914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Weight savings....

Any idea what´s the weight savings on:

1) 21mm hollow torsion bars vs. 21mm solid bars. Who makes a good hollow 21mm bar for the 914-4?

2) 19mm front sway bar vs. hollow front sway bar. My current bar is a Weltmeister...which hollow bar would be a good substitute?

3) OE rocker panels vs. FG rocker panels?

4) Odyssey battery vs. a standard (DieHard in my case) battery?

What other items could be easily replaced for weight saving purposes??

Being that your torsion bars are so low on the car the differance in weight won't really effect anything. Same thing with the rocker panels. The stock ones are about twice the weigh of the f/g one but you talking about 4 pounds vs 2 pounds. Most people go to f/g rockers because the stock ones rust out.

The racing battery will save 10-15 pounds and is a very quick easy item.

Change everything that bolts on to f/g parts: hoods, bumpers, valances, and get a lt. wt. top. Now your talking over 100 pounds.

Depending on the use of the car you can remove everything that isn't being used, for example all the fresh air fans and ductwork under the hood behind the gas tank.

Don't need a heater in Miami, (keep the one under your seat) so get a header to replace the heater boxes.

The more you stare at your car the more you'll see things that can go....

hey ricky,

didn't know there was another 914 guy around here

replacing the glass with lexan is a huge weight savings, maybe 70 pounds or so. If you are building a race car its a great idea and safer too.
