914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Leaving for RRC

Posted by: jd66921 Sep 17 2006, 10:21 AM

Hi,

I thought I'd post a little early to get the word out.

I will be leaving for RRC Tuesday morning. Since I live on the Texas Gulf
Coast, I am a contingent of one, so I will be driving alone. My 914 is running
well, but we never know what will happen.

My basic route will be back roads to San Anotonio, I-10 to Junction, and then
North through Lubbock and Amarillo. I hope to get to SE Colorado Wed night,
and then I will join the Denver contingent for the drive to Moab on Thursday.

If ayone is along that general route and can help me, just in case, please PM
me.

Thanks,

Jeff

Someone has a list of members with phone #s that may be along your route. I forget who has the list. I would try and get this list in case you have any problems on your way to denver. Good Luck and I'll be seeing you in Moab.

Hey Jeff! You know alot more about your car than you did when you left L.A. in it. I'll see you in Moab.

Yes. The COOLest people are leaving on Friday morning. biggrin.gif

We have a clan of trojans heading out Thursday as well as Shelby/914 (danny) in a party of one. Everyone else is leaving on Friday.

I am stoked to hear that you're coming with us Coloradans. 2 Malaga Red big bumper cars heading out to Moab - it doesn't get any better than that!

Looking forward to it!

I am honored to join your contingent!

Ran a final test tonight. Running cool and will still do 92+
by GPS! Car hadn't given up, but I ran out of road! We'll
see how the gas mileage is! I love credit cards!

I'm not excited, am I?

Here's my cell number. 720-480-2540.

I just read all of your first post in this thread. Who do you plan to leave with from CO on Thursday? There were only a couple of guys planning a Thursday departure and I think they've changed their minds.

Posted by: brant Sep 17 2006, 08:55 PM

Mike,

I think Jeff is staying with Bob in lamar on wed night
then staying with me in longmont on thursday night

I have to call you and put some details into place

Posted by: Series9 Sep 17 2006, 11:02 PM

My group will be leaving on Friday morning.

If you come through ABQ, you have a place to stay and back-up on the drive.

I was just told that I have to fly on Thursday and Friday, so I can't leave for Moab until Friday afternoon, but I will be there in the evening.

How about posting from somewhere North of Lubbock,TX? 11 hour drive, and I
am STILL in this stinkin' state! Oh well, holed up in a motel and have two
one cold one in the cooler! Life is good!

914 ran perfectly! Scary, isn't it? Thought I might have to abort at home (heat),
but I tweaked the mixture richer and got the heat down in the engine. Only issue
is my computer will not charge from the car, so no navigation. Not a big deal, but
I miss it!

By the way, if you didn't see my previous notes, I am running L-Jet but no CHT
sensor. I put in a CHT gauge, and I put in a variable resistor instead of the CHT
sensor for the FI. Now I can set the car full rich to start it, and then lean it out for
running. I am finding out that one point seems to give the leanest mixture and
still keep the engine cool. The CHT sensor was running way too hot! I'll figure out
what value I am using in Moab. My gas mileage is shitty (24 mpg), but the car is
running cool and smoothly. It's like the commentators at the 24 hours of
Daytona - every little smell, noise bump, vibration scares the drivers!! Hope I can
finish though. I'm having a good ride, touch wood!!!

Jeff

jeff, you are see some fantastic scenery when you get to Central Colorado. It will make up for all of those hours spent in TX. We may even see some fluffy white stuff going over the passes on friday morning.

Sounds good to me. I've seen enough of Central Texas! It's okay for a while,
but gets pretty tiring after 6 or 7 hours. There were a few red rocks though, and
some windmills. How tall are those suckers anyway??

Hope we get a little heat though. It was 70 this morning and I was freezing!!
Didn't even open the windows for three hours!

Keep up the prayers for another few days! Things went TOO well. Didn't even
leak burn much oil!!

Posted by: TROJANMAN Sep 19 2006, 07:20 PM

70? and Cold?
wow, you are in for a shock going through the rockies.

I'm gonna freeze my buns off tomorrow, 53 overnight. You gotta remember, I
live on the Texas Coast. It doesn't get really hot there, just 95 and HUMID
every day for six months.... You kinda get used to it.

Actually I like the cooler weather. I spent most of my life in Massachusetts.
Can't wait for fall!!

Jeff I should be home most of the day.

10:00-11:00 test drive make sure CHT gauge is working correctly. Not that it will make a bit of difference, since it will be so FRIGGIN ASS COLD in the mountains. I should be more concerned about the car freezing... What the hell was I thinking moving East... headbang.gif
12:30-1:00 kids school thing. After that I will be here... Feel free to stop by..

Posted by: brant Sep 21 2006, 09:51 PM

Well, I've made it to Brant's. No more problems to
speak of. Another nice group of people to stay with.
Got a late start out of Brant's parents this morning
.
Hopefully I will have lights tomorrow. I found that my
headlights trip the thermal breaker and shut the car down.
Rewired that....

Getting a vibration from the car. It is cyclical. Vibrates for
1/2 mile, doesn't for 1/2 mile, etc. What could cause that.
One front tire is cupped some. But the way it changes is
weird. I swapped the tires front ot back to see if that helps.

Hope the snow isn't deep. Of course, I've driven in snow for
40 years and six years in snow in a 914, so I'm not worried!!

Hate to start new threads, so I resurrect one, and, I'm not home yet!

Somebody in one of the threads said it is not the cars or the driving, it's the
people. They are right. I probably can't say this without sounding sappy, but so
be it!

I hung with Turtle Grirl (Liz), Series 9 (Joe), and LuckieO (Lauren) yesterday
waiting for their tralier to show up to take Liz's car home. On the way, my clutch
cable broke. Liz stripped her car to replace my cable, and got me going again.

I stayed in Farmington,NM last night, and we all went out to dinner. I did not have
my wallet, so they bought... What can I say?

I didn't even get to say goodbye this morning, they were still partying in the road
(have parking lot, will party) when I gave up and went to bed.

Thanks also to Casey, who made the 4 hour trip to Moab to get the car and then
put us up last night! Helluva guy!!

This is not to forget everyone else at RRC who helped, but I'll be sending out
notes to them later, once I get home. Made it to Ft. Stockton today, only 450 to
go...

Got the hot start problem again, so it will be interesting!

Guys, you made my trip!! I am honored to be associated with this group!!!
I owe you big time!!

I heard you leave this morning, but I wasn't about ready to get up yet! (We finally called it quits sometime after 3am. The dog wasn't wanting to play fetch anymore, so we gave up and went inside... sleep soon followed!) Nico came to pick us up this afternoon, so we put my car on our trailer, and left Farmington around 4. We are all home safe and sound, and my car is back in Joe's garage!

More about that later...

Let us know when you make it home safe, and I'll PM the addresss for a new clutch cable!!!! biggrin.gif
