914World.com _ 914World Garage _ My cable shifter is done!

Posted by: bondo May 9 2006, 02:59 PM

Ok, my long awaited cable shifter is done. It is on a 901 sideshift. My main motivation for doing it is to make upgrading to a 930 trans easier down the road. My cable friction issue was solved with a couple drops of oil on the seals that keep dirt out of the cables (boy do I feel silly).

Here's the pics:

That is a work of art.

It gives me too many ideas right now. idea.gif

Posted by: bondo May 9 2006, 03:10 PM

Hehe, thanks guys. This took way too long to make to put into production.. It's also untested. smile.gif

Tell ya what, I'll trade it for a rebuilt 930 trans with flipped R&P, with clutch and flywheel needed to fit it to an LT1. lol2.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil May 9 2006, 03:15 PM

For a prototype it is quite good. I cant wait to see the test results. What did you get the shifter out of?

Posted by: nine14cats May 9 2006, 03:17 PM

Beautiful Work! clap56.gif

I'll give you a flipped R&P 915 box for R&D if I can have it back when you're done....I'll even pay money for the solution!

I'm not kidding...I've got a flipped 915 sitting on the shelf. I want to use it so bad in my teeners buy I don't want to go for the WEVO cost at the moment...

Can you help me out.?... drunk.gif piratenanner.gif

I'm with Bill on this one, I'll chip in to develop a similarly bitchin solution for the 915.

Awsome looking parts.

Man I really am amazed on the craftsmenship of that piece! WOW. what did you use to make it! It looks like a production piece.

Eric

Posted by: TonyAKAVW May 9 2006, 06:03 PM

I have seen parts of this cable shifter in person and it is more impressive than the pictures. Not only is it very nice looking, the pieces have the mass that make it feel as though it will outlast the transmission. Also notice that his transmission is powder coated black....

-Tony

Posted by: nocones May 9 2006, 06:40 PM

Tony,
I did notice the transmission. (what kinda sick man powdercoats a transmission? biggrin.gif )
I really like this solution. By far the best looking cable-shift I've seen. Now, does it work as well as it looks?!?

Posted by: dwillouby May 9 2006, 06:41 PM

I want one too! That set up would motivate me to go ahead and do a 930.

Very nice work.

David

Posted by: bondo May 9 2006, 06:56 PM

Wow, I'm a little stunned at the response. I really appreciate it!

I never intended to go into the cable shifter biz, but I also never realized there would be so much interest.

If I were to try and produce something like this, I would have to buy my own mill and lathe.. I don't think my work would like me using their tools to run a business. smile.gif

I'm not sure I could compete with Wevo.. I don't even know what an "internal gateshift" is, but I keep reading about it. I don't know 915s at all, and I would have to get to know them well before I could do something like this. There would be a real possibility that I could do all this work and end up with a product that costs just as much as the Wevo setup, but doesn't work as well.

Yes, I could have gone with a shift rod, but I wanted complete freedom of engine/trans placement, and I want to get it all as low as possible. I also wanted to be able to upgrade to a stronger trans without too much trouble. I'd probably be happy with a 915, but 915s geared for a V8 are hard to come by.

The top of the shifter is out of an 88 Celica, the bottom (the base and part that holds the cables) is custom. I chose this shifter because it was center sprung, but I ended up modifying it to only be sprung away from reverse (kinda like the stock 914 shifter).

Feel free to pipe up if I missed any questions.

Bottom line: Don't rule me out as a 915 cable shifter producer, but also don't expect anything soon. Thanks for the offer to loan me an R&D 915, but right now I'm already knee deep in projects. It would be a couple years before I would get time for such an undertaking. Also, don't start a business using my design or the karma gods will eat you. smile.gif

I found myself looking at your video for the last ten minutes. My wife just came home from work and snapped me out of my trance. That is a very nicely engineered and executed cable shift system. VERY NICE INDEED. I just finished my cable shift system and can understand how difficult it can be to get perfect. Looks like your system is the cleanest design yet. Be proud of yourself...you've earned it!

Hey Bondo,

I've been kicking around the idea of getting out of my v8 project for a while. I have in my possession an 87 930 box shortened, flipped, 80% factory LSD, electronic speedo sensor installed. Completely rebuilt with 0 miles.

Core had 50,000 miles when rebuilt/modified by Renegade hybrids. Need R&D? It's not powder coated though. . . might not make the cut for your project tongue.gif

Greetings LT1 Brother !!

Pretty awesome job on that shifter set-up !
Looking forward to seeing the finished V8 car after this introduction and design.

Royce, my car is currently seeing some easy street miles and hopefully close to
running some autocross and solo 1 (time trails). After a little harder driving I
will then get to sort out more of the overall build up of the car. The LT1 even
with a carb. has lots of low end torque and the weight distribution makes for
an excellent hook-up when the throttle gets hammered. Quite fun and quick
for a stock 300HP V8.

BTW has anyone other than myself considered or used a Boxster Cable Shifter.
The design and mechanism will adopt easily to any tail shifter rod; and would
be a very good fit in a 914. (some plastic parts and not a nice looking as the one
Royce has fabricated; but for us poor and simple guys it might just do a good job)

Happy Motoring Guys

Allan

The guy above me nailed it. The Boxster setup on the 2.5 and 2.7 cars could be adapted. The "hockey stick" coming out of the Boxster trans is the same size as the 915 and 930 hockey stick.

Great Job Royce!. It looks awesome.

Info:

The 915 and 930 both have different requirements when it comes to movements for gear selection. This means two solutions.. not one. He carefully measured/studied the requirements for the 901/914 box. He would have to completely start over with the 915 and the 930.

Royce,

did you look at the Boxster shifter setup? It is much cleaner appearing and very easy to mount in the 914 with min effort.

B

Posted by: tat2dphreak May 17 2006, 08:06 AM

that looks awesome! so are you going to produce these as a kit? this has come up several times in the past that people have asked for cable shift kits...

Posted by: bondo May 17 2006, 03:21 PM

I didn't use a boxster shifter because I'm a CSOB. The shifter I used cost $10, plus probably $5 of steel for the base. I also wasn't going for a clean appearance, but more of a mechanical transparency appearance. The shifter came with a cover for the pivoty bits but I left it off. I love to be able to see how things work while they're working.

I haven't even looked at the boxster shifter, but if I were to do a kit I would probably look for a shifter that was already set up for mid engine use. How long are boxster cables? I spent $150 on the cables, so if the cables are the right length and cheaper, it might be the way to go.

Any kit I'd make would be at least 2 years away, so don't hold your breath. Too much going on right now. The one I just made is still a year away from testing, because the car it's going into is still in pieces.

It sounds like the boxster setup is a good fit for 915s and 930s, so I may just focus on sideshift 901s since they're so unique and nothing existing adapts to them (that I know of).

I bought a late-model cable shifter (this was out of a Boxter, but they are all the same, they wanted to charge extra for the knob so I took the messed up one for free) and the cable assy from a junkyard in LA. Turns out the cables were too short for my 930 setup. Going directly to the side of the trans, like the sideshift 901, they might be long enough. They have funky ends on them... I can't recall if they are easily removable or not - I think they were, so maybe could replace with some metric rod ends.

I ended up using McMaster-Carr 5/16" push/pull cables at the length I needed. I used 5/16" because the 5/16" quick disconnect fits over the shifter "ball" perfectly.

I would like to keep this thread active. I am going to need a cable shifter. I have one on a 5spd fiero to study but it's one of my drivers. How much does a boxter shifter from a pick an pull usually go for? The celica looked like it might be better quality though. I don't have many good choices around where I live. But I sure have lots of room and it's nice and quite but really hot right now.

I have an MR2 shifter and I don't like it a while lot. Can't say about the celica or Boxster shifters, but the Porsche shifters seem to be nice, although they are almost entirely made of plastic. But they don't rely on a ball which should result in less slop.
