914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Results of my car's diet. I could use

Posted by: john rogers Mar 20 2006, 10:43 AM

Over the past couple of months I pulled the headlight assemblies, replaced the doors, front and rear lids with GT Racing's fiberglass parts. On Saturday I did a corner balance and the final weight with me in the car, all driving gear, full tank of gas and my cool shirt cooler full was 2230 pounds. Before the reduction it was 2513 with the same setup. Not bad since the car was originally all steel with late model doors and a six.

That's pretty good considering full tank and driver with a six!
Don't know how big a boy you are but a tank of gas is pretty heavy.

Just trying to compare apples to oranges for my 4 banger. Which is getting ready for a serious diet too. My goal is 1640 lbs no driver 1/4 tank of gas.

Cool....
sounds close to 2000.

without getting personal (I promise to not do any math)
what is the car weight without driver then?

Okay, okay, I weight 220# without the suit, Hans device or helmet so figure about 10# for that as the suit is a 3 layer.

Posted by: lapuwali Mar 20 2006, 01:03 PM

So, 220 for you. Figure 20lbs for gear. 100lbs for a full tank of gas, and you're under 1900lbs. Very good for a car with a Six in it. Which Six?

I'm hoping to get my mostly street early /4 under 1900lbs with a full tank, and it sounds like I'll be able to get there easily.

The car has a 2.0L six and has a 6 point Autopower bolt in cage which is not the lightest one around but they work well as my buddy Ted found out. The interior still has carpet but no passenger seat as that is where the cool shirt cooler goes. The fuel tank is a 12 gal steel can type mounted in front of the bulkhead whaich has been cut. The car was balanced with the street steel wheels which weigh about 12 to 15# more than my 4 bolt Centerlines I think I'll have to weigh them to see exactly.

John,

I can't remember.
which material of engine block is in your car?

mag or early alloy.

I found out that the early sandcast alloy blocks are 31lbs heavier than the mag-6 blocks.

Hi John,

Just wondering if you kept a log of the weight of the individual items and their 'replacements' if any?

Curious on the savings for the headlight assemblies, doors, etc. (I haven't done those yet)

My 73 is 1965# with a full tank.

F/G hood, bumpers, no exchangers, heater fans, spare or tools, but still street legal, has wipers and lights. Could lose another 20# in the interior, and a bit more with early doors, but that's about it.

John, I have enjoyed watching the evolution of your car. nice job.
I too have been thinking weight reduction but I must keep it to under 50 lbs loss(PCASDR rule CS)
Does anyone have bumper weights?

Same here. I've been wondering about the headlights and motors lately and if I should remove them. John, do you have fog lights. I know there have been a few times we came in off the track at the end of a winter event in the dark and that makes me think I want some kind of lights.

I weighed both front and rear bumpers at about 17.5 lbs each (with rubber tops) from my '72. I also have the front deck lid weighing in at about 30.5 lbs. How much do the fiberglass decks weigh and who's the manufacturer?

Joe, What are your plans to reach 1640 lbs.?

Thanks, Bill

Thats seems like a Very ambitious goal
I don't think I could reach that weight with a -4 and fiberglass panels...

(unless I cut out all of the sheetmetal on the floor and trunks)

Joe, how much sheetmetal and glass are you going to shed? Any side windows? Windshield? Full tube frame?

The composite lids weigh between 10-15lbs, depending on CF or FG, and "street-weight" v. "race-weight". There are also FG bumpers available that are under 7lbs each, or half the previously quoted number. On a '70-'72, you'll lose about 45lbs by switching to all FG parts for lids and bumpers. On a '73, add another 5lbs (no bumper tits), on a '74, another 5lbs (no rear bumper tits). On a '75, about 80lbs.

Getty Design is generally considered to have the best lids on the market right now.

Unless my local truck scales are REALLY off I am at 1875 right now.
each wheel and tire is 30 pounds slicks are light.
Tangerine header, no sound deading, no carpet or tar, Odessy battery, Sparco seats, fiberglass front bumper. No deck lid springs. Thats about it
Going for Lexan rear and sides glass deck lids and rear bumper.
Official wieght when I get it corner balanced. Or go attend a Divisional event.
Manual headlights are also on the list

I definitely want to hear about it when you get done.

Your truck scales could be accurate...
but they would of been calibrated for much heavier loads so it will be good to confirm them when you get done on a set of corner scales...

awesome!

Joe,

building off of James posts about composits.
sounds like 45lbs for the sheetmetal.

plus
door stuff and rear glass could be another 60-70lbs.

sounds like that would put you around 1760-ish

just a wild a@@ guess.
