914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Members VIN Numbers Page updated ...

Posted by: SirAndy Sep 7 2006, 09:39 PM

i've updated the Members VIN number page to be more "user friendly".
this is the beginning of a major overhaul in how we're going to collect and maintain the members VIN list.

http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=memberVINs

when i'm done with it, you'll be able to:

- add as many VIN's to your accounts as you want
- edit/delete your VINs
- add comments to your VINs
- add VINs of crushed/parted out/dead cars
- add comments to *other* members VINs (clearly marked as non-owner comments)
- search & sort using various criterias

Does this new format extract the data from the individual control panels Andy? How come none of my 3 cars shows up on this new list...?

yes, there is ...

the display comes out of the new database structure i created to support the additional functionality ...

the "old" system is still in place on the signup page and in the members profile page.
once i got all the new functionality built, it'll all go into the new system.

i do have an "update" script that (for now) i have to run manually ...

PS: as my first post suggest, this is "work in progress" ...

No, don't take it down. A few little problems to iron out is all. Probably about time to urge people to update their profile. Perhaps nail a thread for a while to encourage people to check and update the profile. There are lots of VIN's that are incorrect in some way, perhaps if they are not valid numbers, they don't get posted in the regular lists but in a 'junk' list. That way people are inclined to correct the data.

yepp, that's all on the list. i'm already filtering out a lot of "junk", what i haven't done yet is to filter out obvious problems with the range, like for example:

4762961159 baycountrymotor
4762961159 dhopkins

i seriously doubt there were 61159 914s made in '76 ...

Yes, a filter to validate the number would be useful. We need to ensure the filter parameters are correct also. Our info list is not fully correct.

Yes I did spot 4762904099 today. Can't wait to get more info.

here is some info....
"Hi Geoff,

Thanks for your email.

I am currently out of the country. However, the engine of my 76 is out and is ready for complete overhaul. As soon as I get back to California, I will take some pictures and post them to share with the members.

Thanks again and will get back to you.

Cheers...

Cielito B. Cortez"

I hope he is buying a Raby 2056 engine kit as those are on sale for 20% off this week if you mention the radioshow. Maybe McMark should stock up... biggrin.gif

Andy, another great addition to this fantastic site....

As a later suggestion/enhancement, if you could add the ability to list the original color, engine size and possible thumb-nail sized current picture....

Again, thanks to everyone involved in this enhancement....

If we could add some small pix and note on where we saw the car last it would be cool. I have pix of a totalled 914-6 I could add. I am 99% sure the car was thrown away. Adding a desc/pic of the condition and vin lets us document these sightings....

but very nice, work appreciated...

alright, did some more work, check it out ...

http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=membervins

you can now:

- edit your own VINs
- mark a car as "Dead" (crushed, cut up, burnt to the ground, you get the idea ...)
- dead cars have a red X next to their VIN
- click on a Owners name to bring up a new window with his/her profile. you can send emails and PM to them from there ...

more to come later, i'm tired now ...

Posted by: davep Sep 9 2006, 08:45 AM

Proto 914001 to 914120
914/6 9140430001 to 9140432668
914/6 9141430001 to 9141430443
914/6 9142430001 to 9142430260
916 9142330011 to 9142330020
914/4 4702900001 to 4702913312
914/4 4712900001 to 4712916231
914/4 4722900001 to 4722921580
914/4 4732900001 to 4732927660
914/4 4742900001 to 4742921370
914/4 4752900001 to 4752911368
914/4 4762900001 to 4762904100

We know for certain that 1972 914/6 did go past 240 up to 260.
We know for certain that 1976 914/4 did go past 4175 up to 4100.
I have seen differing numbers for 1972 914/4: 16232
I have seen differing numbers for 1974 914/4: 21379
I have seen differing numbers for 1975 914/4: 11369
The prototypes are a bit of an unknown, but this covers the range we know.
However I am confident with the list above.

schweet! smilie_pokal.gif

i'll leave some "wiggle" room on those numbers, meaning, i won't reject numbers that fall out of that range, but i'll clearly mark those entries and warn people that their numbers seems to be out of range ...

also, what's the known VIN range for the LE cars? got an list of known factory GTs? (other than the list that's floating around online) ...
how about known m471 cars?

anything else special?

Not as far as I know. Why waste ten good numbers? They didn't start at anything but 1 for the 914/4 and all the 911's I checked. Here is some good reference material:

http://members.rennlist.com/914_collectibles/Recalls.htm

I edited my previous list to add the apparent discrepancy for 1974. Why, oh why, is there so many points of discrepancy? Then there is the annual production list that Andy prepared. Lots of discrepancies there also; I'm guessing about 60+ 914/6 produced in calendar year 1969.

Andy, I've got five more VINs you'll be able to add to the "crushed" list. I just got back from a scavenger hunt and recorded the numbers to update the list. 47229155, 4732904168, 4742917944, 4752906779 and 4752909710

When you guys do these hunts, please try to get a bit of additional info when possible:
From the Karmann badge on the drivers door hinge post; paint code and chassis #
From the decal on the door latch post: the date code

I have 100 or so registrations from when I ran the 914club website (dgi)
I am willing to pass the torch, on the 4 cyl stuff
DaveP are you interested?

Also have a 1971 914-4 with serial number 91412903422 (with COA)
Have you seen this number combo in the past?

Posted by: Bleyseng Sep 13 2006, 05:50 PM

Why not have a 914/6GT forum with all this kind of info/posts?? Like the other ones ie Concours so this info isn't buried so fast in the Garage with all the other daily crap!

Posted by: davep Sep 13 2006, 06:50 PM

Yes on the data.
That is one messed up VIN for the 914/4. drunk.gif
How many places did they put that VIN?
It may be one of the first screw ups, but not the last:
There was the recall to replace the decal with the wrong date code for perhaps the whole month of Sept. 1975.
There was the car where the Karmann badge (chassis # and paint code) were for the wrong body.
There were a few paint codes that had invalid codes.

Doesn't have to be GT forum, but it could be a VIN forum.
I try to chase down cars by VIN. I may not know the VIN to start, but since some cars undergo dramatic transformations over time, the VIN is sometimes the only constant.

i'll have a page ready pretty soon where you can submit VINs that are not yours (meaning, they don't have to be tied to a member here).

that way, we can grow the list of known cars, including crushed/dead/cut ones ...
