blah.....
i cant win. so... summer comes. have one week off between school and work. lets put in the tranny with short gears..... spend the better part of 3 days doing under car stuff.... found a crack in my euro header (welded up by claytons friend now..) and little stuff...
day 3. trans in. headers in. axles hooked up. all done. freaking 100 degrees out.....
turn key...
loud gear noises.... (yes it has fluid....) and was in neutral...
no AX for me this weekend......
so.. this box is a ZD flipped in third.. and an S for 4th....
what would make these noises?
does it go away when you press the clutch in?
Wassa matta you?
Put the old tranny in and run it...
If I can drive all the way to Santa Ana and see Thomas then drive all the way to Riverside to see, er, uh, no one, (THANKS RON) but still pick up parts and then drive 4 hours (due to multiple fires on the grapevine) back to Bakersfield, you can swap in the old tranny tonight, hang out with Dad Tomorrow during the day even thought it's technically NOT fathers day and still make the a/x...
Yoo can doo eeet!!!
PS: Was gonna call ya earlier but I was too pissed about the fires and traffic...
same TO fork, same bearing, same pivot ball, same shims behind pivot ball....
Ya, put in the old box and run it. Go race and have a good time
Dave
Aaron, c'mon man. Swap your old trans in. Then you can dominate C class instead of get wooped by me in A class
If it makes you feel any better, I may borrow two karts from a friend and we can drive those around the track during down time
AAAron!! Have you learned NOTHING? OK, everyone all together. "Installation is reverse of removal". What's so hard about that? Of course you just mucked up the installation so your next removal wont be valid when you go to install so I guess your just SOL. Where the hell is the EVIL DOCTOR when we need him?
Cheers, Elliot
....paging Dr Evil...you are needed in ER....
Practice makes you faster....I had an assdragger engina and trans out, on the ground, clutch ungued from flywheel and back in in three hours....
Rip out the gear stack and fix what you did wrong!
Did you *clean* the throwout bearing?
Exactly how many have they done? Was it the same one over and over again?
B
How about my house tomorrow, we'll throw the working one back in?
No worries, I have an excellent set of tools (just don't use them much).
VM left...
that wasnt very nice....brad. yes. they are experienced...
same TO bearing. clean.
i can pull the gear stack...... blah....
Brad,
you play the asshole card really well.
Seriously,
If the noise goes away when you step on the clutch, it's the TO bearing.
Don't change the tranny, change the bearing.
the same bearing was just on the old trans. it didnt make a noise 72 hours ago.....
didnt make the noise when i put it back on the old trans the first time....
its a GEAR NOISE
when you step on the clutch... the trans internals stop spinning also....
where as in neutral... they spin..... makes noise in neutral. aint the TO bearing
Look,
Does it drive? Does it shift? Does it propel the car?
Yes? Drive it.
wont drive it. I KNOW it isnt the throwout bearing as it didnt make the noise 72 hours ago on the other tranny.
this NEW tranny has made this noise 2x....
put it in the first time..... and this time.....
Come on, transmissions are very simple devices.
My 915 made aweful noises when first installed. It's perfect now.
All new components except first gear......... as it looked great.
when we took it apart to check the noise the first time.... we found a few brass gear particles... so we replaced the speedo drive gear....
i really hope it is something stupid simple like that.
Shirley you meant simple.
M
Aaron, I would say bring it by the shop, but we don't have any room We could get it busted apart in a few moments and find where your conflict is.
I agreed, after speaking to Aaron, to post my observations.
After listening on the cell phone, it sounds like the the input bearing to the tranny.
That's all I have to say about that. I'm not a tranny expert.
Or the bearing in the flywheel......
thanks joe.... good talkin to you guys
but yes... ONLY makes noise with the clutch out...
looks like i get to pull the gear stack tomorrow or next week....
It's normally captive (pilot bearing). But a bad one, creates serious problems (similar to your problem).
but it would do it with BOTH trannies... not just the new one...
back to input shaft bearing?
how about a spinning main bearing? could be that the race is lose in the case and spins ...
that makes a lot of noise ...
Andy
Aaron,
my point is: you dont CLEAN the throw out bearing EVER.
Now.. comment about the tranny:
It is VERY easy to flip one of the large spacers/washers and get the stack incorrect while assembling the tranny.
I have also seen: MANY people leave out ONE bearing in the reverse idler..
Guess what your problem is: reverse idler
The flat bearing is probably stacked in the wrong place.
B
clean - as in wiped off any sludge off of it. never opened it or exposed it to solvents....
I will pull the stack tomorrow if i have some time before heading out to the AX....
thanks for your tip brad. hope it is right.
I hope it's just a simple fix, but wanted to add that your mother dresses you funny.
G'luck!
M
another helpful tidbit burried in there. is this the "new-old" 914world.com? if so, this is going to be a fun party. whahooo.
k
Sounds like a simple fix to remove the rear cover and count the rev bearings. Should be two.
I have made the mistake of only installing one bearing, but I discovered the other one on the garage floor when cleaning up and said "oh shit" I torn the tranny apart before installing it.
Interlock balls and spacers not properly installed? Dimitri
it hits all gears.....
i will try and pull the stack before the AX....
i have family stuff today....
