914World.com _ 914World Garage _ GT style fuel filler hole

Posted by: i love porsche Jul 6 2006, 10:44 AM

ive been thinking about putting a hole in my front hood for a GT style fuelcap...it would be easier to get gas and i think it would look pretty cool...the car wouldnt come out on rainy days anyhow...

anyone have pictures or opinions?

Posted by: roadster fan Jul 6 2006, 11:05 AM

I have thought of doing the same. There are lots of photos of different GT configurations http://www.pbase.com/9146gt/factory_9146gt_race_cars

there should be enough info there to get you going. Hardest part I think will be the cap.......IIRC someone on this board has duplicated one.

Post your progress so I can copy happy11.gif

Its me, I normally sell them for both the original neck, and the 100MM type. I am currently out of stock on the caps, but if you find you own I make the handles as well, and convet a stock cap into the large type. I even make the GT type rain gutter you see here. I am going to order more shortly.

Martin,

Have you taken down your web site that listed the GT items you are making?
I can't seem to find it.

Posted by: North Bay 914 Jul 7 2006, 08:40 AM

I never had my own site, they are shown on a couple of threads here and there, on Armandos site, for Chicago Pete's GT, which is AWESOME, and my progress thread on RENNLIST. Things are a little crazy for me at the moment, with selling/buying a house...so I haven't made to much. I am not finished by any means, just trying to catch up.

Mittlemotor in germay has a nice cap/filler/filter mesh kit for the 914 as well as a nice annodized trim ring for the hole in the hood.

A little spendy though...

With the price of fuel, what are the chances of getting one that locks? I have lost gas out of my wifes car twice now.

I always get the question about it getting stolen, or the gas getting stolen, but the real answer here is Blau does make a locking gas cap for the 100MM neck. The cap also has a spot for a lanyard, to cable it on.

My price is far better than Mittle Motor, and I say that with pride, as I am friends with the owner of Mittle Motor, and have deal pending with him now on some other GT parts. Plus you don't pay shipping from Germany with one of my caps. I paid for it in the beginning.

Here it is on a stock tank under hood, no hole. Also if you are really worried about it and have the hole, a simple section of magnetic sign material painted body color, stuck from underneath would camoflage the hole enough for most to not notice that the hole was even there.

Here's some pictures of my North Bay Caps installed. These are by-far the most accurate in replication and the least expensive.

I opted to use the stock filler and overflow guard. I installed a 100mm neck over the top of them and utilized the stock bolts to attach the assembly back to the tank. The bitch is getting the stock bolts tightened through the opening (they're inside the 100mm filler).

Martin now has new 100mm fillers. I searched the world over for an old bug tank. I believe Martin's (if he still has inventory) were about the same price as the rusty one I had to work with.

Let Martin get settled in and get yours from him.

(shit... now Aaron's gonna want one)

Hey guys, the tank and filler are level so my hood's higher in back and lower in front of my modern "GT" cap. Did you do anything to the gap in the front where the hood dips like flare it?

Posted by: jonwatts Sep 7 2006, 09:36 AM

The 914 already has a locking gas cap, it's called the hood.

I'm far from being a 914 purist but this seems like going to a lot of trouble just so you can drip gas on your hood's paint job.

All that being said, they do look cool on a 550 Spyder.

Then why do the conversion? If the car is a driver, why not leave the filler under the hood locked up safe?

We "cloned" the Nurburgring 914 GT

Including the GT style fuel filler hole

What even looks better is the pop up style gas fill used on the new mustangs. I installed one and never have pop the hood for gas. Hc

You can also retrofit a locking door on the hood which would give you access to your stock cap and not alter the hood's water tight seal. You can get the stuff from any junk yard from some late model cars.

beer.gif Need the keys also.

i started thinking about it when i saw the tangerine colored ruf 3.8 spyder in the 10/05 excellence. spectaculer, but they said it cost 1600 euro's... fwiw...

i'd want mine completely flush fit, cause i don't need to get the q-tips out after washing just to keep water away from gas... but that's just me.

good times~

This is what I did with mine.

Here's mine, got the polished cap and drip tray from Martin when he first did them. Sourced the filler neck from an old VW bus tank.

Anyone has a link to where I can get this one ?

Posted by: totle Oct 7 2013, 12:04 PM

Also, anyone has the correct measurement for where to drill the hole?

Also, anyone has the correct measurement for where to drill the hole?

open the hood and measure from the cowl down to center and from the fender over to center.
Put tape in the two locations.

Closed the hood and measure the exact same way making sure to push the measuring device tight against the cowl and the fender.

Try a motorcycle tank cap. Lock is included. Some sportive Cycles have same caps like the pic.

Rons did a nice job with 110mm Blau cap and he put a locking cap under the 110mm cap. He also made some GT handles

Aaron bought Richie's (nychef) 914...not sure if he or his dad is actually enjoying it.

he was a good guy to have around for wrenching sessions in the old days. Aaron had lots of energy....like Paul!! flag.gif piratenanner.gif smash.gif biggrin.gif

That's exactly how it looks when I hauled it out of Jersey. I have been so busy working on it, never have a chance to look back at those pictures.

Thanks.
