which pin on an IC is considered to be 1?

the ICs have a dot or u shaped mark on one end. If this dot is supposed to be on the left, which pin is pin 1?

Is pin one top left pin? or top right pin?

or

bottom left pin or bottom right pin..

Im probably thinking to much about this..

The dot or notch go up and pin 1 will be on the upper LEFT. The numbering goes down that side and up the other so that the highest number pin will be on the opposite position from pin 1.

Sorry, double check my post. I typed too fast and put right instead of left. I fixed it.
