914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Need help - Starter wiring

Posted by: KaptKaos May 20 2006, 01:14 PM

Ok, the PO put in a hot start relay down by the starter. At least that's what I've been told it is.

It has worked just fine, no problems.

I recently pulled my starter becuase it was having problems. In pulling out the starter I "think" i pulled some cables out of the block that connects to the relay.

Coming off or thru the tin, I have three wires; A black and a red, both with circular connectors. These go to the post on the starter. No problem. The other wire is actually 3 wires, all brown casing. Once goes into the relay. The other two have an odd termination on the end.

I have attached pix to show some of what I am seeing. Camera takes crappy pix upclose, so I apologize.

The relay and the block where everything connects.

The funky looking terminations. These are the 2 wires I have no idea where they go.

I am looking for help to fix or remove this setup.

Thanks in advance.

If those 2 wires are long enough to reach the backup light switch, aft and below the starter, then that's what they are. The Cap'n

Hmmm...

In looking at the relay, I couldn't figure out WTF those would go. They are fairly long too.

Thanks Cap'n.

Just got back out under there. There is nothing that those 2 wires could reach. I doubt that they having anything to do with the reverse lights.

Ok, staring over on this. I have 5 wires back there. 2 come through the tin right by the starter, and the other three are all jacketed together and run along the tin, but seem to come from the passenger side.

The 2 that come through the tin have round connectors and were previously connected to the post on the starter.

The three that come in the same jacket are all brown. One of them goes into the relay supplied by the DAPO, the other two have those funky terminations on them (they are twisted on).

From the relay, there is a slide on connector that goes to the other side of the starter. FYI, I am using the hi-torque mini-starter from ebay.

I'd be happy just to get this back to stock and remove the hot start relay from the DAPO.

Any help would be appreciated. I need to get this bugger running tomorrow.

Thanks,
Joe

Where did they go?

Posted by: KaptKaos May 20 2006, 10:15 PM

I have a '73 with a sideshift.

On the tranmission, drivers side, fore and above the cover to the shifter, there is a plastic "nut" with two holes that the bullet connector pop right into. The "nut" is white on my car.

My biggest worry was that I was going to improperly connect something. Since I have that extra relay down there, I couldn't recall how it all went together.
