The VW cup holder I ordered came in today. This http://www.jbugs.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=351 was mentioned in another thread here recently. It fits in to the ashtray location on older VW. Well seems there is a bunch of different sizes depending on what type VW you have. I emailed them asking for dimenstion info on the part that slides into the ashtray mount but of course I haven't heard anything back. After asking for some VW ashyray measurements here and other VW club sites I ordered the late style type III cup holder. I knew it wasn't going to be wide enough but looked like it would fit inside the 914 ashtray shell.
I took an old ashtray I had here and removed the black front plate and metal flip up clip and holder. I then cut the front metal section and bent it down. Now the new cup holder fit inside the shell but was to thick to slide all the way back in the shell. I cut the end of the holder off (polyresin type board) and just used 4 wood screws to hold it to the ash tray shell. Works like a champ.
Fuctions like the old ashtray did, the ashtray shell is held in place buy the spring clip on top. Went for a high speed test drive with quick turns, never moved at all. It doesn't block the vent controls, slides back out of the way like the old ashtray did. I'm happy.
Photo with holder pushed all the way back to the dash.

Pulled all the way out to locking point of ashtray shell.

Cool! Too bad it doesn't just slide in. Let us know if you get any more info - like the Type II fits better or whatever. It looks like the cupholder will work fine either pushed in or extended.
I can't believe I missed this one....great idea Garold
I bought a "spare" ash tray months ago, intending to kep one stock, modify the other by putting a piece of good wood in and cutting out a hole, maybe with a wire u-thing swinging loose under to bottom the cup, like the one in my '90 Subie. Like lots of things, I haven't gotten the round tuit i need to complete the job yet, so it remains in the planning stage. Has anyone done it, and can they post pics?
search SMOG cupholder or smog cup holder... Curvie and the SMOG guys have a slick solution using an ashtray, a floppy disk, and 1 other item for the holder part.
Sorry for the hijack garold.
Here's a pic of the SMOG drink holder
Here's a thread about it:

Update on the Volswagen drink holders:
I ordered the one for the http://www.jbugs.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=3514; it looks like this when istalled.
Nice job. Wish I would have known about the VW Thing holder, but mine still works. I have plans to lower the holder also, but haven't done it yet.
Actually, I bought the square back first. My 1991 Chevy pick-up didn't have a drink holder either, so I figured I could use the squareback there too. I took a chance and tried the Thing to see if it would work, and was pleased to see it was a little easier modification. It bounces quite a bit, but works pretty well. Thanks for the great idea to start with!
For those of you with center consoles that are either non original or willing to cut(eek) another option is to find just about any almost luxo model and with a simple bracket, you can have a cupholder that retracts into the console when you press it in. when not retracted you have a real cupholder for two. the model I got mine from(sry no pics) was from a mid to late 90 Intregra GSR.
Oh BTW the last car I had this on was a late model CRX, havent tried it yet on the teener.
That's the one I had seen that a person could buy.
I intentionally kept mine with a low profile after it bottoms out as not to block my forward vision. I made the bends so that it was sitting level when pushed in.
Don't have to worry about heater controls with water cooled, unless I would want to run the fresh air blower. I could have kept the distance between the bends closer, but I'm not building church pews. This way if I don't want to use it anymore, I can just remove the rivets and take it off with out having trashed the tray.
