914World.com _ 914World Garage _ After 40 months I am back on the Road!

Posted by: william harris Oct 1 2006, 09:37 AM

40 months ago I purchased a tired 74 2.0 that had seen its better days! The 2.0 power plant and been pulled, supposedly due to a spun bearing (this turned out to be inaccurate). A 1.7 was sourced from a 73 donor, parts car and leaked oil so bad from the push rod tubes that you could smell the oil burning off the heat exchangers. The car's suspension was gone, still running on the factory OEM pieces (also leaking pretty bad from the struts). The 1.7 had been converted to a single carb set up and ran very poorly. The rust in the hell holes had been glassed over, etc. etc. Well last Friday (two days ago) I picked up the almost completed car (going back for a few small details) and boy have I enjoyed the 300 miles this weekend. Here it sits this afternoon in my office parking lot.

Nice color, looks good.

Last night I sat down with the inches thick stack of receipts, etc. and retraced the long route to bring this car back. I have retained the original fuel injection, but the motor has a few surprises. 2056 cc with head work by Hoffman Machine shop and a Jake Raby cam that really comes alive above 2,500 rpm and then there is the real growl exiting the Chris Foley Evo header system. Koni shocks, 100 pound springs, OEM front and rear anti-sway bars, Elephant Racing poly bronze bushings, Turbo tie rods, etc. This car just brings a smile to your face in the twisties! cool.gif

I plan on just driving the hell out of the teener until the winter conditions dictate putting it away. Then I will finish the interior, redo the seats and remove the bumpers, weld up the holes for the tits and rechrome them. I will pronounce it finished and prepare for the trip to Colorado next summer with Eric Sanders.

You might notice that I eliminated the side markers, the holes were butt welded up as well as the hole for the radio antenna. The body work was a metal shaping and finishing with no filler. Color is Lapis Blue, a modern Porsche color.

There are so many people on this board that made this possible: Bradholio, Jake Raby, Chris Foley, Jeff Bowlsby, Perry Kiehl, Rich Bontempti, Eric Shea and on and on. There were times when I just thought the project would never be finished and really would have lost heart except for the support of this community.

I am looking for interesting roads to cruise and test the limits of the suspension. The handling is confidence inspiring and remember, my previous daily driver was a Boxster S and the fun factor here is multiples higher.

I left the tits off because they were shot, cracked and bring rust into the car from the bolts thru the bumper. I will include a couple of pictures of the power plant. No heat from the Evo headers, so when it get cold I may have to use the electrics from the bike suit plugged into the cig lighter. laugh.gif

You can't really see it very well, but this engine was detailed to the nth degree. Powder coated engine tin, all pieces cleaned and painted and the suspension is just as clean.

SO very Cool, congrats on getting her back on the road!
thumb3d.gif

Posted by: william harris Oct 1 2006, 11:19 AM

Raby: that Type 4 motor is a blast. It really reminds me of my first Boxster with the 2.7 motor - when it gets on cam it just really pulls. 1st and 2nd gear are kinda short legged, but in 3rd, 4th and 5th from 2,500 rpms it just moves and pulls very strong. Now I only have 300 miles on the motor so I am keeping the revs down to not much over 4,000, I can't wait to see the top end! The cam in kinda lumpy, at a stop light, with the Evo headers, it kinda chugs along like a small block Chevy. Thanks so much for all your contributions to this project. beerchug.gif

Posted by: Jake Raby Oct 1 2006, 12:11 PM

Sure..
Don't be a fraid to wind it up a little. In my experience the way an engine is broken in is also the same way it'll drive later on.

As long as it don't leak oil or have any rattles just spool it up to redline.. If its gonna break, may as well break it right now! Waiting around won't change a thing... That being said I'd redline it at 6,500 :-0

Posted by: rjames Oct 1 2006, 01:56 PM

Sweet car! Love the color, and one day I hope to be in a position to consider adding that engine to my car...

run it to 6500 rpm- recommended? N I C E ! !

Posted by: william harris Oct 1 2006, 04:21 PM

6,500 RPM!!! Man this is gonna be good. I better carry bail money in the car. Seeing an indicated 90 mph at 4,000 rpm, course that must be off with the tire size exceeding the stock speedo gearing. Raby, I'll let you know how she runs. Oh sweet Jesus, this is gonna be fun. boldblue.gif

Very, very well done.

Congratulations.

Posted by: william harris Oct 2 2006, 07:00 AM

Holy Crap!!! With Raby's encouragement I wound it up a bit this morning on I-95, 5,000 rpm with an indicated 110 mph and still pulling strong when I backed off. With 1,500 rpms to go the top end on this motor is really up there mueba.gif Raby: what do you expect from top end in terms of speed/mph??? This Type 4 really moves pray.gif

Posted by: Jake Raby Oct 2 2006, 08:09 AM

Top end is dependant upon your tire height and gearing more thawn anything else, aerodynamics also play a key role at higher speeds... You should be able to see 125 pretty easily if that engine is making the power that it should be.

Just because the engine will spin to 6,500 RPM doesn't mean it will have the HP in 5th gear to push the 914 through the wind to higher top speeds. When you hit the aero wall the car goes no faster..

Posted by: jonwatts Oct 2 2006, 08:20 AM

No radio? All you have to listen to is the engine wacko.gif

j/k I'm sure you like that song just fine biggrin.gif

Posted by: william harris Oct 2 2006, 08:31 AM

Yes, no radio. The only music I want to hear is the Type 4 blasting thru the Evo headers. Beautiful, especially as the rpms build!!! burnout.gif

How much? To tell you the truth, I have never added up the costs and really never intend to. Some items - soda blasting to bear metal: $2,000, paint - three color coats and many clear coats, with all metal body work - $6,000, engine build and rebuild (don't ask) $5,000 - $6,000, etc. etc. Ever read the book, the Gold Plated Porsche? But this was a labor of love, I did as much of the work myself as my meager talents allowed and this car is NEVER FOR SALE. Here's what she started as.

Posted by: william harris Oct 5 2006, 11:33 AM

Guys and Gals, do I ever have that biggrin.gif going today. See, until today I was driving the teener with a bad MPS. Got a rebuilt one overnight from Performance Products and all I can say is HOLY CRAP burnout.gif boldblue.gif clap56.gif mueba.gif This 2056 performance motor - Raby's special cam, Hoffman heads and Evo header system just rocks!!! 120mph at 5,500 rpm and still pulling strong. I almost didn't go back to work today. The Boxster S is going into the garage for a rest until the snow starts falling. YEHAAAAAA!!!! w00t.gif

Posted by: Jake Raby Oct 5 2006, 08:49 PM

Sell the Boxster..

Imagine a 2270 with FIFTY more HP than what you have now- thats reality...

Glad you are having fun, these types of results keeps the -4 going strong and is proof that our thoughts really work!

Posted by: william harris Oct 5 2006, 09:23 PM

Come on Jake, I gotta have something to drive in the winter. This engine has such a wonderful range. If I want to drive it very easy, it just purrs along like a little bug - kinda reminds me of the Karmann Ghia I drove in high school. But now with a working MPS, if I want to nail it, now I have the full rpm range in 1 and 2nd gear, this was missing before, I saw 5,000 rpm in 1st and 2nd today and boy does she wind up fast. Pulls really strong in 3rd and 4th gears and by the time you hit 5th you are over 100 mph and grinning from ear to ear. Pulling some very fast corners I noticed the oil pressure light coming on for a few seconds, I assume the Gs must have collected the oil on one side of the case. Is this something I should be concerned about? I have put the Boxster in the garage for the next couple of weeks. 400 miles since Friday and over the weekend I should add at least another 200 miles. Good gas mileage too. My highest regards for your amazing talent in the Type 4 development. thumb3d.gif

Posted by: Jake Raby Oct 6 2006, 07:37 AM

Watch that oil light... You might need to upgrade to a "Tuna can" or a deep sump if that occurs more often..

Keep having fun..

Posted by: william harris Oct 6 2006, 08:01 AM

OK, I gotta ask, is this part available from the Type 4 store? Part number please. Don't want to slow down from the maximum G turns. happy11.gif

Posted by: william harris Oct 6 2006, 08:46 AM

Raby: another thing. I am sending the old MPS to Bleyseng to rebuild. He can fine tune the MPS to the specs of this engine. Can you supply cam grind number, duration and lift so those parameters can go into his work. You may PM me with the specifics. Thanks. BTW, your PM on the board does not work.

William,
great to see you up and running!
It's a common practice to overfill the crankcase by 1/2 quart to minimize bearing starvation from spirited driving. This might be a good idea until you get the Tuna can.

Posted by: Bleyseng Oct 6 2006, 10:18 AM

PelicanParts has the tuna cans...

Jake, Is he running the 9550 cam???

Posted by: Jake Raby Oct 6 2006, 10:28 AM

William, I turned off my PM months ago.. Too many questions being directed through it that needed documenting in my store..

I **think** he got a 9550 cam.. Chris might remember, he built the engine.

Posted by: william harris Oct 6 2006, 11:08 AM

Thanks Jake and Chris. I'll check the invoice from the Type 4 store. Jake, do you think adding 1/2 quart of oil is good idea? idea.gif

Posted by: Bleyseng Oct 6 2006, 11:11 AM

I runit all the time like that since I drive like a manic. burnout.gif

Posted by: william harris Oct 6 2006, 11:34 AM

Bleyseng: Isn't that why we have the 914? burnout.gif driving.gif I'll just add a 1/2 quart and see what happens. There is this really tight S curve about a mile from my house, most cars slow down to about 10 mph, I made it just fine at 45 mph yesterday, this is where the green light winked at me. Otherwise, felt so good I just had to do it again. happy11.gif

It was a pleasure working with you on the project (albeit not physically) It is nice to hear the phone calls continue during the project. It means the customer has not lost interest and will have a pristeen car when done.

Posted by: william harris Oct 7 2006, 04:31 PM

Bleyseng: Well today (Saturday) didn't exactly go as planned. My wife had a conflict with the schedule, so I ended up taking my 15 year old son in for his dentist appointment for a root canal this morning. That pretty much shot the idea of driving to Ft. Devens for the Zone 1 autocross. So instead, I went home and did a few details - pulled the driver door panel off, adjusted the window stop to allow window to raise to full height (small gap before) and move the channel over to slant in correctly (too upright before) and lubed the door stay rollers and springs (creaking before) and then buttoned up the door. Then I drove over to Eric Sanders house and we spent some time adjusting the drivers side headlight to get to gaps lined up to suit us - it was too low and off center before and then I pulled the steering wheel off to fix the turn signals so that they would cancel - and now they do. So I spent the rest of the day driving another 100 miles. Almost 600 miles since I picked her up and she runs better all the time. Got home just in time to wash off the dust and even dried her off (more pictures of the cleaner car tomorrow). So here she is about 6:00 EST after a fun day burnout.gif

The paint has not been buffed out yet and has no wax on it. The car is going back into the body shop Monday to repair the dent in the trunk lid some asshole made as my car was parked in my driveway Thursday night. This is the second time my cars have been vandalized at my house. A couple of months ago some jerk slammed the drivers door with a hard object and the dent doctor worked miracles to fix that one. Now I have to move all my other cars around to put the Porsches away in the garages each night. Sometimes this is a PITA. But with mental midgets roaming the streets what ya gonna do?? chair.gif

My 15 year old son (who worked alot on the 914 with me) was so mad he wanted to hide in the front yard with his paintball gun waiting for the jerks to make a return appearance. I nixed that plan. My Porsches have been vandalized before, years ago I had a new C4S and while parked at my office building someone keyed every body panel - had to have the whole car repainted. There are too many sick people in this world. stromberg.gif

I didn't have time to wash the Boxster S, so I just shot a few pics for Bleyseng. Think the hardtop will be going on soon. I have already removed the 18 inch wheels and summer tires and put the 17 inch wheels with winter 210s on. These tires really are all season and give a very nice ride and can handle the snow and ice with no problems.

You might notice how much better the headlight on the driver's side is lined up now - thanks to Eric Sanders. The surf was really pounding at Bass Rocks today. Here's the beach at Gloucester, a beautiful afternoon.

I almost made 600 miles since we fired up the rebuilt motor this weekend, had to give up the afternoon to enjoying the Patriots beat the Dolphins. clap56.gif

I wanted to take pictures at Bass Rocks, but there is no place to park there. So I turned around and headed down to Magnolia. Here the street runs right along the coast, but again no parking. So I turned onto Lexington Avenue in Magnolia and took a few shots looking back at the ocean.

As you can see, Fall is well advanced here in New England. Already dropping down into the 40s and we will see the 30s before long. The 2.0 seemed to enjoy the crisp cool air.

After a few more shots in Magnolia, I turned south again and cruised thru Manchester By The Sea and into Beverly Farms.

Ran right into some big bicycle race and had to dodge bikers for the next 10 miles. Here we are in Beverly Farms, the Gold Coast and former retreat of U.S. Presidents in the 1800's.

Even though this would have been a perfect weekend to enjoy the motorcycle, the BMW sat idle as I put the teener thru the paces. I am still getting used to the shift pattern, a hard habit to break and relearn after driving the Boxster S for all these years while the project was underway. driving.gif

Monday the teener goes back into the body shop to fix the dent some cretin left in the trunk lid. So, I will have to drive or ride the bike until she is fixed up. I have to get as much driving in as possible before the salt hits the roads and the long, long winter sets in. I am dreaming of moving to San Diego soon! idea.gif

Bleyseng: hope you enjoyed these pictures, wanted to be a little more creative and interesting than the still shots at home. I will pack up and mail the MPS to you for a rebuild this week. I expect your custom tuned version to be at least a modest improvement over the stock unit. thumb3d.gif
