914World.com _ 914World Garage _ East Coast Cookout 2006

Posted by: Kerrys914 Jun 1 2006, 07:02 AM

jsharp.gif Hey guys/gals we are getting closer to the 3rd ECC (East Coast Cookout). If you are planing on attending please send me an e-mail or post here.

If you did not get the electronic flyer sent out via e-mail a few monts back AND want to go to this event, please e-mail me and I will add you to the e-mail list.

Date: Sept 16, 2006 (Sat)
Location: Virginia (near DC, but not too close biggrin.gif )

As always we are still looking for sponsors to help with the event. If you have a product that you would like to get in front of 30+ East Coast owners.. drop me an e-mail. clap56.gif

Also, shoot me some topics for the tech session you would like to see. I would like to have 2 sessions about an hour each. Topics like..One man engine drop, Type IV engine tune up, brake bleeding, front home alignment, installation of rear lid shocks..etc??

If you want an event shirt please send me an e-mail with the size, cost will be between $15-$20

This year we expect to have 20+ cars and another garage session, so send me some things you would like to see us dig into?

Cheers and see you this summer.. jsharp.gif

You know I'll be there, perhaps with some friends and family in tow! If all goes to plan my garage will be done by then and I'll have time to tinker (put on those parts I've had sitting around for years) before the meet!

Does the engine drop mean just dropping, or dropping and reinstalling? biggrin.gif

Kerry,

Do you think it might be a Good Idea to get this thread "nailed"?

Posted by: Leo Imperial Jun 1 2006, 12:22 PM

Is this in Williamsburg?
If it is that is a good distance from DC.
Either way I will try to make it.
Please send me the info.

Posted by: zymurgist Jun 1 2006, 12:24 PM

No, it's where Babydoll lives (Fairfax Station). I think the nearest town is Woodbridge.

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Jun 1 2006, 12:45 PM

Posted by: fitsbain Jun 6 2006, 11:53 AM

I towed it up from around there.

LOL. Babydoll spent MORE than enough time sitting on jackstands over the past year, both with and without the engine and tranny installed. Of course, I have a tail dragger with external oil cooler that needs an engine/tranny drop... I know, I know, move along, there's nothing to see here...

Posted by: JmuRiz Jul 28 2006, 09:32 AM

I don't know man, you sold your car....haha. I'd say come, it'll be fun, and local!
Speaking of selling cars....what are you driving to the even Kerry, inquiring minds what to know.
I'll probably be there with my friends/family and the newest ride (along with the 914)...if that's cool.

Also, this will give me a reason to really get crackin on finishing the garage, so I can show it off to anyone interested (see the blog)!

OT: You mod that at all, I have recently put some on mine (bored out MAF, engine and tip-chip) and they did wonders for power and MPG.

Is it clutch slippage or does it just need to be adjusted? Can you still engage 1st and reverse w/o grinding. Just throwing the idea out there. Although a clutch replacement demo would be sweet!

Hey Kerry,

Where's the location your planning on having ECC?
Sounds like it might be right around my neighborhood!??
Let me know if I can help with anything....

I'm going to bring (donate) a couple of specialty tools that you can raffle
off or whatever. Planning on at least a clutch installation guide spline (made from an actual tranny spline and a tranny main shaft holding lever (made from a used tranny gear). I'll PM you with pics as soon as I finish fabrication.

Are you makin' up ECC 2006 'T-shirts? Pls. hold 2 for me if you are. 1-XL and 1-Medium.

It needs a clutch cable and it shifts like crap. I think I need a proper 915 shift tube and I haven't felt like doing an engine drop to install it. With the Corvette, everything works the way it's supposed to.

But you never know... if the weather is cool enough to make me not want to drive an open car, I could still drive the 911.

Posted by: type47 Aug 16 2006, 07:35 AM

Babydoll is finished... and so am I. I have no plans to wrench on any Porsche, especially with this perfect driving weather and a Corvette with no top. Plus, Corvettes at Carlisle is coming up on the last weekend in August and I've got to save my pennies for more goodies.

I would consider having a wrench session for the engine drop if there are any takers, sometime after the ECC. But right now I don't even want to look at that car.

did you get info about this? if not, what i know of the 2 that i attended is, it's a gathering to be held in northern virginia, south of washington DC. if your car is not finished, OK, come anyway. bring a food dish, tools to help the Dr do a tranny (not what you're thinking...), have fun. last year there were ~25 cars. put this on the calendar, you know you'll let is slide by if you don't. maybe others will contact you for a caravan. i think there are some coming from the baltimore area.

Posted by: RS22b Aug 20 2006, 10:56 AM

I didnt recieve any info on the event. Prob bc i havent been on here in awhile.

I will more than likely have my car done for the event. I just had a 2.3 built motor put in it along with a bunch of other new goodies. Still some to be done on the car before im completely satisfied with the car.

They fired up the motor last week and are just taking care of some susp and brake issues for me. Too many other cars i deal with to have the time really to do the work myself on the car.

Posted by: zymurgist Aug 20 2006, 11:03 AM

What's a 2.3? Is that a Type IV?

Posted by: RS22b Aug 20 2006, 01:36 PM

its a 1.8L bored, stroked, cam'd, valved, etc.

I dont remember the exact specs on the motor, but i think they were 96mm pistons and sleeves.

Should put out around 150whp.

Anyone??

17 is a much nicer drive - through essex and all. I'll talk to the wife tonight, but I have an idea that we'll be going up on friday. If not I'll hook up with you on saturday.

Posted by: Kerrys914 Aug 23 2006, 11:08 AM

Also, my wife will have the support car with her and should have room for another person or two, just incase somones wife doesn't want to do the drive up in the 914.

e-mail me. Someone from who has made the trip should post some directions or maps for us who have not taken that route before.

Cheers

Posted by: porsche914blue Aug 23 2006, 11:47 AM

Couple of roads that are a lot of fun coming up from Fredericksburg are;

Joplin Road off of 95 or Route 1 to Dumfries Road. That's a curvy one. I've heard the cops know about it and do patrol it so watch your speed.

Elk Run Road off of Rt 17 northwest of Fredericksburg to Rt 28 is one of my favorite drives. You even get to see Longhorns as there's a Longhorn farm on Elk Run Road. This is definitely the less direct route and would take longer (probably twice as long) than going up Joplin Rd to Dumfries Rd.

Tech Sessions:

- Engine drop (dropping a 1.7L out and installing a 1.8L)
- A look at used clutches (Pressure plate, friction disk, and t-out bearings)
- A look at valves

- Basic Tune-up on a Type IV (maybe a pointless ignition conversion too)

Anyone wishing to help with these please e-mail me. Please note: We have the Tune-up car and the engine drop car piced out.

I'll be there, with my "new" 9014 kit-car (converted with Auto-Atlanta's fiberglass body kit in the early '90s) which badly needs, and is scheduled to be the recipient of the drop demo--on the way to a motor swap--I guess its a a drop-swap. Possibly will require some expert advice, as it has a dying 1.7 with fuel inj, and the donor motor is a 1.8, recently injected but missing the parts, so to be injected using the 1.7 set-up. Come see a rare car (only a few dozen--looks a bit like a '60s 904) get rolling again! --Chris H, Falls Church

I have driven around Fredricksburg several times, but I don't know the area. I am going to be comming down from PA, so I'd really not like to get lost.

Sounds great smile.gif Now we just need the rest of the guys to come down/up smile.gif

So are we not meeting here to drive up from Fredericksburg? confused24.gif

Posted by: Kerrys914 Sep 6 2006, 06:58 AM

Lets meet in Fredericksburg @ 9:30'ish. I was looking at the map and think Rt17 may be a bit out of the way.

What about taking I95 from Fredericksburg to Dumfies rd ( North RT234) and then cross the river on fords rd and follow the river toward the ECC location???

Anyone from DC feel like meeting us as we get off I95??
So far it looks like we have;

hey, i might like to do that! one of the things i enjoyed about the last 2 was the drive there and back. this one is "not far enough away" to get my fix. i'll keep an eye out here for later developments and PM my cell # when time gets closer.

Okay.. Lets meet at "Mc Donalds at 95 and 17" between 9:14 and 9:30 and then head up I95 to the RT234 exit. Should be about an hour or so run from McD's (I think)

Please post here if you are going to meet and drive up with us.

E-mail me at kerrys914@yahoo.com or PM me and I will send you my cell # just incase..

It would be nice if a NOVA person can lead the way. I will have maps but the local touch is allways better driving.gif driving.gif

you might need to reinstall the proportioning valve. ... or experiment with the venting clearance. ... i've also read of going to pads that are less agressive than the fronts to ease lock up.

Much love for Hacker-Pschorr at the house of Ace Mechanic. It's one of the few German beers I've found that doesn't get skunky in the trip across the ocean.

Still assembling the American beer portion... thinking a sampling of local craft brews should fit the bill.

The Benz is down right now. I think when the wiring harness fried it took the alternator with it confused24.gif All I know is that it turns over harder now and it was sudden onset. I went over the schematics last night adn I did rebuild the harness correctly. I do not have much diesel experience so I am learning (in my free time dry.gif ). I may have a fuel issue, who knows. Probably taking the 4runner, but then Noel will have no vehicle for Sat because we are down to one working vehicle.

i'll have a seat you can fill and will PU at Vienna Metro stop. i'm also interested in meeting the kerry herr caravan on their way up from tidewater area so my very tentative plan is to drive down there, planning on 45 minutes to there and arrive when they arrive, to be coordinated more closely, so i'm thinkin' PU at vienna metro in the 9:30-10 time frame, may be adjusted; meeting them may be cancelled for instance if there is no way you can get the vienna, i'd cancel meeting kerry to give you a ride. later, i'll PM my cell # but post here how this sounds...

Looks like we may have 4-6 guys getting together off I95 at Rt 234 (No sure what exit this is or where to meet once we get off the exit).

Plan is to be at the McD's in Fredericksburg, VA between 9:14 and 9:30. We will then head up I95 to the Rt234 exit and meet up with a few guys (maybe ???)

I am driving up from Williamsburg past Richmond to Fredericksburg if anyone one wants to follow me up.

Posted by: Kerrys914 Sep 14 2006, 09:25 AM

Guys here is take at the directions to the ECC (the long way around)

The route:

- I95 to Rt 234 (Exit 152A)

- Head N-West on Rt 234 to Rt 3000 (take a right onto)

- Head N-East on Rt 3000 to “Prince William Parkway” (Take a right onto)

- Head S-E on “Prince William Parkway” to “Yates Ford Road” (Take a left onto)

- Head East on “Yates Ford road” to “Henderson rd” (Take a right onto)

- Head East on “Henderson Rd.” to “Hampton Rd.” (take a right onto)

- Head east on “Hampton Rd. to “Timberidge rd” (Take a left onto) and look for the Pink Flamingos J J

If we head up I95 for another 8 miles to exit 160 we can reduce the total drive by 35-45mins (estimate).

I am not sure how nice the route above is. Maybe the NOVA guys can chime in??? I think the ECC is about 30 mins off I95 if we take exit 160 and has less street changes.

Thoughts??

Posted by: type47 Sep 14 2006, 10:09 AM

the part of the route from Yates Ford Rd on to the final site is made up of rural back-road tree lined windy country roads. actually, be careful on those roads and don't get surprised, like coming over a hill and seeing a stop sign 10 feet away. maybe if you knew the turns and curves you could press it but not the first time.

Correct, the 160 exit (Route 123) is the fast way to get there...but the route you picked is a much more entertaining drive. See you all at the final destination, as I'll be coming from Arlington.

Posted by: Kerrys914 Sep 14 2006, 11:16 AM

So maybe we should do this...

Meet at Fredericksburg (exit 130 - East @ McD's next to Altoona dr.)
We will leave Exit 130 close to 9:30am and head North on I95
We will get off I95 at Exit 160 where we will meet up with a few NOVA guys.
We should arrive exit 160 around 10:00am'ish and leave for the ECC by 10:30

Arrive at the ECC close to 11:00??

How does the above sound?

Please post here if you are planning on going. We need to have a head count so we don't leave someone behind..Because we NEVER leave anyone behind flag.gif driving.gif

Yates Ford is a fun road. Actually one of my stomping grounds. No surprises, it's well marked. There are a couple of 15mph curves but no over-the-hill stop signs. It's 35mph all the way through.

Beware, it's kinda easy to miss the right hand turn from Old Yates Ford onto Henderson. It's right at the apex of a long sweeping left hand curve. It looks like a "T" on the maps but the stop sign actually splits Henderson Road. If you miss the right turn you'll end up on Henderson Road but going the wrong way.

There's also a 3-way stop on Henderson, turn right to head towards Hampton Road.

I may try to meet you guys at the beginning of Yates Ford if I can, around 10:15am or so.

Joel

Posted by: porsche914blue Sep 14 2006, 06:31 PM

This is where the turn off from Old Yates Ford to Henderson is, ignore the curly-ques, they're just for effect.

Okay exit 130 is the exit near the Mc Donalds near the mall excuse me the Town Center on Rt 3 now exit 133 is the one at Rt 17 with the Mc Donalds near the old truck stop. I recommend the one on Rt 17 because it will be easier to get in and out of that one.

drop me, type47, as i will be picking up at vienna metro

i think justin fischer is planning on meeting you, last i read.

yes, yates ford rd and route from there to site would be great to take in a 914, just be cautious, there are some sharp, blind curves. no, there may not be "stop signs just over the hill", but plenty of opportunites to get into trouble.

I think we will just head up to Exit 160 and not do the Yates Ford rd. I have been told the drive on Rt123 is very nice too.

Anyone else going to join us?

Posted by: JmuRiz Sep 15 2006, 10:43 AM

Rt 123 was nice, before all the development there, but it's better than highway. Granted I've seen 123 from a 1-lane-each-way road from fairfax city to I-95 to it's current state. I guess everywhere has had a lot of change in 20 years though.

Can't wait to get to the house Saturday.

Count me in! Will be heading out from Ashburn so taking 28 to the nice twisties on Clinton RD. 11 am? The 914 is in NH, but will be bringing my air cooled ride.

I love a good 914 caravan, but I think it's torture to have you guys stop in Fredericksburg, and then again at 160 just to meet a couple more of us. I'll just take my time getting there, on clifton/henderson/hampton road. Maybe I'll see 1973914 in his 993. Hey Bill, can you bring my jack adapter plate with you? Thanks.

Anyway, once you get of 95 at exit 160 you're only about 15-20 minutes to the ECC location.

I'm going to try to meet you guys on Yates Ford Road but don't wait for me.

Do you still plan on leaving exit 160 at 10:30? That will give me a general idea what time you'll be at Yates Ford.

Posted by: Kerrys914 Sep 15 2006, 06:04 PM

Okay I haven't heard from many so this is the route I am taking

Exit 133 @ leave as close to 9:45 as I can.
Exit 160 @/by 10:30 leave after about a 5 min wait

ECC by 11:00am

I will not be going the Yates Ford (exit 152) route due to time and some info on the route (Maybe on the way home) I am going to take 160.

Gah, i wish my car was here ssssoooooo bbbbaaaddddd. Grrrr. I have a lot to discuss at the meet, as i'm still on the fence about paint and bumpers and stuff. hopefull seeing others rides will help make my decision.

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Sep 17 2006, 12:06 AM

ECC Kicked ass! Thanks to Kerry for putting everyhting together and Caroline and Alan for hosting. This was my first 914 meet, and after seeing my car on jackstands for a year, it really was nice to see all the cars running - even if running on life support for a few of them. smile.gif I wish that my finace could have been there to see that people actually do DRIVE 914s, not just take them apart and creat masses of dust in the garage with them. I think that somenone said that there were 19 cars at one point.

When the party moved on to the ice-cream parlor, it was very cool to watch. LOTS of noise, smoke, the occational hard starting car. ROOT actually started his car by drifting it backwards down the hill, as his battery was dead. laugh.gif Root, your car looks BADASSED!

I did not end up getting home till around 1am after dropping Mike off at his abode. The weather all day was, well, it was weather. Kinda dark and drizzly weather that finally cleared out right as the party was breaking up. Which, then turned into lots of fog as we got back into PA.

I took a ton of pictures, but many of them did not turn out as well as I had hoped. I was using a new polarizing filter on my wide angle lens, and it needs a bit more light then the sky was going to allow to really work its magic. Tomorrow I'll post them all on my Flickr.com account.

Tired.

These arn't my best work, to be sure. Given the weather I probably should not have used the polarizer, but I really wanted to try it out. Its killer on sunny days, but not all that great on overcast ones, I guess. Eh, live and learn.

Hey bud. If ya wanna know what color got the most attention, it was Joel's ice blue car followed second by blacky the flat black one. All the ladies that I spoke to loved that light metalic blue and it really was sweet according to my taste. I like the maintanence free thing of the flat black one as well as the huge meats on the rims. As for the bumpers, its nice to shed a few pounds with FG ones and smaller the rear one the better but thats just me. The front one is all function as well as looks. If performance and a front oil cooler is in the works, then you have to take that into account as well as keeping the air from going under the chassy for speed. There are lots of pics in the member's car pics thread and I'm certain many parts in member's garage which are available at a discount.

beer.gif Have fun with it bro.

I juts put a downpayment on a 350 SBC V8 from a 1969 4spd Camaro I just test drove - shit - chirpping tires by accident felt nice - and best part is that it is estimated to have about 320HPs - what ever that means : )

This was the first event I've attended and I had a great time meeting and talking to everyone. Thanks again to Kerry, Alan, & Caroline, for setting up and hosting the event. Excellent job and great food!!

I was actually surprised to hear so many positive comments about the color of my 914. From some of the posts on the forum I had gotten the idea that some of the blues weren't very well liked by club members, I assumed mine was one of them. I was quite happy to hear all the good comments. I had an RX-7 in almost the exact same color and loved it. I need to fix my hood though, can't stand that it doesn't fit flush on one side. To anyone interested, it is Marathon Blue Metallic, code L96M.

Great pictures Zach!

Caroline, could that be the used alternator?

Posted by: Racer Chris Sep 17 2006, 12:34 PM

It looks like you guys had a great event! I thought serously about riding down with Ray Gonsalves but really couldn't spare the 24 hours. A new 914 customer was at my shop 'til afternoon yesterday while I finished up the week's work on his car so he could drive it home.
Ray, how was the trip? Uneventful I hope. You've had enough problems with your car recently. It looks like you were an integral part of the tech session there. Did it shift a lot better on the way home?

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 17 2006, 12:48 PM

Rays car:
-Cup bushing at end of shift rod - gone - replaced
- 1st gear - critical/worn parts
- 2nd gear - critical/warn parts
- Front tranny seal leaking = saturated clutch disk = slipping, and glazing of both flywheel and pressure plate. Ray and Sean cleaned and deglazed both. I replaced the clutch disk and front tranny seal afterwards.

At the end he had no tranny leaks, he could find 1st, and the clutch was working correctly. He still needs a rebuild on his tranny, though.

Caroline and Alan, you are two increadibly awsome people. I honestly just liked hanging out with the two of you. I wish I lived closer. Thank you for hosting the event and allowing me to work on Ray's car in your driveway.

Kerry, as always thanks for doing all of the work to make this happen.

It was great to meet many of you (I didnt meet all of you). I am pleasantly supprised at how many great people we have in our reagion. I am lucky to know all of you.

Special thanks to Zach for driving driving me to the event and all the way home adding two hours to your trip. This allowed Noel to use our only functioning car yesterday, allowed me to go to the ECC, allowed me to come home with the tranny to be rebuilt, and allowed me to get to know you a lot more. Your one cool dude thumb3d.gif

biggrin.gif ok well first i would like to thank caroline and allen for hosting the event and letting evil do his thing!!! i would like to thank everyone who attended as it wouldn't have gone without. yes it would have been great to have racerchris at the event to answer 'q's... yes i had an eventfull week prior to the picnic. they say bad things happen in 3's.. first i lost the clutch cable driving on a on ramp in heavy traffic... fixed it then while jacking it up to adjust the cable the jack post collapsed into the car and sad.gif .. went to get gas at station and bottomed out on the ground pump filler.. took out the motor mount bolt, it ripped right out.. fixed it so i knew i wouldn't have problems going down to the picnic. i was a 8 hr. ride and it was uneventful until i lost 1 gear... some of the hills in va are not condusive to slipping clutches mad.gif .. but i did make it in the driveway to a reserved space up front at caroline and allens.. by the way they have a big enough house to host the whole 914 club and we could have pizza from the pro pizza oven in their kitchen chowtime.gif ... as you saw the car went up on jackstands and thats where it stayed ALL day.. we got done at 8 and after i test drove it and a few adjustments we were on the road!!! THANKS to DR. EVIL!!!!!!!!!!! he is the man and proved to be a wealth of information to us all who listened.... driving home driving.gif was a lot more fun than incoming... i was doing way over the speed limit .. no tickets or problems... yes i have 1,2,3,4,5 it will be better when i get the full tranny rebuild from the DR. .... it was really great to meet the faces of 914... hope to see ALL again soon!!!!!! biggrin.gif clap56.gif aktion035.gif mueba.gif

It was really nice meeting everyone, and what a nice spread that Caroline and Alan put out! Definitely was nice being around all those 914s and reminded why I loved my old car as much as I still do. Despite bringing a tail dragger, everyone was real friendly. What a display of comraderie with the clutch and tranny rebuild. This was my first event and can't wait for the next one. Maybe we should not wait and plan some sort of get together in the spring! As well, thank you to Kerry for the hard work he did to make this happen and be a success!!!

My hat goes off to Dr. Evil. smiley_notworthy.gif Every time I have seen him, he has been willing to get under a car and drop a tranny, or to take one apart. Saturday night, he was looking a lot like Grasshopper did that day at Matt's house. If he works half as hard for his patients, they'll be in good hands.

Somebody (maybe Dr. Evil?) suggested a 914 lunch at Chubby's BBQ. It's on US 15 just south of the Mason-Dixon Line in Emmitsburg, Md. I can vouch for the quality of the food there, and the company kinda speaks for itself.

Agree on the BBQ idea. I want to do a foliage drive down the skyline drive - should start another thread for that idea.

Just to add my appreciative THANKS to Carol & Alan for hosting the event. Ate great food, drank good beer, and even got a little dirty with Dr. Evil. It would not be a learning experience with out that. And most of all was meeting everyone. You are all class A people who continue to teach me more and more everytime my car does not start. This was my first event and can't wait for the next one. Maybe we should not wait and plan some sort of get together in the spring! As well, thank you to Kerry for the hard work he did to make this happen and be a success!!!

I would totally be down for a dinner meet in Emmitsburg. Thats not all that far from me at all, then the roads getting there are great 914 roads (at least for me comming from York down the back roads).

Perhaps a few more northern events would be cool too. I know one of the guys i work with lives up in i think lancaster PA, goes there whenever we get a day off. Shouldn't there be plenty of happy roads up there?

bar-b-q..... i love BBQ... where is Deal's Gap? MD? VA? PA?

whoa.... mapquest puts deal's gap NC at 500+ miles / 8+ hours away. tail of the dragon. darn antique tags... (250 mile from home limit)

Deals Gap is far.

There are lots of good curvey roads all around the MD / PA line. There are also several parks where a good get together could take place. Lake Redman in PA and Patapsco State Park near Baltimore would both have ample parking and covered pavilions.

My antique insurance limits me to a 250 mile radius from the house.

Got antique tags but have regular insurance; 200$ every six months. If they ask any questions, I would say it was trailered to a local friends house for a local club car show to keep the milage low. wink.gif

I've heard good things about Deal's Gap, but now everybody seems to know about it. (It's been written up in Road & Track, among other places.)

IMO the problem with Skyline Drive, at least for people who like to drive their cars, is that you always get stuck behind some big frickin' RV going 25 mph. I haven't done Skyline in at least 10 years; I hit the bypays of Pennsyltucky instead.

I know some nice curvy roads within an hour of Hagerstown. I would suggest Old Forge Road out of Rouzerville, up to Mont Alto, or possibly a few nice ones out near McConnellsburg.
