914World.com _ 914World Garage _ $/horsepower

Posted by: lapuwali Mar 15 2006, 01:40 PM

Someone on the MSEFI board has $30/hp in their signature.

My 914 (a 1.7) cost me $3000 for it's 80hp, or $37.50/hp. My FIAT also cost me $3000, but it makes 96hp ($31.25). I sold my 912 for $6000, so the new owner paid $67 for each of its 90hp.

My wife paid $119/hp for her Subaru. Never mind it will do 14sec 1/4 mile times...

I think my record would be my '87 RX-7 Turbo, $3000 for 190hp, a bargain at only $15.79/hp. My record the other way would be my '99 Miata, at $171.

'70 914 $1000 for 1.7, for $12.5 per horsepower
'70 914 with Subaru conversion probably end up totalling $2500, so $14.7/HP
'01 TT Quattro (wife's car) $86.7 /HP

Purchase price alone...
~$24/hp. biggrin.gif
Factoring in all parts/costs since purchase... I'd rather not figure that out. blink.gif huh.gif ohmy.gif

Posted by: Headrage Mar 15 2006, 01:50 PM

Right now I'm at $69.52 per horse. sad.gif

Posted by: fiid Mar 15 2006, 01:51 PM

I reckon I'm about 10k into my 914, and probably about 180HP currently - so that would be... $55/hp.

If one discounts all the suspension and mods to the 1.7l engine I have before though - I'm about $4k in - with the tub and the subaru engine - which yields a much healthier $22/hp.

Posted by: skline Mar 15 2006, 02:01 PM

That would put me around $25/HP

What are you in for just the Soob swap? Figure the difference between whatever you're running now and 80hp, and you'll have an even healthier figure.

About $15 per hp, unless you count the tires and the wheels, then it jumps up to $25 per. After I paint it and replace the body seals...don't want to talk about it

Posted by: Brian Mifsud Mar 15 2006, 02:26 PM

I'm a miles per dollar man myself...

'76 914 2.0 20,000miles/$3000 = 6.7 miles/dollar
'79 MB 240D Diesel 120,000miles/($4000 + $2500 engine rebuild) 18.5 miles/dollar
- (wife crashed just when engine was broken in ...sniff.....)
'96 Ford Mustang GT 170,000/$25K = 6.8 miles/dollar

and my ALL TIME FAVORITE!!!!

'85 Nissan Pickup 100,000miles/($2700 purchase price - $2000 sale price = $700) = 143 miles/dollar

Posted by: Mueller Mar 15 2006, 02:41 PM

$8.75 per hp (914, 80hp, got $700 into it before spending non-essential money on it)

then I have $92, $108, $114, and $119 (Hyundia,Volvo turbo, 911 and Ford F150) .....

Posted by: brant Mar 15 2006, 02:46 PM

crap...
$205.88

I fiqure about $25per to make 400hp.

Posted by: tat2dphreak Mar 15 2006, 02:59 PM

the 914 isn't a good # for me... probably $60 /hp ;D

my escort I had in college ruled for it, I traded a POS truck and got the car and $500 for about 120hp... -4.1666666666 ???

Posted by: DNHunt Mar 15 2006, 03:05 PM

I can't answer that for the 914 except to say more than is sensible to most people. The reason I can't do better than that is I don't keep track because I don't want to know. With that said it is the car I value the most even though it is the car I drive the least. Again most people wouldn't understand. People here probably get it though. It's tough to put a value on it; it is certainly more than money. I'm looking forward to that first really warm day in spring and driving with the top off.

$105.27 for 475 if you factor in the total build costs and motor replacements parts broken along the way etc.

$21.06 if you are talking powerplant only.

1980 Chevy Elcamino.
396 BBC, Dynoed at 420HP

Paid exactly $3900 for the car.

$9.28 per HP

Of course... it had no paint, radio, or much of an interior when I bought it...... but that all came afterward, and it didn't affect the HP biggrin.gif

$/horsepower, How do your cars rate?

mhmmm, lets see ...

with the current 1.7L:

~15k for ~70 HP = $214.29 / HP

with the 3.6L installed:

~25k for ~300 HP = $83.33 / HP

well, what do you know, the 3.6L is much cheaper than the 1.7L !

With the right math, almost anything can be justified... biggrin.gif

is this just the engine or the whole car cost???

engine $1200
HP 350+
= <$3.42 dollars per HP.

Car+engine $5000
= $14.28 dollars per HP.

355cid Chevrolet engine w/mods.
head porting and milled
cam
intake and exhaust
.030 over

engine built by me. machining was outsourced.

I bought an Olds F85 Station Wagon with a V8 that made 185 HP for $200. $1.08/ HP

Posted by: WRX914 Mar 15 2006, 04:06 PM

Total build ~ $92.85 per hp

engine only ~ $8.51 per hp

$300 for V8 Cutlass Oldsmobile with only 30,000 miles... my first car... ran it to 160,000 and gave it away to a friend... Only put on brakes, tires, water pump, hoses, filters, belts and alternator over that life time.... best $ per mile car I ever owned.

$500 for my first 914... put a battery in it and drove it in to the mountains and back as a first test run. Since done quite a few $$ upgrades

$100 for 1.8 engine out of local junkyard that ran and runs perfect.

Picked up freebie 1.7L engine from Zois for a buddy...

How do you divide by zero for that last one.. I guess there was the cost of the gas for the 50 mile trip to Santa Barbara and back

4 wheel drifting around turn 2 at Willow Springs... Priceless

Hey Mark,

Since you're only in your car for $300, I'll give you $3300 for it, that's a whopping 1000% profit. biggrin.gif

As for my 914, probably around $100/hp, very little of that related to generating horsepower.

My worst case so far, my 1990 Farrier F-27 trimaran with an 8hp outboard for more than $5000/hp, though the engine is in use less than 10% of the time.

Interesting concept....

1998 VW GTI VR6
paid (2001) $9500 @ 172hp = $55.23
now (value +upgrades) ~$9k @ ~190hp = $47.37
