You have the shifter set too far forward. Loosen it and pull the shifter back. This will give you the throw you need for R24.

Loosen the clamp at the access hole. You acces it with a 13mm and a wrench on one side.

I don't think it's that. I can't move the rod (by hand) into the R,2,4 gears.
It feels like it may be in a bind somewhere.

Pull the spacers out I installed in the bottom of the mounting for the shifter.

I don't think that'll make a difference.
I was at the back of the car when I couldn't do it by hand, not at the shifter.

the box is an 1/8 to 1/4 inch higher now, since the carrier was scrapped.
could this make the difference?

Do you have the linkage installed correctly? Is is rubbing on a header/exchanger?

sean, iirc this is for a tailshifter. if ALL else fails remove the inspection cover at the very back of the trans, on the bottom. see if the rolled pin #11 p86 haynes securing the two levers is ok. #'s12 and 14 same page. i had a guy tell me i needed a new trany long ago. nope a 79 cent part. get a pan when you remove the cover gear lube is going to come out.
