For one thing coilovers are typically less than half the cost of torsion bars and available in a much wider range of spring rates.

does the chassis need to be strengthened or tied into the cage when you convert to front coilovers? Also, the 914 shock towers seem pretty narrow compared to the 911 shock towers, might get in the way of camber adjustments, etc.

Yea, ya need to reinforce the shock towers, because with the torsion bar suspension, not a lot of pressure is put on the top strut mounts.(maybe worded wrong, but you have to strengthen the mounts) Look at TonyC's web page and see what he did to a 914-8 with coil-over fronts, very impressive
