914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Weekend Recap Part II

Posted by: drewvw Apr 23 2006, 09:55 AM

Replaced fuel lines/filter and fuel pump mounts under the tank, was PSYCHED to find that it looks like I have steel lines going thru my tunnel already! Car was running a little bit different (slight racing at idle) after I put it back in...what's changed? do I need to adjust the fuel pressure or something?

Also hope to mud the wall I built last weekend and start the painting for one of the bedrooms...

Lets hear about all the good stuff thats getting done this weekend.

Rebuilt an MSA 1000 still restoring files to it, after that I have to code a script to duplicate all the data onto a new NAS, and then maybe I will get out and build a gauge. Put the clutch nuts I bought last weekend on, etc....... Nothing on the 914 yet except dream about her.

Days like today I wish I sold peanuts at a ball field, instead of being in the IT field. Right now I am just sittin here watching the tape wheels go round and round, I really love to watch them roll.

I got hit with mandatory Saturday and Sunday work. dry.gif

I don't want to burst your bubble, but the first 5-6 inches of the factory fuel line under the tank is steel, then it turns into plastic in the tunnel. popcorn[1].gif

Watched as Aaron and Clayton (twystd1) sacrificed their lower backs hoisting the greasy lump, ahem pristine 69T 2.0, into the back of Aaron's truck. Took the fifty bucks from Aaron and bought beer. (Anybody thirsty? Come one over and help reassemble my 914.)

Installed the engine tin seal in the engine compartment of my 74, hoping like hell it's not upside-down.

Installed and wired the taillights.

Glued in 1/8" foam and then vinyl on the flat section of the dash. For the 5th time. Finally, I think it's good enough to stay. (By the way, use closed-cell foam for this. If you use standard open-cell foam, the foam will get permanently compressed wherever you touch it.)

Installed the dash. Wiped everything down with lacquer thinner to remove the traces of Wurth spray adhesive. Realized that lacquer thinner turns 30 year old dash material from black to gray. Added "Black Vinyl Dye" to the Purchase List.

Wasted way too much time reading this forum instead of working on the 914.

I picked up a nice front chrome bumper from a '71!

Had bonus rubber strip on top in great shape!

And I ordered some parts from Germany.

I was going to start tearing down the 1.7 I got from Tony AKAVW, but I needed to make room in the garage. I wound up cleaning the garage and throwing a bunch of crap out. So nothing productive accomplished yet.

Posted by: Brando Apr 23 2006, 08:29 PM

Accomplished nothing on the 914.

Fixed the headlights on my 944 (both up AND down action).

Helped clayton destroy a car (I am the windshield exper -- at breaking them).

Chilled with Robert21 and Elliott Cannon before they left to take naps.

Had some Pizza with Skliney and Claytonnovich.

Can't forget the resident German (Thomas) and Linda showed up biggrin.gif

Got my teener back on the road after a fuel pump replacement. Resolved a persistant miss which I think was fouled plugs. Then I cancelled the rest of the to do list for some driving. Ended up here. Ignore the blue skies and sunshine, it always rains in Seattle.

God, I love driving that car! driving.gif

The arrow looks right in terms of matching the gas flow into the pump, and I did a brief inspection of the lines to make sure they weren't kinked, but I will check again...

I worked on both of my PCars this weekend. Saturday AM I started strong and went to the local Porsche Junk Yard (20th street auto) and looked for 944 and 914 stuff. Came away mostly empty handed except for a Vitaloni mirror.

914
Rotary Polished the paint trying to make it look respectable.
Painted some old Vitaloni mirrors (again trying to make it look respectable)
Installed some missing FI pieces.
Found out the exhaust won't work with a hanger, thats pr'olly why its missing.
Fixed a throttle cable problem, the dohicky that snaps onto the pedal liked to pop off.

944S2 (suffered a broken timing belt a while back and she is on a slow road to recovery)
Got this mess of belts and pulleys installed and tensioned. This was a tricky procedure, because everything has to be timed and sync'd just right. (Cams/Crank/Balance-Shafts) There are at least 2 more pulleys/idlers you can't see in that pic. Crazy thing about these cars, they use the junkiest belts you can get and require you to tension them with a $600 tool! F!ing Porsche, too smart for their own good.

This was the first real post-winter weekend here at 7,000 feet! Bright, sunny and temps Saturday in the low 60's. Windy, but not too bad. Windier & colder today, but not so bad to stop me!

1. Reassembled the wiper wiring under the dash/steering column. Wipers still didn't work. Changed the left round relay on top of the fuse box - I've got wipers again! WooHoo! That was so fast I could go on to lots of other little things that are not of great consequence, but feel really good when they are done.
2. Reinstalled lower dash
3. Reset engine timing
4. Vacuumed the interior and the engine compartment to get rid of all the leaves & pine needles from the winter
5. Washed & waxed the 914, washed the Jetta
6. Adjusted the valves
7. Fixed the air dam on the Jetta
8. Ordered my flat-towing bar so the 914 can come along to the West Coast Classic in Portland
9. Arranged for replacing windshields this week in the Honda & Eurovan
10. Adjusted the targa-top front clips
11. Missed the game this afternoon, but the Suns beat the Lakers in Game 1!

A very good weekend! I'm ready for the Route 66 Classic. The 914 sure looks great with a coat of wax!

Ray,
I think you should put all of this in your own thread.
Others may think you are showing off.

Nice work!

I put in an injector Friday night and drove to Hershey for the weekend and took over Dr. Evil's couch for a few days.

..what could I say...very productive weekend. They don't come often.

I finished cleaning the Type-IV stuff out of the engine bay. No more engine tin surround. I ground down the remaining spot welds and cleaned up the remaining paint. The bare steel that is left has been treated with Jasco Metal Etch and is ready for paint. I ordered two quarts of Zero Rust for the engine bay. Black as a base coat and grey as a top. Now the question is spray or brush on?
