914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Single center windshield wiper

Posted by: neo914-6 Apr 17 2006, 01:03 AM

My initial plans were to use the wiper from a Mercedes W124 /300E (shown on the left) because it has a nice cam action for full windshield coverage. This however would require a large slot for the rotating cam or redesigning the whole front cowl or lid.

I will instead use the late 80's Scirocco wiper (shown on the right) in a centered 914 wiper mount...

Why? Because it's a "racy" European feature and will simplify the front even further...

Cool dood. I looked over me mum's 500, and thought about how cool that would be.

I also thought about what it'd take to use the upper cowl, and hood tunnel from a 911, to get the fresh air intake feeding from the front, instead of the stock leaf strainer.

I used a small electric wiper from West Marine that is intended for a boat and it works great. Very light, you can park it left or right and it worked on the race car well over 120MPH in the rain.

With the vents filled I was going to use the boxster third tail lamp recess welded into the hood but now have the CF hood. I'll likely have hidden air vents into the fender area...

Here's all I found:

CVC 26706(cool.gif

Determine condition of windshield wiper blades. Check operation, however do not operate on dry glass.

Less than two blades or if designed for only one, does not wipe area designed by manufacturer.

I'm the manufacturer happy11.gif

This is not an uncommon conversion in the Euro tuning community plus my car is already registered so a full inspection will be unlikely...

I think the 914 windshield is too rectangular to get a monowiper to make a good sweep but your idea of using a MB unit sounds better.

I did a http://www.icbm.org/erkson/personal/mycars/bonrath_install/index.htm on my Jetta:

I parked it on the driver side. True 180ยบ sweep, pillar-to-pillar!

For my 914 I want to park the wipers on the passenger side -- I can't tell you how much it bugs me that when I would park the wipers they would 9 times out of 10 flick some water in my viewing path!

I'd prefer the Benz wiper but the work on the cowl area will be extensive and difficult to develop the transitions. For example the front lid "should" be extended and flared up with a recess for the wiper. The shape below the windshield should follow the same angle and curve. I thought of cutting up a Benz hood just for this purpose but then it would require a new hinge, seals, etc. I want to use the CF lid so it's a parting line I don't want to change.

I acquire as many parts as I can to visualize them working as a whole. Every change affects the adjacent parts in some way...

Clay, that song's tune is a rip off of Queen's "under pressure". I didn't know you liked vintage rap... poke.gif
