914World.com _ 914World Garage _ CHT Locctions

Posted by: jd66921 Aug 25 2006, 03:00 PM

I just installed a VDO CHT kit. I could not get the sensor under the #3
spark plug as recommended, so I temporarily placed it under the CHT
for the fuel injection system. I used a large washer between the original sensor
and the new one, so the new sensor is in direct contact with the head near #3
cylinder.

Has anyone ever experimented with locations? So far, I am happy with it
where it is. The gauge is responsive and "interesting" to watch! The response
time is quite fast. At idle the temperature goes up, and drops as the engine
speed increases. This is pretty much expected, but more than I would have
expected.

My only concern is that the absolute temperature is quite low. Driving at ~40,
the gauge reads about 175 degrees. At idle, it goes up to about 225. At speed
it seems to be about 200. I expect my location is not optimal, but I mainly wanted
to see the trends. Even if is is low by 150 degrees, I am about right, based on
information from lapuwali (boy, I miss James already sad.gif ).

Does anyone have any input on my situation? This is an underpowered 1.8 L-Jet.

Thanks,

Jeff

You will definately have a different tempurature reading from the CHT location than spark plug #3. I have seen them put under the exhaust nuts, but I presume that it would be reading hotter than the spark plug. Oh you should be in the neighborhood of 350 degrees once all warmed up

May as well not even have the gauge.

Under the plug or no where.

The location you chose is one of the worst possible locations- my data shows it clear as a bell.

Get that sender under the plug, no matter how difficult it may be-

BTW- I have seen these two locAtions be more then 225F delta on the same cylinder with my data logger.

Thanks Jake, that's what I was afraid of.
