will the stamped steel wheels (the kind with the 4 raised "spokes") handle 195/60's without rubbing?

Yes I ran them before my Empies. It did rub some on the inside of the front wheel well toward the trunk.

Right

I kinda wish I still had the wheels. Might be a good temporary wheel for AX tires

I had a '75 with those wheels and 195/65. No problems.
Also, I have often relied on Tire Rack's online specs for various size/brand tires and compared with their spec for whatever tire is on the car. If the tire I want is 1" wider I simply measure to see if I have a half inch inside and out. Method has worked so far.

...Just make sure they're the 914 steelies, not the Bug ones. Check for about 4 1/2" of backspace, or a little more.
