Friend of a friend...wants me to source an engine for him and do an R&R install.....not like it's hard....sounds like it would be fun and a challenge.

BTW the two salvage yards don't even want an exchange.

Sounds like they aren't worth it to rebuild.....anyone ever do one or just tear one down to see what's up?

what are new crate motors from Porsche going for? This is an automatic and basic model....any idea what the book rate for an R&R is?

964 motors (long blocks) are about $12K, FWIW. One would think these are somewhere in that range.

Check with the local Porsche dealer...there was a factory recall issue...its worth a phone call, give them the VIN number...

If its on the list, get a new motor.

my guess is that a new factory complete engine is in the $6-7,000 range. I know a 996 factory complete engine is well under $10,000.

It's a new breed of engine starting with the Boxster and 996.

That's why people don't rebuild these things.

no clue really, I'm guessing (really g u e s s i n g ) at least $7500 for r & r. and 10 or 11 k for the engine? One really can'tapply a rational price scheme to parts from Zuffenhuasen. I've learned of a few parts prices for parts for the air-cooled cars that were ludicrous. I think it is intensional, to discourage repair. A new targa top for $15,000.00? Crimeny. Or maybe just crime. Well, it's their company, not mine.
I like boxters. I love the way they drive. I think there iis a strong similarity in 914s and Boxters on the road. I think it should be worth a rebuild, but thats not based on dollars and sense...er...cents.

While visiting the Porsche Dismantler in Burbank last Presidents day, this new 2006 was drug in --possible Motor/Tranny ?

A factory refurbished boxster motor is in the 6-7k range (factory seal, warrenty, and updates). Install aint too bad if i can do it. Same as a 914, but you need to unhook those red ball cups for the lid, remove parts of the rear suspension, and feed the oil filler hose through the trunk. Just nuts and bolts.

A 996 motor is 10k installed (in a 996). That may be a fun one. Search for an X51 motor if you want the extra bling. I'm sure a 996 in a 986 has been covered to death in a non-aircooled forum somewhere on the net.

I bought my 1999 boxster used with 18000 miles. Engine pucked, took it to a shop and they pulled plugs, bent valve. Called Porsche dealer and asked them if they would help. Service rep. said "NO". I asked him to contact the factory rep for the area. He called me later in the day and said "go buy a lottery ticket, the rep said bring it in and we will throw in a new motor. Thank you Porsche.

I didn't think it matters, new or used, for most recalls. I'm still thinking of bringing in my 914 for the HO recall.

There was a problem with the 97 engine (I don't think 98 had it) what caused a sleeve to slip. I haven't heard of any other major engine problems that caused a recall (besides the rear main seal, shaft seal leaks, oil separator problems). I just checked a number of recall lists and the 01 didn't have anything about the engine listed, just a tiptronic problem.

I haven't heard of many people rebuilding the engine.

The recall on motors for the Boxster was for pre 99. It had to do with the method that they were using to install the cylinders. It usually failed in the first 40K so being this is an 01 with 120K I doubt that it would apply.
Porsche doesn't bother rebuilding this motor. They replace it with a 10,000 crate motor. Which when you're talking about 10,000 you have to consider the 12,000 996 motor right?
Last year at Marina AX on the first day I blew off an oil line due to an overfill by an oil change jockey. Made a spectacular white cloud of smoke just as I entered the course for my first run. I saw corner workers running toward me giving me shut down signs and I saw the smoke behind me so I shut off the key and put the clutch in. I was literally able to coast entirely around the course and into the pit area. I think Trekkor and some hot looking gal with 914 helped push it over to the area I was set up at. I recall trying to get the gal to steer and I would push but she said something about pushing cars around her dads shop all the time and so I went for a Trekkor powered ride (with help from his friend). I recall thinking as I was coasting around the course "do I want to spend the 10K or stretch for the 12K 996.... Then of course I discovered the problem and fixed it in the pit area.
Wrecked cars are getting easier to find because the value has dropped to the point that even a relatively small accident totals the car.

Negative at P-car World for warranty.....$7800USD for a new replacement.....the guy's gonna try and make a deal on the fire unit and get both the tranny and the engine.

Dunno if I'll do the job as I'm supposed to go to Lost Wages next week with the family. Gonna see Elton John instead of Celine this time....thank God...
