Pilled the dipstick this morning and this is what I saw. Looks like I'm about to blow a head gasket?. The truck runs good and has never overheated. WTF?. I really don't want to fix this.. First pic bad focus but, you can see the milkshake on the dipstick..

Tear all of this apart?.. I'd rather give a gallon of blood. Ford POS

milkshake means water in the oil...probably from leaking head gasket
1. check the price to have a shop fix it.
2. check the price to have a shop install motor of your choice.
3. fix it yourself in a weekend.
What's the truck worth in good shape? What year is it?

You get that from oil and water mixing. You know, these more modern cars have this stuff called "Anti-freeze". Such a PIA when it mixes with oil. If you leave it in there long enough, it'll look like this in your valve covers: I found this after I bought an 87 Chevy C10 with a puke EFI 305 in it. Cracked heads. Arg!!! Seriously - don't pussy-foot around. If you're gunna keep the truck, stick a 302 HO in it and don't ever look back. Tom |

we did a 289 in a prerunner ranger it was carbed tho.... a 302 will fit and pass smog i assume? |
This is a case that I vote for a sawzall party because......
I HATE FORD PICKUPS!!!
The only 2 wrecks I have had in my life were in my 914, and both times I was sitting still when hit by a 3/4 TON FORD PICKUP!!!!!
Cut that bastard up and sell it for scrap!!!!

Check http://www.therangerstation.com to see if this is a common problem with the 4.0. My truck is a '94 Mazda (same thing, different name), with the 3.0 V6 and 193k on the odo. Biggest problem so far has been the A/C and transmission. The tranny just got replaced < 2k ago because a bearing inside decided to spontaneously become a bushing.

Hi
I have done more 4.0l heads then I have fingers and toes. I was a Ford tech from 87 to 95. Yes this is a problem with these motors, not so much with the 3.0l.
BIG MISCONCEPTION is to automatically asume its the head gaskets (its moreso the heads crack), many times its just the front cover distorting !. You need to presure test the motor in place, and watch your coolant. This is a simple test, thats a bit time consuming but it will give you a yes or no answer.
Move the piston to TDC, compression, both valves closed. Install a leak down tool and put 100psi of shop air into the cyl, watch if your coolant rises in the rad = problem with cyl pressure and coolant system. In my experience, a head problem on a 4.0l, anuf to milkshake your oil, it should have ran like shit. I'm betting on a timing cover.
I always do a timing cover with the heads, just to be sure, but if its for sale and the problem is just the T-cover...
All modern trucks are a PITASSS to work on. and head/collant problems are not reserved for Fords...
Good luck with it

Must be nice to be able to think nice thoughts like that. (Use a nice roller cam 351 not that wimpy little 302) No can do here in the peoples republic of Kalifornia. Evil smog laws make it almost imposible or very expensive to do a swap like that. Even if it's perfect you will get hassled every time you have to get it smogged. After my good old 86' truck blew a head gasket and warped the heads I fixed it sold it cheap and bought a new smog exempt diesel. |

A) CA lets something like 1500 "exemptions" the 1st of every year. If you're one of the very lucky few to get one, you can legally run your blown, carburatated 426 hemi powered... 2006 Mazda Miata on the road. The problem is the car has to be 100% constructed & inspected before you can apply for the exemption. If you don't get one, your car sits in your garage for another year until Jan. when you pay your fees (again), have it inspected (again), & try/hope to be "1st in line", ...again. & B)Not every area in CA is subject to the yearly/bi-yearly smog test/inspection registration requirement. This is a little known fact, but fact it is. I happen to know this, because I live in one of those area's. If I buy a vehicle, it has to pass an inspection to get plates/change ownership. Afterwards, it's never inspected again! (well, assuming I never sell it). For instatance, my old 5.0 autoi-x'r, I recently sold, had every piece of emmisions equipment removed (EGR, EVAP, air pump, etc), long tube headers, no converters, & the gas filler pipe restrictor removed. It was CA registered & driven each year untill I sold it. (& btw, since it was already previously CA registered, it only had to pass the sniffer test when I sold it - which it did, well within the allowed stds for an '88) I'm not entirely sure as to how this came about - if it's based off county population, or by milage to an inspection station, but I do know that not everyplace in CA plays by the same smog rules. |

My buddy tried that route. You have to know someone on the "inside" to get that deal. They are all gone within seconds after the year starts. Those "special" areas are getting scarce - another friend used to live in one (he had lots' of friends who registered cars at his address) suddenly he no longer lived in a "special" area and had to have smog checks. |
