914World.com _ 914World Garage _ I need to paint my front bumper

Posted by: vintage914racer Apr 16 2006, 08:07 PM

Attached ImageMy front bumper has taken a beating over the years its spent on the track. I want to freshen it up for this season, but do not think I could ever match the paint on the car. I was thinking either just getting it painted all black (probably the easiest solution), or I've also considered some type of two tone combination like some of the GTs had. Any recommendations?

The guy at the paint store up the street says he can match any
color.....non metallic. I like your color scheme. It would be a shame to fuch it up.

I wouldn't mind keeping it the same, but at the same time I question the liklihood of it being matched

Posted by: vintage914racer Apr 18 2006, 08:05 AM

Any other recommendations?

Silver (metallic, but not "chrome", like a porsche silver).

That orange is close enough, how about "Gulf" blue front and rear? smoke.gif

sure is a pretty car.
since your not blending a panel and there is a panel break between the bumper and the fender.... you should be able to go orange again.

can you tell us more about your car.
weight, drive train, and amount of fiberglass body panels?

The problem is that I do not know the original color of the car, which might make it tough when I bring it to my painter.

The car is a 71 914 that has been a racecar since 1973. It ran a long life in SCCA production racing before it retired to vintage events. The car currently has a 2.0l 6 cylinder and moves along pretty well. The only body panels that are not fiberglass are the doors and the engine cover.

I vintage race the car a few times throughout the summer, primarily at Road America and Brainerd International Raceway (formerly Donnybrooke).

Most Dupont paint suppliers have an 'optical tool' they place on your car to exactly match the paint. Pretty cool.

Vintage,
Opinions and suggestions? I'll give you opinions and suggestions.

Like you thot, "GT" style.....1/2 Black, the other 1/2 Yellow. If you're good w/ a rattle can, buy several extra so you can "freshen" it up through the season. Also, with those colors, you won't have to fret about a match with the sheetmetal.
