If you had your pick of any non-porsche vintage car (within reason $$) what would it be.
I think I'm going with a.....late 50's AC Ace
Attached image(s)
Any old Bug, Ghia or Bus.
No question...
D-Type Jag...Looks amazing on the racetrack and perfect for the Goodwood Revival!
Attached image(s)
if i didnt have a teener.....
it would be a lotus europa
Either of these...
Attached image(s)
one - who can pick just one?
Maybe a Swallow Doretti...
Attached image(s)
I like the D- type jag, but since he said "within reason" I vote for this beauty!
with Mark
I've been looking for one of those in the "reasonable" price range for a few years now.
But... ultimatley I agree with RacerGirl... why pick just one.
I WANT THEM ALL
Not so vintage, but 1986 Ford/Cosworth Sierra RS. Mmmnnnn, tasty.
Real vintage? Austin-Healey or GT40 Mk I
pete
An Alfa GTV.
Attached image(s)
I certainly can't pick just one.
Favorite car I'd never actually own: original Lotus Elite
(too fragile, too hard to repair properly)
Favorite car I'll never have enough money to own: Ferrari 250 GTO
Favorite car I may actually have one day: Alpine A110
Favorite car I've actually owned: Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT
ok, if i had to pick, the Cheetah. but my dad won't let me near it
Shelby Cobra! Might not be exactly "within reason", but it's my original dream car. The car that got me interested in cars when I was a young boy.
I am loving the diversity. All are nice choices....
Aaron: there was a Lotus Europa for sale at Lone Pine. $8500. Unfortunately it had a Mazda rotary engine...
Bunch of pictures here:

Not sure if it qualifies, but I love the shape, Birdcage Maserati:
It's a race car though!
Jeff
Bugeye Sprite
TR4
TR250
Ford GT40
Lancia Stratos!
Is that within reason?
Attached image(s)
No dollar limit...
Otherwise...
But I would pull the original drivetrain and put in a late model SR20DET and 5 speed tranny.
easy queston...
easy answer

I like this color better. Want to race?
I like these....
Attached image(s)
within reason: Ghia convertible
otherwise a Pantera
Didn't we do this last week
This is gonna be my next purchase...
In fact I would even buy this particular one if it's still available in 2 years.

wow... a lot of ghia love. I didn't realize I was so lucky!
no chance to point out only 1 car ...

No question...

Hell ya Wolfgang.
BMW 3.0 CSL... one of the best.
I had a 2800CS. The momma to the 3.0.
I have always been partial to small displacement sports GT cars like the Ginetta pictured below
1970 Dodge Charger 440 with a Six Pack
Morgan....
Sunbeam Tiger or a Corvette
I like these too
Lotus Cortina
Attached image(s)
In my dreams: Ford GT40 Mk-I.
Hopefully one day: Ghia convertible.
If my neighbor ever sells it: VW Thing.
Rob, "Guten Morgan"
Saw this last week, I've always like square's but add a 993 power plant and

Ferrari 250GT SWB
Realistically sometime in my life
MGB GT
Attached image(s)
A 1953 Olds 88 (with the rocket 303 and 4 speed) and this particular Model A roadster thats sitting in a barn kinda near my house.b
If I get away from the 914s. I have wanted to do a 1959 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud with modern chevy drivetrain.
David
I'd sell a vital body part for an Iso Rivolta...
Remember the Renault R5 Turbo's? Still an outrageous car even today.
Attached image(s)
Dad had one when I was a little kid.
Attached image(s)
I didn't see one of these posted and they were gods when I was a youngster.
Challenger 426 Hemi, to fast for publication.
Attached image(s)
Quite a few of the mid-late 60's and early 70's concept cars, which the Pantera kinda-sorta fits in.
Drove my brother in-laws brother's Pantera part way back from a restoration shop in Ohio. Ear to ear grin for days afterwards!
Personal fave was Lambo Miura.
...and the new one
Attached image(s)
1978 Dodge Lil Red Express truck - some day........
1977 Pontiac Special edtion Trans Am (Bandit Edition) with the Y82 package

Afffordably, I'd like another crack at an Aztec-7. Sad story of it's demise...http://www.priceofhistoys.com/2006/05/10/wrecked-aztec-7-kitcar/ The Aztec-7 used a Miura windshield.
It was based on a Alfa Romeo Carabo 60's concept car by Bertone.

SLITS and Dan nailed it... GT40 is untouchable as my alternate.
No pics but I've always thought the 1959 Ferrari Testa Rossa with the pontoon fenders and cutouts was pure sex...gt40 mk1...oh HELL yes...as far as that goes I'd like that white lotus from the early pics, not sturdy but boy do those suckers handle....mmmmm
Here's my vote.... Still within "reason"
If I have to go cheap...
Or maybe something like this...
what is that ferrari - a lusso, or a dino?
I like this thread
Top one is a Fiat Dino 246, middle one is an Alfa 2600 Spider and the bottom one is a Fiat Dino 2400 Spider.
Remember, Ferrari built the Dino, but they were sold under Fiat's name. Kind of like our teeners, only the Italian version!
add another one to the list of the pantera GT-5, sooo gorgeous!!!!
ive also been in love with these
or one of these beautiful audis...
i seem to have a weakness for rallye cars
Attached image(s)
OK, now that I'm thinking about it, I'm getting bummed....
Ferrari builds the Dino's, they sold as FIATS! They are worth a small fortune today.
Panterrra puts a Ford Cleveland engine in the car. It's hot and worth a few bucks today.
Porsche puts a VW engine in the 914. You can buy one today for the same price as when it was new...
Must be an Italian thing...
My non-Porsche vintage pick would be a VW type 3 ghia. So shoot me, I love the smell of an air cooled engine, and am attracted to odd cars. I had a Variant that was a blast to drive.
There are so many that I lust for but I would Like to have the one that got away that I owned back in 63. It was a AC Aceca Bristol with a stage 2 motor. sold it for $3600 because it would not haul my four kids. DAMN
Bernie
Sunbeam Tiger, or if I hit the lottery, Ferarri Dino or T/R.
Being somewhat realistic here, I'd take a 2002 Tii if I could n't have my 914.
I also like a VW Type III notchback. British and Jap sports cars do nothing for me.
Attached image(s)
1973 BMW 2002 TII Fast Back.
No question.
Attached image(s)
for non-racing, 1953 Studebaker StarLiner
for vintage racing, TR-3
Okay, within reason.
And then not so within reason. How about a nice classic Avro Arrow.
Oh, I don't know, I could go on and on
Attached image(s)
I agree with Gustl on the Dino question. The Dino 206/246 was a Ferrari, sold as a Dino. The FIAT Dino coupe was a FIAT (built and sold by), only the engine was a Ferrari design, essentially the same as the one in the 246. I note that the original 308 was also a Dino, but they eventually dropped the whole Dino idea, rebadged the 308 as a Ferrari, and thus the whole 308/328/348/355/360 line of Ferrari V8s was born.
Now that FIAT owns the entire Italian auto industry, the question is rather moot.
Tobra, the E-type is sexy-looking, but the car is actually complete crap. This is doubly true of the later V12 cars. Handling is rather ponderous, and working on the car is a hideous experience. Anyone who complains about Porsche prices would be gob-smacked by Jag prices.
I'd have to go back to my roots - Dodge man... '71 Hemi cuda (but this one went for $4.1M)
Reasonable $ be damned........I want one of these. I remember woking in my uncle's gas station in the late 50's when one stopped for a tank of "ethyl". Never forget the sight of the driver's door opening and the guy climbing out. The sound as he drove away was music. Made my '50 Ford coupe seem primitive. Given my $2.00 hour wage the SL was a bit out of reach. Even further out of reach today!

favorite non-porsche car that is in roughly the same price group...

Any one of many cars from this St. Louis showplace:
http://www.fastlanecars.com/
The prices for these cars do not seem unrealistic.
ghia 'vert, late 60s vette, shelby cobra, any 911
Attached image(s)
http://www.furyous.org/about.html I saw one of these at Carlisle last weekend. The example I saw had a Hayabusa engine/tranny, resulting in a curb weight of just 960 pounds. There aren't too many cars that can make a 914 look bloated!
Oops... just checked the thread title and it clearly says "vintage." The Fury is still in production. OK, for "vintage" it's gotta be a chrome bumper ('68-'72) Stingray convertible with a big block and 4-speed.
Attached image(s)
like i said - who can pick just one? and yeah this isn't reasonable at all.
Actually my favorites are a 57 Chevy pickup, an 77 Trans Am, a 69 Dodge Charger SS, and a 66 Shelby GT350!
I saw that car at the ralph lauren exhibit....great ride.
The ultimate sports car
Attached image(s)
The Mach 5!
Actually, I think it is a rebodied mustang
I know the E type jags had terrible electrical, Dad had a '72 V-12 car that was a hoot to drive, 70 mph in first. Overboosted power steering, tiny boot, transmission would get hot, top leaked, still a great car.
Did not even think about American Iron, love the wing cars
Attached image(s)
I also like fast trucks. There a a couple of these with 24 liter merlin engines in them. That must be fun!
Attached image(s)
Hummm.....can't decide
Attached image(s)
ditto on the datsun. 67' style chassis and trim. U20 engine with solex carbs.
k
"within reason" Aww, the heck with it - I want one of these...
Attached image(s)
I'll take a Chaparral
or this
That's real easy.
BMW 1600/2002 Voll Cabriolet (preferably with an E30 M3 motor/trans/brakes).
Now money no object?
1957 Ferrari Testarossa
Digging up old threads.....love it.
Here is my first car the GTO (never should have sold this...mine was a conv with tripower...)
My second car the 65 Fastback (Loved that car...I will get one of these...)
My next car...the 850 csi
I would love any one of them.
I suspect my next one will be the 850 csi....just cause everyone needs to own a 12 cylinder car at some point...
Rich

or...I could build this....

One of these sits in my driveway...

It's cool that so many chose a Lotus........me too.
