I am looking at buying a '73 2 litre(v. nice car) which has a low compression reading in #3 and#4 cylinders.
Any suggestions as to repair of the same?
I figure that I will have to drop the engine and pull the heads, strip them down and send the base heads to a specialist.
The leakdown results were mainly in the valves, some ring leakage in #4.
I will check the bottom end out when I pull the heads.
I guess there is no easy fix,I need some advice and clear diagrams about how to go about it.
Thanks Geoff
I'm not sure what diagrams you're looking for, there is a nice engine drop article here on the site (click 914 Info at the top of this page), the Haynes manual will guide you through teardown, or get Jake Raby's video from Bug Me Video or his online store. For the actual work, I would recommend Adrain @ Headflow Masters or Rimco. Get both heads done at the same time.
If you are going to pull the heads off the engine you might as well rebuild the motor. You will be half the way there to the rebuild by the time you get the motor out. Also, it will be a good time to check the clutch and that darn $3 shift fork piviot bushing.
Len at HAM is the man at repairing these heads IMHO. Nice work and he replaces all the seats properly so they don't fall out! New guides are a must along with the usual crack repairs between the sparkplug hole and valve seats.
Itsa long way from Aust. but worth fixing right the first time.
Definately rebuilt the rest at this time, new rings, bearings, rods reconditioned, and most important a new cam and lifters!
An exploded parts diagram would help to understand how to.
Thanks so far guys.

If money is the reason you are not diving into the bottem end, alot of people here
can relate. You can have the heads rebuilt and re-ring the topend, replace the
front and rear seals, oil cooler seals, oil filler gasket, pilot bearing, you get the
point. Drive it cool and it should last until you are ready to do the whole thing.
You are spot on,thanks mate!
