If one were to take an old 912 trans with attractive gearing, pull out the shafts, will these fit into a 914 box? I am still unsure of compatability of these two trans.
Thanks!
Pat
The 912, other than the 912E, uses a 901 gearbox. The parts inside are interchangable with a 914 gearbox.
Thanks, Clay.
Is there any way of telling by case numbers, etc, the difference between a 912 and a 912E trans?

I am running 3rd and 4th outta a 5 speed 912 gear box. Nice close ratios for upshifts and downshifts between 2nd thru 4th in my 2056 power band. I kept the stock ZD 5th for freeway drives.
Exchange the gear sets not the shafts
Thanks again:
This is for the 2.7 track car. Seems I'm having a bit of trouble finding an already built side shift trans, so I figure I'll collect some gearsets in case I have to build one. Supposedly this box has a real high ring and pinon set also.

Get the one in the best condition as parts are getting expensive. Sliders, dogteeth in good condition are a must in buying a "good" box or its just a core tranny.
Pull the gear cluster out if you are going to buy a box and look closely at it. If you need some tranny reading, read Redbeard's articles.
