914World.com _ 914World Garage _ what can i get for 5k?

Posted by: new914fan Mar 24 2006, 08:16 PM

hello all
i'm looking to replace my urs4 with something more fun to drive and more economical...
i've always liked the 914 and now seems like my opportunity to own something that'll be fun in the sun...

my driving experience other than the urs4 includes a mk2 mr2, so i'm really looking forward to something that'll take the corners hard!!

here's the question... with a budget of around 5K, is it possible to get a good conditioned 914? after seeing the thread on $50 paint jobs, i can deal with a 914 that needs paint and missing stereo (i would have swapped out the stock unit anyways) if so... please point me to the right direction... i value the members opinion in that if y'all know of a 914 in good condition, let me know!!

further, are there 914 restoration specialists in southern california who charge a reasonable rate??

last question.... have any of y'all changed the speedometer to something that'll accomdate modern highway driving speeds??

thanks!!

5k should give you a nice 914 with no problems that you can drive daily.

Check out the classifieds..

the 73-76 cars had 150 mph speedo's but the cars can only do 115 mph so you shouldnt have any problems on a modern freeway with the speedo.

$5000 will buy a decent 914 in Cali

The car on the classifeds that is 74 2.0 914 Alaska blue for $4000 is a west coast car. Just relocatd to Pennsylvania, a week ago. Seller wants a Boxster. So this is your oppurtunuity to get a really nice car below your top price.
I sold this car originally, if you have any questions I will be happy to answer them.

5K should get you a nice daily driver.
Thats the amount I started with and feel it was a solid start.
Repairs will be need, but thats what happens with 30 + years on a car.
Just make sure you know what you are looking for.
Look in past threads about rust and figure out what year you want.
Ask questions here before you buy.

Well, I think Andrew's right, Craig. That's how I read his question.

In reviewing the original post there is no reference to:

BUT I DON'T WANT TO DRIVE ALL THE WAY TO FREAKIN' PENNSYLVANIA TO FIND ONE!

If that would have been included I would have not suggested he search outside of Calif.

i guess if he asked craig the right questions he wouldn't have to DRIVE ALL THE FREAKIN WAY TO PENNSYLVANIA to find one under his budget. ships for less than that would be my guess. that $1k save buys alot of konis, ball joints, turbo tierods,...hey craig!! have those upgrades been performed?

Wow, now potential owners are looking outside of CA for a 914, thanks guys for shipping all of the great cars out of state.... wink.gif

Anyway, I agree that 5k should get you a nice car, with minimal amount of work/upgrade. I'm not certain what a urs4 or mk2 is, but remember, these are 30+ yr old cars that will need maintenance that a newer car will not, ie, adjust valves, timing, checking points, unless you are able to get a car that has been retrofitted with the new 'electronic' ignition enhancements.

Good luck with your search and if you do find a nice example, please have a fellow non-member go with you to check the car out.

thanks!!
yeah, PA is a little far to get a 914.... unless someone knows of a cheap and GOOD auto shipper

a urs4 is a 92-94 audi s4, 5 cyl single turbo... i have a 93
mk2 is a 2nd generation mr2... i had a n/a 91 that was slightly modded

it's good to know that 5k is a good price to start with...
now i'll be on the look out!!

what i also love about this forum is that whenever there is a car for sale... someone on this board seems to have some knowlege of it so i can get a pretty honest opinion of the condition =)

so... all the CA folks out there help me out!!

thanks
