Dumb Q but it's Friday..... so there you go
my answer, it's a name ....notice there are a few different Carrera's thru the years....it might signify that that particular model is a little better than the other models (of the same type)
at first, i believe it was a name to signify a high performance model (356 carrera, carrera 2.7, 924 Carrera GT) then it just became synonomous with the 911..
The name derives from the Carrera Panamerica, a road race across the Baja Peninsula on mostly paved roads that's had an on-again/off-again history. In the 1950s, several European sports car manufacturers competed fairly seriously in it, using big-name drivers like Phil Hill. Porsche competed, and thus the Carrera name was born.
The 356 and early 911 based Carrera models (like the '73 Carrera RS, which was a 2.7 when the regular model was a 2.4) were high-performance models.
From 1984-on, the Carrera name basically signified nothing. ALL 911s were Carreras during the 3.2 era ('84-'89), then the 964s were Carrera 2 or Carrera 4 depending on 2wd v. 4wd, etc. One can argue this was Porsche's first shot at dropping the numbering scheme and going to names: Carrera, Cayman, Cayenne, etc.
Sounds kinda like the way Chevy badged the Camaro IROC.
I watched a doc on the history channel about the Panamerica, from the beginning to the end. What a wild race it was especially in the early
days. The drivers had no protection, the roads were poor and the tires were dismal. A well known driver ( I don't remember the name) was killed duering the race, bringing on the beginning of the end.
real carerra's have 4 cams
I asked because I have seen a 914 with the Carrera side script and it looked very nice and seemed to work with the style. Plus I figured you guys would know.
I wasn't sure if I dropped a 3.+L engine and had the brakes off a "carrera" would I have 914 with carrera like features? I don't think it's right to JUST slap a badging decal on the side of another car, if it doesn't have any of the traits of that car...Make sense??
BUT
If it was just a name and there was no real difference between a Carrera 911 and a non badged 911 then cool..it's just a name and if I loke the look I could use it.
Thanks
carerra means race in a few languages.... i think
La Carrera ain't over yet. Here's the http://www.panamrace.com/ It's on my TODO list.
914's should not be baged with the carrera script because they are Carerror's. Made by Volkeswagon in the early 70's it was an auotmotive-mistake. Therfore a VW Carerror.

The last car to be called a Carrera before every 911 became one in '84

A 924- circa 1981

Is Aaron starting to get snobby on us?
yeah they diluted the name when ALL 911s in 84 ....didn't help that they were fat pigs and had valve guide issues....
BTW...."I" made the Carrerror scripts for Joe.....
Some of my stuff will be given away or silent auctioned at the WCC 06....

Nice plates John! The 1975 Carrera was the first 911 wide body imported into the Unites States as a consumers vehicle. I believe that were slightly less the 400 imported. I have the factory Certificate of Authenticity on the my car pictured. It has slightly less than 100,000 on the machine which sports the stock leather interior and a sun roof. They were know to run very hot with termal reactors to defeat the smog issues in 1975, which at that time even GM, Ford and others were doing. Not a rocketship( 2.7 CIS) in the grunt of the flat six as we have come to know, fantastic ride and handling. This car is stock with the exception of the fiberglass front and rear bumpers I bought from our friend Dave B. at TRE. In that front grille I have the same MEGA B&B front oil cooler the I have in my 914-6. Dave B. is perhaps more knowlege on these early 911 Carrera's and RSR's, RS's, 1974 IROC's, and the 3.0 RSR's than anyone I know.

I have a 75 euro carrera, that I had shipped in a few years ago. It has the 2.7 with MFI, the vin is 911560xxxx the fifth number 6 indicates a Euro Carrera. Gus Pfister at Pacific Fuel Injection checked all the numbers ,even on the fuel injection pump. I really love the car. Sorta a pain to get it registered here, but was worth the trouble
That euro Carrera is no sheep in wolf's clothing like its US counterpart.
That's HOT! Mine is missing H.P. big time compared to Mechanical INJ EURO Model. Thanks for the secret santa gift again! It's in my bar.
