rust holes in the cabbin. Then it on to longs and "HH".
With all that I'll be ready to start reasembly. Anyone out there got a windshield (mine is out but has a small crack and I'd rather not put it back that way), and I also need a decient dash to put in first, or a cover if I can't find one.
Impressive work - reminds me of the few times my old man and me have pulled up carpet or pulled off rocker panels and simultaneously said "Oh Shit".
Anyway, there's a guy just outside of Pittsburgh that has a shop w/about a half a dozen 914's which he's parted(ing) out. Can't recall his name - might be able to dig it up for you... I got a pair of windshields and some other odds & ends from him a couple yrs ago...
Keep up the good work.
-Pete
Find me that name and number man!!!!
Then first patch is in.
I think I'm starting to get the hang of the welder.
Even managed to patch a few burn threws.
And I found a couple of thi spots that needed an aditional patch.
Another
Now to move on to bigger and rustier holes.
A good view of what is to come.
Just havn't figured out what is holding this side of te car up.
Must be the outer fender.
Looks like I got a lot of work ahead of me.
Man that is alot of rust. I wish you the best, I would have started with a new shell, but I am from Calif, the joke is we dont weld out here. But that is a BIG WHOLE in the long area, I have concerns because you had mentioned AX the car a little. Alot of reinforcing is going to be needed. Good luck.
I've been a bit slow to post up pictures. So it's time to catch you all up on the progress.
First the hole to be patched.
Heavy patch for the top of the long.
First panel.
It was too wide and tall for me to do it all in one piece with the metal I got from the back of my dads garage.
Attached image(s)
The rest of the pieces.
I'm getting better with the welder. Still not as good as many of you, but remember I didn't even have a welder before I got the car, and I'm doing it all with flux core as I don't want to spend any more of the repair money for a bottle.
The welds arn't as pretty as they could be but they have penetration and will hold even if you .
Now a little rust proofing.
The other patch, and the firewall is complete.
Now for an even bigger hole. Just wait till we get to the longs .
Doesn't it look yummy!!!
All it needs is a little and and .
And of course I'll need a little .
Anyone think I'm yet?
I don't. I think you're just the person this car wanted to come and bring it back from the brink.
Karma, as Earl would say.
More power to you! You go, dude!
-Todd
Thanks guys.
I guess I willn't make that Wedding in July I wanted to go to but maybe I can drive it this year.
Time to show off the weekend progress.
First a suport bar to help make sure the door fits when I'm all done.
The rust is gone.
Atleast the bit in the passanger compartment.
Here's the first patch for that big hole.
Guess I shouldn't have removed the tar!!
Look what I found under it on the tunnel.
Isn't that pretty.
Both holes patch.
Look Ma no hands .... Er Holes.
The Long is patched with 16 gauge. I really needed Engmans laser for that part. Cutting 16 with a pair of shears is like .
But I got it done and it is solid.
You could even in it.
Ran out of time to get it all ground down and coated in rust proof paint. But I should be able to do that tomorrow or the next day.
Then it's on to the driver side for a could of small holes (unless I find more under the tar).
And then the moment you have all been waiting for, I will unveil the long rust.
wow! that is super progress! you should be finished in no time!
I just hope that if I ever sell the thing the next owner doesn't try to replace the pan. Cause they will be in for a lot of and since I welded the patches to both the longs/firewall and the pan.
nice work. I think a potential next owner would be happy that you attacked the rust the right way, instead of a hack job.
Hey man, what else is needed that will take time besides the welding? If you need some engine/tranny help I can come up towards the end of the month (provided my car is running) and do that for you while you weld. Electrical, too.
What you are doing is soo right. I feel at peace when I see rust being replaced with new metal
Let me know (PM as my email function does not work)
Looks good. I would have repaired the "hell hole" before fixing the firewalls though.
Now that the site is back up (Thanks Andy!!!, You do great work), it is time for a much needed update.
I made up and welded in the seat rail using the guide over at the bird site.
Worked pretty good.
Next it was clean up and paint/rustproof of the passanger side.
And the front.
Next was the driver side.

LOL Sorry guys but the new kitten really wants to eat the dancing banana so this is for her.
Another seat bracket.
That side all cleaned up.
All painted up.
And the rest.
And now the moment you have all been waiting for.
Off comes the rocker.
And now the true horror begins.
So I just pulled the jack post off.
I think most of you would have had a party by now and endded this things life.
But I'm going to make her whole again. I have the power and the technology to build her bigger, better, and stronger than before.
So now up onto jackstands for what will probably be an extended stay.
First the tire need to be out of the way.
Had to use a little heat and a hammer to get the lugs loose.
I was reading someones post on the bird board about getting the rear mounts loose and it was recomended to spray with PB Blaster for a week before trying to get them off. I didn't do that. Instead I used enough MAPP Gas to get thyem red hot and then them a bit. After that they came out like there were threaded into butter.
There it is hanging from the shock.
Looks like I'll need a new one of these.
So I'll be working on this next week and Memorial day weekend.
I'll be having a little get together on the 27th for anyone who wants to come. PM for the addy and phone number. If you have parts that might go in my rusty spots I'll buy em.
So come and , , , and we can get to know each other and do a bit of , , and .
And bring your cars too as the only one I have ever seen running was at Hershey and it was to wet to really get a good look.
Just a bump so people will see about the BBQ. I'm in Pittsburgh PA. So come one come all and have some fun.
That figures. We will be in NY for the week. Have for me. Car is looking great!
Since you are local just let me know and you can come and visit any time.
Where and when in NY. I'm headed toward Rochester. Got to be at a customer Tuesday the 30th.
I won't be able to make the 27th but have a cold one for me. I'll be in the 'burgh 2 weekends later for a June 10 graduation party.
Damn your making fast progress. Please tell me that you got that car a year ago and have been working on it since and just got a chance to upload the pics lately.
Like the old-timers used to say in the steel mill, "Slow down there young buck, you're making the rest of us look bad". Just kidding, keep up the good work and keep the pics coming.
Spoke
I followed me home March 5th this year so that is 75 days in my posession. Still have to do the title transfere. I sat for 10 years with no official owner so I don't think a little more will hurt. It has only been in it's native environment (jack stands) for 5 days while the motor came out, and then went back up on Sunday, so that is 10 days so far. But it will have to stay up on them till the hh rust is fixed as I removed the rear trailing arm.
Spoke - The goal is to drive to Maine end of July. At this point I probably willn't make it but it is the goal.
So let me know if anyone can help.
And thanks for everything you guys have done so far.
You should post a seperate thread on the get together on the 27th.
Also just because I am a pessamist, I woudl title it before I finish it as you never know if someone will change their mind once they see that you actually are fixing it.
Dr E - I have the bill of sale to my wifes uncle. His wife gave me the car after he passed away. Willn't be a problem to title it. I did make another post about a BBQ on the 27th but I failed to put a location inthe title so it has already fallen off the front page for lack of intrest so I'll make a new one that actually tells where and when.
drewvw - I'm in Pittsburgh PA but I went to school at RIT and I'm headed there after the get together at my place for work. A customer up there needs help. I get to go and get his CNC machine up and running.
nice dude...I am a U of R alumni. You ever live in the GLC area that the universities sort of share now, I spent sophmore year there. Good times....
OMG Man...
I just saw this thread... I thought I was freaking insane.
WTG Man... seems to me as you are doing it well, just remeber to keep doing it right and you should be fine.
Oh ya, I forgot you got this from family. They are a little more trustworthy
Update time!!!
So this was what was under the rocker cover.
Had to get rid of some of that rust.
Are you suposed to be able to see the inside of the long?
More ugly and the obligatory jack stand shot.
It is of course sitting on a ramp as it wasn't nearly tall enough.
Time to start reinforcing things before it decieded to fold.
Another plate and the heater tube is out of there.
Got to go to a mufler place and get one, maybe tomorrow.
Top down, This is what I have to patch.
Off with the dog ear!!!
A little clean up with the grinder.
The next victim of the cut off wheel.
After a bit of grinding.
Hey where did everything go??
Oh there it is.
Tomorrow I
Incase anyone has missed the new thread, the Pittsburgh BBQ is now scheduled for the 24th or June. It's not moving again. So come and visit, help with old rust here, and generally have a good time.
PM me for directions.
Hello fellow East-Coaster!
I'm at the same stage as you with the hell hole/longitudinal, although mine won't take QUITE as oversize cahuna's as yours will! Congratulations on the great work, keep chugging along!

All I can say is...
All bow down to the mighty fitsbain
You are going to town on a mighty undertaking, keep up the good work!
Did some welding and grinding over the weekend.
So much infact that my arms are welder burned (sunburn from the wel spark) and covered in what looks like a rash from the grinder sparks hitting me.
Starting to look better.
No more hole all the way to the floor, and I'm not as concerned about it colapsing any more.
Hey what is this??
And where did these come from?
Oh I remember now!!!
My little sister showed up over the weekend and started to tear the motor apart.
She's better with a screw driver than most guys twice her age and she can't even yet.
She was the one that went with me and dad to go and get the car.
Now the bad news, It looks like the motor is froze. I'll know better as I get it farther apart, but I think a rebuild or replace is in order.
Maybe new pistons and jugs, and a little bump in compression while I'm in there. A good cam from Jake and a bit of carb tuning and I might just have a decient little runner.
Any way on with the pics.
And now a friendly reminder:
Pittsburgh BBQ is in 1 month. 6/24
Open to all comers, even you left coast guys
So just hop in the car and head on out here. PM me for directions.
So heres the serial number, what do I have?
This is why I'm tearin it apart.
There was water in the oil when I drained it, and rust in the cylinders.
There she is ready to be disasembled.
Looks like the car wasn't home to just the mice. Here are the mud wasps!!
Hey look, parts!!
To bad they are the junk kind, now I got to buy expensive stuff.
Can this be reused?
UGH!!!!
A greasy mess!!
You should have seen what I looked like.
So take a tub, very hot water, and some super clean (from Walmart).
Insert engine halfs, and wait.
Doesn't this look better!!
Time to order all of the expensive parts.
Right on man. Your sister must rock! Ya think it will be back together before the 24th? You should take the engine cases, crank, and rods to a VW shop to have them checked. They could just use a cleaning and resizing ato be good to go.
Its a 1.8 if you are still wondering. Nice work on everything BTW, I'm impressed.
So does anyone out there have a good 1.8 head?
The passanger side one is pretty messed up. I willn't be able to use it unless I pay to get it rebuilt.
Heck no Jim is not using it, unless it was a suby. I think that he sold it already, though. If not, I can maybe help ferry it out to you.
If he has it I would get it. I wish I would not have sold it!
What is his user name?
Very nice!
Here is mine the day I bought it...

And today after about 3 years and $30k
...And still not done!

WRX914 - nice car!!!
Well A little update:
I haven't got much welding done as of late. Things at home ave been a bit busy.
I have been working on the motor and decieded that it is toast. All cleaned up but still dead. So it is on it;s way out to another member that needs parts.
I have a fresh 3K mile 2.0 allready all done coming from GA.
And I just bought my second 914. It was from an evilbay auction that someone posted about. Don't think it is a club member selling it. I'll try and convert him when I pick it up on Sunday.
Looks like it has all the stuff I neeed to fix the HH, and seats and a good dash. Even has a good bat tray. Mine might have to become the parts doner (after all that work ).
So we will have lots of stuff to do at the BBQ.
Also comes with a set of 2.0 SSI's.
Grand total - $264 plus gas to Rochester NY and a traler from UHAUL to get it home. And food for dad since he is helping (again).
Guess I really am sick - and it all your fault, All of you out there that got me into this.
