914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 1975 911S tranny?

Posted by: jaybird840 Oct 6 2006, 04:36 PM

Hi All,
Came across a 5sp gearbox from a '75 911S recently. It can be had for <$500. Is it a good upgrade for the 914??? (if you're eventually gonna push much more HP than stock). TIA.

Its a 915 tranny. You only really want one if you're putting in a big hp engine (like a 3.6L /6 or a v8)

1975 915s have nearly ALL the uncorrected faults of the series. The first year you want is an 82. The Cap'n

its a 915 and only switch to it if you are planning on a high hp six. It will need a few conversion parts $$$$ to make it work. It should be checked over as there are a few problems with loose bearing saddles.

It does however have the course splined stub axles that allow you to simply plug in the 914 axles. Budget about $4000 to the price of the transaxle to end up with a good, useable trans for your project. They are good but expensive.

Also, 1975 has the oddball release lever on the clutch release arm that doesn't fit anything.
