914World.com _ 914World Garage _ O/T - why I have learned to hate California

Posted by: byndbad914 Mar 27 2006, 04:35 PM

so I had to run out to Corona to pickup some streamline tubing for my rear wing uprights on Saturday, so I thought kill 3 birds with one stone - swing by the chassis shop in Orange to see the progress and take some pics, head out to Corona and get the tubing, then go out to Fontana for a couple of hours to spectate at the CFOS.

91 freeway is a joke - at least the "freeway" part. NO such thing as free moving traffic in SoCal anymore. Where the fro are all of these people going at 2pm on a Saturday anyway! I left Orange and traveled 13 miles - took 40 minutes on the freeway. So, for those out there that aren't familiar with how bad traffic can be - this isn't LA and the fabled 405. Nope - SEVEN freaking lanes of crawling traffic.

Needless to say, by the time I got to Aircraft Spruce, I just turned around and headed back home. Interstate 15 doesn't get any better, so I figured another 20 miles of driving and it would have been 5pm - party over and I would be just pulling up to the gate.

check the speedo - I think the "91" in 91 freeway stands for 9.1 mph. headbang.gif

It was a 1/2 hour already into the drive and just barely at a point to see the Liberty dam wacko.gif

The 91 sucketh! I can get from SD to the 91 in 50 minutes, then it takes 30 minutes to go 10 miles to Anaheim Hills.

damn Aaron - you are fast - beat my second post!

went to Aircraft Spruce just off Serfas Club road. They sell streamline tubing to make some bitchin' uprights for my wing - Roger Sheridan told me about them and that is what he used. I wanted to have a single, big tail piece like an aircraft just for look (though drag on the upright would be stupid) and then I saw Roger had the same shape but much smaller, and the two narrower uprights looked awesome IMO.

I am such a copycat...

yup. aircraft spruce is off railroad st....

next tine you need some steel, try joor brothers off smith. huge steel place....

agree.gif it took me 35 minutes to travel from LA to Orange (37 miles in 35 minutes), about 3 minutes to hit the 55 and whammo - lock the brakes up and start crawling. I just leave it in second so it won't idle up to speed as quickly. Sad to be idling your way out to Corona on a freeway.

I thought mid-afternoon might be a bit easier to miss the people leaving in the AM to go out to Lake Perris, or Vegas or the river, or ?? Where the hell are all those people going at 2pm?

Posted by: TonyAKAVW Mar 27 2006, 04:50 PM

On rare occasion I would go to Corona from Redondo beach for a 7 pm meeting and it would take me two and a half hours to go 55 miles leaving at 5:00 pm.

91 sucks, and there isn't a good alternative.

was that because of that suv on its side in the goat field by chance?

Let's see the tubing! thisthreadisworthlesswithoutpics.gif

I dropped the tubing at the chassis shop on my way back, I am using aluminum tubing they carry, but here is a snapshot off their website for the chromoly tubing - same shape though so you get an idea of what I's talkin' 'bout.

I'll add a shot of Sheridan's car in a second - also on his website and a bit hard to make out the tubing, but you will see how he placed it. His mounting is pretty narrow (IIRC 18" between) and I am going to move it out to about 30" between - he gets some rocking on his. That moment issue is why I would have to run a big single upright and why it would drag so poorly.

I avoid The Green River Parkingway like the plague that it is. Go the 57 to the 60 and come back to your goal. It will be much faster.

I thought about that, but to get back to the Serfas Club exit I would have to cut down through the corridor on the 71 (I think it is the 71...73 - you know what I mean hopefully- by the liberty dam where the photo was taken) and the 71 can be just as bad if not worse. And the 60 is slow sometimes - the 57 can be a mess out at the junction of the 60, so really, I would probably break even in this instance and add miles to the drive.

Had I just been going to the CFOS - not Corona as well - I would have gone 57 to the 10E and probably been somewhat okay. That 91E really blows - and has for years - and as they have widened it, they have just built more homes out that way to slow it back down.

George, I had Fastrak back when I lived in South OC and was really wishin' I still had it Saturday! But I haven't been east of the 55 on the 91 in close to a year if not longer. But it dumps out just before where I took this pic, so it would have saved me a solid 20 minutes, but wouldn't have helped the CFOS cause.

So watch out Texas and Colorado - here we come! At least me... I should know if the TX deal is going to work out in a few months. If not, off to Denver, CO area probably just after summer.

Naturally you're only doing 9.1 mph......you're driving an SVT after all (Slow Vehicular Transport). laugh.gif

actually, got that a bit backwards - the truck is extremely fast - but notice the following distance. av-943.gif

Brakes are WAY too small for this truck. I was pounding on some "fast" imports at The Streets of Willow a year ago and they couldn't believe they had to wave a truck by because they were slowing me down. But I was all over their bumper because it wouldn't stop cool.gif I pulled in after the first session of the day and popped the hood to let it cool down and there were about 15 guys crawling all over that truck trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Couldn't catch the Z06s though. It took them about 5 laps to catch me though. So I am pretty surprised by the truck frankly.

I smoked the brakes and boiled the fluid that day - and didn't have a bleeder so I drove home with a seriously squishy brake pedal. That was an unwanted surprise.

The fit and finish of the vehicle is all Ford though - completely horrible panel alignment. I think it was built in Canada you know beer.gif

It is silver already, so maybe I should add the orange and black paint scheme to it too like that 951 idea.gif

I got a ride in a coworker's SVT and it is definitely fast. Funny thing is, he burned out his brakes at Willow Springs as well!

He also had a spark plug launch itself out of the head.

380 HP and 450 Ft-lbs of torque is fun even if it does weigh 4000+ lbs.
