Ill start!
I added up all the PP purchses i made over the last 3 years or so and was supprised that it totaled over $4000. THis is a warning, dont look up old orders on PP unless you want to know
I guess you need to define "spent on".
Does that include routine maintenance like oil changes, tires, etc?
Does that include tools?
After all, in the summer, I prefer to use my 914 as a daily driver. That's cost avoidance for my Jeep.
A no-shit number for my 914-6 would be... about 12K. Purchase price of the car was about 6.5k. That's counting big purchases only. No routine maintenance, no tires, no cost of Clay driving up from Texas to eat my steaks and bratwurst.

haha, i just voted on a post in the recycle bin ...
man, i must be bored ...
I think it got moved when we were replying!
That poll was pretty jacked up.
What the hell...
I fixed the poll. Should we fish out the topic? It's a good one.

Now that you fixed it my answer is different. LOL Actually, there are two answers. I prefer not to count it, but I can add a lot of it my head and it's a BIG number. |
I'm gonna move it...

I'm at $25K+, it would be higher, but you didn't offer the $30K barrier.... and it's still a POS....

7-12k
Get it all together, and I might break even!
Six figures... easy
anyone want to buy it for ... say... 50k?
*get rich quick scheme is forming in my head*
Ask me after I'm done with the engine swap.
Do tools count? The ones you just must have to work on a 914, welders, mills, bandsaws etc.
I'm in for the 0 - 1000 catagory cause you didn't make one lower. I have been tearing down my first that I got for free. Found about 4 bucks in change under the seat.
LOL
Guess I'm the lowball winner!!
Not counting the purchase price.
I also have a couple a pints of blood, quite a bit of Knuckle skin, gallons of sweat. All for the price of a few cc's of adreniline Seems fair to me.

I haven't spent any real money on my car. Usually I pay in trade.
I wish I had a trade.
5-7K and climbing. I'll be in the upper brackets before I'm through.
Doug, you need to update your progress thread.
After I went past 25K I quit keeping track and now just stuff all the records into a folder, but the end in in sight
I'm just over $5K, including purchase price and shipping from the west coast.

I've got $5k in beer alone...
I'm afraid to total up all the $$ spent so far, I'm afraid I'll
6 figures easy....
Hell, I have at least 25K into the motor and trans!
Some day I will sit down and tally up all the receipts and I am sure the number will be more frightening then my best guesstimate.
I didnt include interest paid on the credit card so until thats paid off the cost will continue to increase.
This year Im getting hit hard, engine rebuild with bells and whistles, new turbo fabrication, paint job and all new trim.
The upside is its still way less than a new high performance sports car and will out perform most that sell under 200,000 I can also claim owning the only 3.1 turbo powered twinplug 914 .
just reviewed all my records concerning the teener
bought it for EUR 10,830 in June 1999
spent EUR 5,000 since then - including really everything (even maintenance & tools)
but the major part was EUR 3,650 for all seals, lines, liquids, filters new and some basic cosmetic things - something wasn't nescessary, but it gave me a better feeling

As it's driving today, 15 - 25. Including parts waiting for install, over 25. I'm not sure if the parts stash is over 10K yet...
Eric
Let's see.......
For the orange one, I spent $10,500 for the one owner, all documents, keys etc. Engine blew on the way home. $6500.00 Engine later. Not much else.
For the new red one......$11,500 for the completely rust free restoration roller, 5-lug, SC front, Vented rears, pristine 914/6 interior, oil cooler. Quaife:$800. 915WEVO:$6500.00. 3.2 liter/6: $6600.00. BS parts: $2000.00.
Rothsports final assembly: TBD.
SO.......
1973 2.0 SIGNAL ORANGE 914: $17,000.00
1970 3.2/6 915WEVO RED 914: $28,600.00 AND COUNTING

But, I'll bet it's 4-5 times what I paid for the car
Must be love!
5K just in beer
Unfortunately, the longer you own your car, the more money you'll have in it, so this poll may be skewed somewhat.
I've had mine for about 19 years.
From day one, 11/85. From the spreadsheet I keep of all 914 costs.
purchase price- $5,000
upgrades - $17,144
six conversion, 911 brakes, suspension, ...
Some 'up-grades' left with the 4 cyl 2.0L engine in 1987.
mantainence/repairs - $19,225
tune ups(21), tires(6 sets), clutches(2), tranny rebuild(1), windsheilds(3), cables, ....
I'm just finishing up head rebuild, new clutch, cables, new fuel lines in center tunnel, gas tank flush/seal, etc. These costs/receipts have not been entered into spreadsheet yet.
Still cheaper than buying a new Porsche every 10 years.
My $2000 deposit has yet to be cashed, so all I have "invested" so far is about $200 in books. (I have an uncontrollable urge to collect books on any and every subject...)
Owning 2 914s for 20 years makes me think that I never want to know how much Betty and I spend on them.
But what is the cost of love? We love them like our children, would never sell them, and will do anything for them. They are our family.
Cost does not matter.
But the employees at Zims know us on sight!

Despite this gargantic list, the car has been massively affordable. I've put 138000 miles or so on it over the course of the ownership. The expense of almost everything was primarily labor that I did myself. Realistically, I guess it may be $15,000. One of these days I gotta redo the 2nd gear synchros, and my frontmain bearing seal has started leaking, but really I got no more mods to do
EXCEPT FOR THE WINDOW LIFT KIT I JUST GOT FROM DR EVIL!!!!
oh well. I'll add it to the list when installation is done.
More than one of these...

I must have around 14k and 5 million in my labor
5 mo's ago - the inital purchase for the car was $1.00.
currently up to 5-6k$. Expect ~10-11k by year end, for this V8 build, after I sell off the extra parts.
..probably like most of you, I view it as a hobby expense and probably will lose money when/if I sell it.
More $ and more $ and more $ everyday. It's starting to bum $ me $ out $.
Have you ever seen the budget deficit clock in real time.
http://www.toptips.com/debtclock.html
6 figures, but i'm never ever going to add it up.
I had more than $25K in the car, including the purchase price, when I was still running BP.
The cost to go to FM should have been less than $5K, but it ended up being twice that.
Going to AX2, with the new motor - - - - OMG I don't want to add it up as that would ruin the first nice day we have had in Northern California in 45 days.
I think I added it all up once and it was around 8k, not counting that it will need a paint job before long...
I kept a spreadsheet and put everything into it. I did ALL the work myself and spent just over 10K. The only labour I paid for was $75 to have a good body man put the last of 5 clearcoats on for me to save me some wet sanding and $90 to have the side bolsters on the seats replaced. Next Time I will do it all myself.

In my -4 overall more than 12k in my -6 never ending story......
If I invest the money for the -6 in beer I will be an alcoholic
I've had my car for about a month and a half and my records show that I've spent $3053.67, but that doesn't include fluids and tools and stuff. That's just parts and the price of the car. I was saving to buy a much 'nicer'(newer) project car, but I ended up picking this teener up for 600 bucks that had been sitting for about 7 years. I've had to do all the things that need to be done with a car that's been sitting so long, but I'm happy with the perchase. It's a much cooler car than what I was looking at. BTW, I'm supposed to get some help me put the engine and tranny in today. After the money I've spent and the work I've done, I'm very anxious to get some results. I've never even driven a teener before. Wish me luck.
Mark D.
Damn... Thats why she is so pissed about that car! I've dumped over $5k in it in the 1 year I've had it and still only scratched the surface! (good thing it was a wedding present, she'd never make me get rid of it )
I will be in the low 10% even with a spare motor, paint job, purchase price and parts! How did that happen?
Crazy banana superiority dance?
Nah, kept the money crappin to a limit, so farrrrr.
Do you include the price of jackstands in the cost of ownership?
Cost of 914 ownership for the past 31 years.....incalculable.
Pride of 914 ownership for the past 31 years....boundless.
Look on wifey's face if I share the total $$$ amount....priceless!
I've spent 1388.05 on my car (including the purchase price) to fix all of the rust and make it drivable (that included a budget engine rebuild). The only piece of the pie thats missing now is the cost of paint.
If you actually keep track, and keep records, do it for insurance purposes just in case.
Just me.... Beyond that I don't even think about it. It's a hobby. Doesn't matter what it costs. I bought my car for $2000. Have bought a couple hundred in parts tops. The rest is hobby history. Surely I've put more time and money into it, but that's my reward.
To me it's about the enjoyment of the process. If it becomes about the $$$ then it's not fun anymore.
I have spent a small fortune on emails, faxes and phone calls just searching for a 914!!! Ha ha ha etc etc etc.
This begs the next question.
Of the parts you bought, how many are installed on the car?
Do I count the shed I bought to store it in the winter? In 2000. Which is now filled with 914 parts purchased to install on the car? Jane! Stop this crazy thing!
Someone invent a Jetson's 914 Rosie PLEASE.
$14K at last count.
In 5 years I have put about $25K in the car put that includes 4 years of driving the 1.8 engine and making tons of upgrades. It also includes the six conversion, bodywork, paint, fibergalss, etc.
I don't count the 20K shop built to store a 15K car.....I'm too smart for that
I've got ~$3k in mine, and I've been driving it almost daily, as well as one DE, since I bought it last August. The $20k garage goes up this fall, but I'd have had to build it whether or not I bought the 914. Now, it's just that much more justifiable.
I did not keep track of the receipts along the way of the rebuild process. I did this intentionally My project is a great hobby, NOT an investment!
I sat in the "library" the other day and flipped through the 914 section of the Mid America Direct catalog. I no longer need to buy any of the parts they have in the catalog -that must be $$$$.
I was gonna vote twice; for each car, but ya can't. I voted regarding my '70 1.7, which I'll gladly fess up to, including a list I prepared recently. I even brag about it to my wife
But I would never add up the V8 car (doghouse smiley).
Attached image(s)
Well, with money in the 6, I could have a 986S paid for, but it still wouldn't be a 914 The 4 banger, well just a good used SC.
More $$$$ in it than I can get out of it
In the 10+yrs of ownership, prob 10K to 20K. Loose range b/c I got it while in college on a v limited budget then started working and making decent money & bought lots of stuff on a whim - much of which is extra "just in case" parts.
I added up receipts last summer and got close to $10k, and thats the receitps that I kept...
The times spent w/my old man and the volumes of books which could be written about the joy/pain of rebuilding & keeping the putt putts running is priceless. Lots of good times drinking beer after a long day of garage work - kackling like hyena's... Times I'll remember when he's long gone - which no price tag can do justice.
-pt
a thousand more than i had last week
$9000K for roller
$1000K shipping
$1000K to rebuild motor
$1000K misc. parts
$1000K in ETOH to drown my sorrow over car
Too afraid to add up all the receipts for fear that my wife may some day read this post. On the other hand, I must say that my stash of old/new parts is easily over 2K by now (even have ONE deep six - no calls please! Unless you have a matching deep six to sell me). Also, thinking back I must say that I had barely any tools before I bought my first 914. Now, I have a Sear's tool box taller than me with enough tools to easily open up a garage. That's probably the best part of the whole adventure.
Hi Ron,
Yep, I've got every receipt for every car build I've done on the Porsche's. And I've added them up....very ugly.....
What a sickness I have....

I think the "KEY" is to pace yourself. Yea, the total now is a big number...but I've enjoyed every step. I have a vintage car that drives like a sports car and "it's paid for!" Still having fun...
I voted in the 15K-25K range, although that's over a 25 year span, since I bought it in 1981...and, a large chunk of that expense has gone to fund High Performance House though, it is one of the best 914 shops in Nor-Cal.
You're welcome, Rich & Larry!
Ken
Beautiful original 914 Ken....there is something very clean about your narrow bodied car. When I bought mine, it was bare metal with the flares already welded on. so I went with the GT look.

Is it bad if if I have spent over 20K?
over 25K?
over 30K?
I have spent more than my (used) boxster S cost.........is that bad?
My name is ___________ and I have a 914problem.
The good part of having a 914 instead of being an alchoholic is that you don't have to go to all those meetings!
Someday it will be finished, but not while I'm alive.
As of now I'd like to adjust my total down since some parts have been sold and this takes me over 1K down from the previous total down to 4K.
Hate me!
Sherman1,
That is the cleanest 914 I've seen in a long time. I love the white!
Lemme see,
A type IV built by Henry SChmidt at Super Tech. (2.5 litre) (150 HP)
A Flared body.
Accusump set up. (Yet to be installed with a front cooler)
911 front end
Drilled rears for 5 bolt.
James Adams shifter. (the best IMHO)
Powder coated gas tank.
Fresh trans with all new sliders and syncros.
Total so far.
3600.00 So Far.
I assume I will have about 7-8K in this car when done. No more.
I am half done in my book...
And I have enough spare parts to build two more.!!!!!
Clayton
According to my records, which don't include the cost of oil & filters (non-dealer), I have just under 12K in mine. If you add the non-recorded items - add another grand.
But that's 34 years of ownership & a major repaint in 1979. That's less than $400/year, excluding gas & insurance.
I think I'll keep it!

If you don't mind me asking, whats in your car?
Mine pays me dividends every time I drive or look at it.
I keep no receipts, I'm in denial.
Maybe I'm just keeping it looking good for the next owner ?
But - I think you know where I voted.... over 25 (sigh).
is the question about just one 914 or my 914 habbit? do they have a 12 step program for 914 addicts?
The original owner of my teener was my cousin, he bought it in 1974 and he gave it to me in 1990. He put alot of miles on it, he loved that car and took very good care of it, he drove it all over Kalifornia. Unfortunatly for him, he had no mechanical skills what so ever. I think every month or so he would type out a list of items that needed attention and drop it off at the local Porsche repair shop, the lists were pretty amazing. It seems like he spent a good $275.00 to $500.00 everytime it was in the shop. The car was very well maintained, but damn, he spent alot of money on it. I've started totalling up all the work done on the car a couple of times, but it really freaked me out.
I don't think I could afford to spend the money that he spent maintaining it as a DD and having a shop do the work.
I am keeping track of the cost of the rebuild that I am currently doing on it, but fortunatly, I'm doing most of the work myself.
It has been a while since I voted and I need to re-vote. Monday I get my car back from a paint and body trip to the tune of $4800.
T
ide have to say 7-8K including costs for repair after accident, had it for roughly 2 yrs
FINALLY
So I woul rather not add it up,
but since 1983 my receipt folder is about
_____________
______________ That thick
Ah, way to much for still being at the paint shop.
Before Jan 5, 2006, 5:45PM, I had about $7K into my red 914 including all maintenance (Tires, alloys, wheel bearings, brake rotors, brake pads, oil, filters, rattle can paints, ...).
Then my car looked like this:
Insurance Co gave me $7K for my car and I kept the car so by Feb 2006, I was even $$-wise and I had a wrecked 914. I proceeded to spend the $7K on the green 914, 5-lug setup, wheels, tires, chrome bumpers, AC, insurance, title, transport, ...
So at this point, I'm in for about $7K.
Spoke
Depending on how I calculate it.....over 12K, but my labor is free......add that at shop rate, more....
I purchased a 3.2 unfinished project, now on the road....
How much? Well let's put it this way, I could have had a very nice GT3.
any pictures?
How much? Well let's put it this way, I could have had a very nice GT3.
Larry wait till u see it next time, may be a nice Porsche Carrera GT lol
Not sure what i voted when I tried to start this poll, but I am close to the top figure by now, and I still need paint and all the rubber and about 500 miscellaneous bits to get her on the road!

I'm in the $10,000 range.
But I just got my collector plates!!!!! No more tags for five years!!!
(but I just got issued a warning for a broken headlight. man, it's always something. lol )
Well...........not including the price of the car I am at gasp $6500 so far, but it goes for body work & paint , oh and just ordered all my weather seals from GPR last week, so make that $7500. Sssshhh don't tell my wife
I gotta add another $2500.00 to mine,I got my 930 front brake setup back from my powdercoater, and it's time to engage my early Christmas present.
Ron
The only reason I can ans. this is, my wife is gone for the day and can"t walk in on me and find out. In the area of $25,000 including purchase price. A lot yah,but I can't take it with me. Also i am 68 so no kids, house new and payed for
I tell her when she bitches, she smokes, I quite 30 yrs ago, that figures out to About $1,000.00 a yr. so i figure I have another $5,000.00 to go. Dave
well, thankfully the guy before me did the 25k conversion to a 6. I bought it for 12,500 and have spent another 4,000 so far. Thankfully I get all my parts at cost and do my own work or that would easily be another 25k.
funny this old thread came to life today. i just had this disussion yesterday ...
i haven't added up the bills and i probably never will but my guesstimate is around ~40k to date ...
and i'll add a nice WEVO 915 sideshift box to the tab soon ...

I am at 1500 for car + 2000 cage now but this year will be the year of the 914 bills

1000 trans
2000 paint
2000 chasis work
4500 suspension
hmmm ... maybe I should have purchased a finished car ... at least it will be
worth half that when I am done
I've spent over $40k and mine is still an empty tub.
Nice thread to resurrect.
I think I'm between 5-7k. I guess that makes me a newb?
3500 for the car
300 ignition
700 exhaust
200 gauges
200 wevo mounts
oh crap, i should have voted higher for all the random PP and AA stuff
christ, what have i done? i have bought a money pit
I try not to remind myself how much money GTEENER has consumed
But then I drive her on a crisp clear day like today for the first time in months, and she's purring like I drove her yesterday.
MUCHAS GRACIAS LEEMON
...Some people have drug addictions, some people have car addictions and I pity the people who suffer both!
Hmmm... I'm in for $35 so far.
I traded services for the 914. I guess if you look at opportunity cost, I would have charged $800 for the services otherwise.
I bought a Momo steering wheel for $35. Can't find an adapter for a '71 /4 though.
Everything else that I have done so far has been disassembly and cleaning.
My estimate is that by the time I am done, I will have spent $20K. Still less than half the price of an Elise.
Edit: I forgot... I also spent $18 on vinyl to make new door panels.
$1000 for the car in parts
$850 for the 8" fuchs
$700 for the flair group buy
$850 for Len's heads
$150 for a new fender
$40 for Jack post kits
$100 for Misc
SO, I am at $3690 and I haven't done anything yet...

Okay, so do you have any nieces or daughters or sisters... I could make this work
Bought it for 10K and have spent about 1500-2000 a year on it for the last 7 years, so I'm somewhere around 24000.... But I don't plan on ever selling it so it doesn't matter.
After parking my beater 914 five years ago, we recently sold our house due to a move and my wife let me "skim" some money off the top to get back into the 914 habit. I scrapped the poor rusted shell that sat in the back yard and found a rust free driver. Between the new 914 and an engine/tranny rebuild I sit at $20k. The only critical things left to do are new tires and minor upholstry work.
Of course, that doesn't count the fiddling I'll be doing anyway over time-- suspension work, 5-bolt conversion (already have parts from my poor departed donor), seal replacement, new stereo, A/C, etc.
On the plus side, I can now start dumping the seemingly warehouse worth of parts I've been storing for years. It's tough to get rid of stuff when you don't know where you're going with your future car.
The slippery slope is not a straight line but more like a Giant Slalom and I still haven't passed the finish gate, I'm afraid. I have a 2 inch thick pile of receipts (which I will not total) but they are pretty meaningless. Swapping parts in and out, then selling the "outs" (no receipts here) makes tracking the cost impossible. The only way to do it would be to inventory the car at this stage but I have better things to do.
I bought the car 10-12 years back & have made a few changes.

I don't see any difference
Ok. I picked up my 74 2.0L FI on February 25, 2007. Purchased for $3,500.00. Very little rust (no structural problems) Lots of "weird" stuff, like a totally odd (non porsche) alternator on a broken mount. Lots of little items to fix. Bad paint. But very good fundamentals. I drive the 914 to work (and back) every day - it is my daily driver.
One year later, here are the numbers:
Miles Driven: 15,880
Maintenance Professional Services: $2,088.40
Maintenance Parts: $ 1,093.08
Auto Insurance (12 months, Unlimited Miles, Dailyn Driver): $1,200.00
Gas (690.44 Gallons @ Ave $3.20/Gallon): $2,209.41
Oil (30 Qts @ $3.50/Qt): $105.00
Total Amount Expended: 6,609.89
Operating cost per mile: $0.4217
Notes:
1. Cost of car is not included in operating expenses or Operating Cost per Mile.
2. I am a noob to turning a wrench. Prior to March of 2007, I hadn't worked on a car since probably back in 1975. I am a computer geek, so wrench skills were not in my repertoire. My experience is that through the BBS's and the tech articles, there is plenty of step-by-step instructions which makes most maintenance fairly easy. I am performing almost all of my wrenching myself lately, and thoroughly enjoying it.
3. Knowing what I know now (2/25/08) I would have performed all of the professional services myself. I really do not feel I got $2,000 worth of work performed.
4. I have recorded times where I have achieved up to 29 MPG. However, my heavy foot keeps my combined driving at between 23 MPG and 25 MPG.
5. I keep every expense documented in several tabs of a dedicated worksheet.
6. All work is performed via cash - no expenses are being placed on a credit card. This makes my work spread out but financially manageable. I have budgeted about $200.00 per month for parts through December of 2008.
I hope this helps to dispell the "high" cost of owning/maintaining a 914. If you are patient, it can be done on a budget.

This thread really needs to go away. Every time I see it I close my eyes and tell myself I have only put $10 into my car... I really don;t want to know as I know the real number is way up there.
Almost 400 votes as of this post. Interesting to see where folks are at or think they are at $$$ wise with thier 914's. I guessed before I voted that most would fall right around $10k or so because there is still such a greater amount of 4cyl cars out there than 6's. Regardless, our numbers continue to dwindle each year and this "money into your 914" will continue to rise each year as well as less parts are made or NOS parts become NLA even in peoples personal stash. It would be cool to see this thread started fresh once a year.
I figure I'm in the low 10k range atm. That # will be going up shortly with my new turbo plum, fenders, rims, rockers, seats and whatnots.
~$2000 and hundreds of hours of labor. Maybe not worth the parts that I've put into it. Still pisses oil on the exhaust and the garage floor.
That's the one that I had... Momo 230... but it is for a 914-6 or early 911. The splines are the same, but the cancelling ring and mounting depth are different than my car (a '71 914-4). I think I have a solution... I gave my adapter to someone that is installing an early 911 column, and in exchange, I will receive a '74 column with a Momo adapter
From what I've been able to tell, Momo did make an adapter for the early 914-4, but it was a race-only part (non-collapsible hub) and has been long discontinued.
I've got a bit more than $35 in my car now... unfortunately, most of the money that I've spent so far has gone to people that appear to have ripped me off. I did get a good deal on a 2.0 core and a 78mm crank though
I'm about to throw $1300 at flares and sheetmetal for the iron moths.
$1300 so far, but as can be seen below, I have a long way to go. I have that feeling of looking down the precipice, the moment after you jumped.
lovely...
nice car, too.
As for me, Brad Penn Oil 13qts of it every 3,000 miles, I could use a better holding clutch disc, maybe a dual boost controller, a bigger stronger transmission, axles, cv's ect. ect ect.
Let me know if i need or am forgetting anything else....

add 2k to whatever I posted before... and I still need a paint job.
One day someone asked me about what such and such I had on Papa Smurf. I couldn't remember off the top of my head, so I grabbed the folder of receipts and started looking. I specifically DID NOT look at any of the totals at the bottom, but my peripheral vision picked up every one, and my brain became a supercomputer adding machine and quickly added everything up. Luckily, halfway through the pile, and $45,000 later...I found what I was looking for...
I bought my race car from the owner who built and raced the car since it was a puppy about 15 years ago.
He sent me this box a couple months back, EVERY reciept for the car.
The car was raced, and constantly changed and improved, the box just reflects what the PO/builder put into the car over time.
I haven't added the reciepts up, but I'm guessing North of 250G's

Love to see some pics of your car Puff
I must admit I get a little queezy feeling in my stomach everytime I see this thread come up and think about how much I have in mine At least I get to enjoy every dollar spent on this car
I just got wondering... and I'm in to my car for ~$3600 so far. It sure doesn't look like it
I have to guesstimate about $4ooo. total so far just in parts. I should say that Conedodger saved me some $$ on a straight front deck that kept me out of trouble with the wife! Close to $5oo. in tools, and so far about 100 hours of work. Long way to go!!

...Well, as I look through my build sheet...
I have invested about...holy crap !
I have spent about 8200 in parts, and expect to spend another 900.00 on up and coming parts, and I can only estimate my labor at standard rate, (which is not added in).
I have some welding left and preparation for the paint and body, which I haven't started yet. I estimate another 2k there and another 2k on the engine and wiring.
I guess that will place me at 14k total at the turn of the new year, and it is still on jack stands. I am waiting for the cooler weather to finish my welding and sanding.
Hopefully by mid-January, it will finally be on it's wheels, and I can take some photos of it. My daughter was 9 when I started this trek, and now she's 18 and graduating this year. When she was 12, she stated that I would finished it just in time for her to drive it...as it turns out, she was correct.
I know for a fact that I am well north of 80K on just my car alone. 26 years of 914 ownership means that the $500.00 I paid for the car was the cheapest thing I ever bought for a 914.
The paint and body work alone was 12K, not including the cost of the flares and the replacement panels.
Frankly, I really don't WANT to know how much. It's like eating a steak. I love steak, but I don't want to know how it gets from the cow to my table.
All In 1994-95 dollars so seems a bit skewed by todays values:
74- 2.0 litre with the Engine requiring work: 700.00
-- Engine rebuild and reinstall at local Porsche dealer: 2800.00
-- Four Fuchs refinished at Al Reed : 600.00
--New windshield NOS Porsche 900.00 installed after repaint
--Factory duplicate repaint on rust free body...no Hell Hole issues. 3,000.00
-- Four NOS Campagnolo rims found on Ebay : 900.00
-- Eight new tires : 1,000.00
Total:
9900.00
Total of smiles and Reward of self worth : Priceless
especially after winning the first 5 car shows in my class and bringing home the trophies. Even more for my first People's choice and combined First place at the very first show......5
months after completion.
Have owned Papa Smurf for 18 years now.
If I look at the BIG chunks off the top of my head (not looking at the 3 inch thick receipt folder:
Car: $2000
2.4/4 engine: $8000
2.4/4 rebuild: $4000
Body kit/damage repair:$20,000
2.2/6 engine: $10,000
Suspension upgrade: $10,000
2.2/6 rebuild: $3000
2.2/6 rebuild: $5000
and who knows how many more times.....
3.4 engine, install, limited slip, etc: $19,000
This does not include roll cage, seats, 2 sets of wheels, brake upgrades, paint work, 3 transmissions and all the thousands and thousands we've spent on all the little stuff, general maintenance, etc.
THEN, there's Huey...
Between the two of them somewhere around $90 grand. Plus $83.68 in Dave's car.
I can't believe I didn't respond to this thread when it started...
$8,600 from the excellent PO for a mostly finished 2.7L conversion. When I picked it up in San Francisco he told me I had to take the "other stuff" too. Turns out there was another 1970 2L-T engine with carbs, the original 6 stub axles to complete the rear suspension, a spare FG rear trunk lid with a spoiler already built into it and painted, and a cornucopia of other 914 parts. There was a party in my garage in Pacifica. I have to mention that when you come home with a Porsche and the wife's 300ZX gets relegated to the driveway there is a price. But who knew that after 33 years of bachelorhood, buying a car is one of those things you're supposed to "run by the wife".
Then a 993 engine in 1998 because a good friend had it and he REALLY wanted the 2.7 for his track car.
We (my car Penelope and I) have a ritual...
When I just have to improve something I take a sketchpad, a glass of wine or a wee dram, and I park myself in front of whatever 914 real-estate needs some attention. Then I sits and sips and thinks.. there is occasionally a time limit on this phase but usually not. Eventually work happens.
My Cabernet-colored glasses tell me that surely I haven't spent too much money on her yet...
You can't put a price on love!
My 76 finished at $4200, My 73 (rebuilt & running) is at $2400 but still needs brakes, shocks, upper/lower dash pad, carpet, rear trunk pan and re-keyed.
Initial 914 purchase price = $$$.$$
Upgrades and improvements = $$$$$$$
The WTF look on the face of the driver of the brand new GT3 as you turn inside
of him in the corner -
PRICELESS!!!!!
Here I am today with everything apart, again, moaning because I just found cracks in the crank journals & feeling like it's going to cost a lot to get another one, then I came across this thread & it makes me feel sooo GOOD! Like, I'm just at the very beginning of this money pit....It's great!
It has come a long way since its original car payment of $89.00 a month, but I've lost track of materials and labor!
After adding up the receipts, how many have increased the value of their cars with their insurance? With the 3.0 upgrade, 5 lug upgrade, big brakes,. Front oil cooler, body work to roll the rears for 7s, along with purchase, and 100 little things, we are talking $32k. got an offer of $30k on it in Dec, so i'm not feeling too bad about the moola spent. Have agreed value classic car insurance of $30k
I'm still new to this 914 world and included the purchase price, 5-7k for me
pretty sure i got a good deal.
I would venture to guess around $3500 if you count both times I bought the car. Maybe $5000 if you count the 3 years of storage.
Just getting started...$7k for the car. $2k at AA, $2k at recycler, $1K labor (so far), $2,500 for paint labor, $1k for paint/supplies, $2k engine rebuild (est.), $1k media blast, $1k misc.
about $20k for a $10k car.
I actually kept virtually every receipt since the day I purchased the $900.00 roller. I'm right at 30K but it's the last project car for me so I'm OK with that.
Into 914's in general 35 years, whats that worth
I'm not real good at keeping receipts or records, but after almost two years of ownership, my $6,500 car has now over 10k into it,...probably closer to 12. Replacing the engine sure jacks up the number.
But it's the most fun car I've ever owned, including an E type and a 911
And you can't beat the community
$1500 for both cars. One already pro body shop rust removed and painted as part of initial $1500 purchase price. $365 clutch kit. $40 for new pair of halogen Headlamps. Just under $2k and no big dollar items left to purchase. I might pick up a cylinder/piston kit for the 72's original 1.7l while I try out the 76's 2.0l in the 72 for now. Then when I get into restoring the 76...the price will start to jump a bit.
An arm and both legs....whoops--another arm and now it's up to my MMMMUUMPHHH...
looking at the pole, the 20 people that said 0-1000 are either lying, kidding themselves, or they just got started.
Would be tough to figure that out since I've had the same car for nearly 42 years!! My other 914 which I've known of for almost 40 years I've owned for about 10, and as I trying to finish up its restoration, I definitely don't want to add that up!!!
I've got two grown "boys" and with two of them, they won't have to fight over one car, only who gets which one. And I hope they're not in a hurry, because I don't plan on surrending them anytime soon!!
Considering the three rust bubbles on the driver's targa bar and the recently found rust bubbles below the windshield frame and a bad repaint by the PO on the rear trunk, I believe will now be about $1500 more than the previous ridiculous amount. After that I will get to 'rust free' until the next bubble appears.
I have no idea since I have owned it 33 years as of tomorrow. I am not sure I really want to know? It is one of the oldest things I own besides some old guns and baseball gloves. If I had to guess I would say 14 to 20K about half of where it will be when I am satified with it.
