well...with Pete's engine rebuild sorta done, what did you do with your time this weekend?
Richie (chef) and I started digging into my Zambezi teener. Drained the gas, removed the tank. Got the fuel pump, master cylinder, rear calipers off the car. Looking to drop the engine in the next few weeks.
....so...what's up? Maybe Billy still needs some company while he installs his tie rods.
i would like to have heat. any movie time time available? anyone local have the flexible hoses off the h.e's to sell?
I'm around this w'end to lend a hand w/whatever needs done.
I would like to come down and hang out again. I have been too busy lately. I am building a house and working overtime to pay for it, so my weekends are shot, but if the weather's bad this weekend I may decide to come down.
Hey Ray,
Are you taking offers on parts off the green car? If so I need a few items.
Keith
I actualy wouldn't mind going over there tonight. I have my car with me and was gonna work on it here at work.
I need to finish installing my turnsignals. Sooner or later I am not gonna be able to outrun the radio
i would like to try to to the h.e's ,heater cable and hoses.think it might be an all day deal and don't want to try it at night. weekend would be great. let me know
I have some copper heat exchanger nuts for you.

thanks pete. i'll take em. we should give your car a once over before you tow. thought maybe fuel pressure is too high, passing past the injectors and burning up in the exhaust? is that possible? seems odd that it ran so well that day and not anymore. maybe it is the loose dizzy

cant happen that way unfortunatly. At least with conventional modern day FI systems. If there is too much pressure than he is probably just loading up on fuel and that is why you are seeing the white smoke.
It would either fill the cyl with fuel or send it back to the tank, or possibly both.
_billy
sweet sounds great. thx. let me know when you are available.
anybody else? teh sooner the better with this bc this is the only thing from holding me back from driving the car. Colder it gets the less desirable it is to drive and even start.
thx again
_billy
finaly got turn signals
As much as I ghetto fab everything they don't look that bad.
if we set a date ill try and make it...availability kind of floats around for be because i work on weekends
i would like to try to get my car to movietime soon..to do some work on it
I'd like to help out but its gonna be tough getting up there anytime soon.
Looks like Sunday is a possible for me. I need more info onthe Tie rod situation. Is the plan to put in new turbo tie rods? Have you taken out the old set?
yup, new turbo tierods goin in. I still have the old ones in the car but there is tons of play in the ball joints. One of the old ones is bent decently too.
Im not sure if i will actually be able to drive the car all the way from Vernon to MovieTime on Sunday, but i certainly wouldnt mind trying and then calling AAA to bring me the rest of the way. :haha:
OK, just finished my brakes up. They still need some fine tuning and prob another bleed but they work just as they did before, just without all the rust and holes and stuff.
Been having some issues with the car starting lately. Finally decided to pull the plugs out and see what was goin on. The left 2 cyl i pulled and seemed to not be in too good a shape. The motor is basically just brand new and im having issues with it already. Im not happy about this at all.
Cleaned up the 2 plugs i pulled and put them back in. Started to fire a bit more and was able to get it started, finally, after about 15 min more of cranking the thing.
Drove it around to help it out, and just as i got back in front of my house the car died  Got it in the driveway and checked the oil to make sure it had enough. It did.
The only thing i can figure is that the motor isnt completely tuned right and it is allowing too much fuel to get in and kill my plugs causing the car to die and hard starts, even on warm days like today.
Looks like i gotta call Powertech tomorrow...
o.k kids what's the plan for this weekend? i have a bunch o' little projects i need to get started on before the cold comes.
sounds good..il try to come by for a bit..what are we working on?
I'm in for Sunday.
Rear shocks are uncharted waters. The heat sounds like a good project. The shocks need you to be able to lay the car up b/c sometimes extra parts need to be ordered.
[/quote]
no layups if we re not sure we stick to the h.e's. think about how to rig up the cable on the fly. one side is already attached one is about 6 inches short. story of my life.
im up for starting earlier if movietime is available
im in! is it possible we can do the tierods on my car?
Rich - as far as the rear shocks go, i have done the springs in the rear on my car, so if you are looking for someone that has done them before...
_billy
imagine my suprise. just opened the box, front shocks came rears still out there.
Got a little project I want to do maybe in a month or so if you guys want to help me. I am deathly afraid of doing wiring.
But after seeing this I started putting the parts together. Got a nice Speedometer thats brand new and I am trying to get this kick ass tach.
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=5400&hl=vdo++sensor++cv++speedo
i can help with wiring aswell.
called Powertech about the car, they said to check my coil for 12V first. The plugs werent wet when i pulled them, but i think that the coil is prob fine. Maybe a loose wire or something goin on there.
Bring it down. The tie rods can be done no problem. Do you have a tie rod end remover or forks? Also what kind of ignition system and coil are you running?
Forgot to mention that i can get the car rolling in a straight line, but you will need a professional allignment to get it right.
sounds great Leo!
i dont know what i did with my pickle fork. Been looking for it and i think the mechanic fairy took it from me.
As far as ignition system, im not really sure, haha. I think its an 009.
I just did a lil checking over on some stuff that i could do by myself. Took off the covers for the carbs and checked to see if the thing was spitting fuel. Nope. Fuel pump was running pretty loud. Checked the tank, nothing. Bone dry. All that with the gauge saying that i still have about 1/4 tank.
Hopefully once i put some gas in the car the thing will want to start pretty easily and be running ok enough for me to get it down there on Sunday.
_billy
need clarification. giving that there is only one lift, limited time (4-5 hrs), and anthony doesn't want any 914's left behind. can we do both projects on the same day.
YES!!!! I also plan to adjust the valves on my bus.
It can all be done as long as you don't stand next to me with a cigarette in one hand and a bag of cheetos in the other.
You gonna be able to get them cold enough to adjust after driving there?
When you getting that 1.8 back together?
do we have a start time yet Ray?
I will try my best to be there right on time to that. Hopefully i will get the car all set for its first "real" drive in about 8 yrs! today.
_billy
got the car to start!
took it for a ride for a lil today just to get the feel of any other problems. Seems like my back brakes arent working after the adjustment. I think i need to tighten them up a lil. if i cant get to them tonite or tomorrow morning, can we do a quick adjustment???
_billy
Good morning Mr. Sunshine. Someone pour sour milk into your frosted flakes this morning? Not like you to be so defeated prior to starting the job. Not to worry. I once put a set of bus heads on my engine by mistake and the thing ran better than a 6. Failure is just part of the process of illimination.
Now I'm going to get some breakfast so I can get there early and try to get a start on things. With all this SHIET on order for today it looks like I will be working on my own car in the driveway at home in the dark
great! car feels amazing!!! its like driving a new car again!!!
Thanks Ray for the shop
thanks Leo for showing me how to do it and dealing with the bent side.
Really appreciate what ya guys did for me...
Hope everyone enjoyed the endless supply of cookies. Pete, well we're not sure what you were on but we know that you were having fun doin whatever it was you were doin. haha.
_billy
...glad it worked out Billy. Leo did a great job
Haven't seen Pete that happy-go-lucky in weeks.
Hope to hear from Richie that he had some heat on the way home.
I'm happy for a few reasons:
1. My car is pretty much square for the year & then I'll have plenty of time to get it all proper by the time spring rolls around.
2. I ran 20 miles yday averaging 8mins per mile - which makes my goal of a 3:30 marathon (2 weeks away) very attainable.
3. I get to quit my job in 5 weeks, then I get to work on side projects til grad school starts at the end of next summer.
4. I finally get to start helping work on your guys cars. It feels good be able to pay you guys back - even if today I was only helpful on chef's car.
Billy - thanks for the cookies!
yes it seems to have heat. got warm and toasty pretty quick, then got stuck in traffic for 2 hrs, pretty much from giant stadium to my front door. oh and it backfires now on decelation. my car does not like to be fixed. thanks to everyone for their help.
Yes, Billy, thanks for the cookies and nice car!
Rich, good to hear you have heat for the winter.
All, nice to see you guys again.
Keith
sorry i came so late today guys...it was fun to at lease hang out and see how the tie rods are done. i was also great to see pete in such high spirits, and thank god i didnt get a whiff of that flatulence.
ill try and make it earlier for the next session..which is hopefully soon...when all of your running and more important cars have all had some work done..maybe i can squeeze my car in for a session
i had fun for sure after i left. Drove the car all last night and put a total of 154 miles on yesterday.
Now i just need to get them brakes adjusted properly and i will feel totally confident with my car again!!!
Whens the next session? or drive?

ray needs to strip down the green one before it rusts out in then snow. i think that should be the next all day project.
The green cars shell is worth while... Strong to quite strong... Do the tires hold air (ie, for towing)? I'll find out this w'end how easily the beetle tows the 914. If it works out easily, I could see myself towing the green car to Buffalo once the winter passes then doing a parts swap from my orange car...
It doesn't look like the restoration design parts I ordered will be @ Hooker's Welding til mid week, then I need to tow the orange car to Buffalo on Friday - prob will not leave enough time to get the longs welded up...
Who knows...
-pt
im all for stripping the green one
that would be alot of fun to help tear down the greener.
Ray if your striping the green car I will gladly take the back pad. $50
Of course I am gonna strip it down as I mentioned.
Ordered some gauges. I think I am gonna go ahead and get the paspeedo triple gauge. That thing is so sweet. I also ordered fiberglass hoods and new door panels. MIne are nice but got speaker holes cut in em.
I'm thinking I am gonna order some GTS seats as well. The recaros are nice but look completely out of place. Someone is gonna have to show me how to take those things out. Not sure which is wider though the nurburgring or the lemans.
forget that fiberglass stuff. Get the CF! its where its at
carbon fiber..would be optimum yes...but 'spensive
na, CF rules all.
even if you do take a crap and lose that extra weight, its all worth it!
so we doin any 914 time this weekend?
My car is back at Powertech for some issues, so the car prob wont be around, but i can come and help out.
im not gonna be around this weekend, have "junkpile wars" to do at school...$1000 first place cash prize =]
putting mine to sleep this week. thinking of pulling the engine soon maybe start next weekend. car will be in hazlet n.j., near keansburg, by sandy hook, any one up for a good ole fashioned up on jackstands engine drop?
I'll be towing my car up to Buffalo this weekend. Turns out Billy (welder) has persuaded me to throw in the towel on that car's chassis. It might be worth saving but would require a lot of welding/fabricating know how and a lot of time.
I had been thinking of swapping all the parts off my orange car onto Ray's green machine and this episode @ the welder's has pushed me over the edge... I bought Rays green machine. I'll be taking it to Buffalo in the next month or so (hooray for tow bars & a new hitch on the Beetle!). The entire car will be stripped down to bare chassis, painted, and built up using the parts from the orange car.
I expect it to be completed sometime in the spring (prob by May).
Am I crazy? Foolish?
how are you going to do the frame repair?
Pete, definitely think you made a good choice, although it always sucks to lose another 914. Curious though what the front trunk looks like in your car, and the area on the firewall where the shiftrod, brake lines, gas lines, etc pass through. My 914 needs help there, and if you are scrapping that car, maybe we can work out a deal.
Also, I have a flat tow towbar for a 914 already mounted to a scrap bumper, unbolt your old bumper, bolt this one on, and away you go. I don't foresee needing it in the near future, you are welcome to borrow it if you want.
-Chris
WOW! Good call Pete. Not that i really knew what your orange car looked like underneath.
So is the green car getting stripped down here or up in Buffalo? And are you keeping all the parts from the green car or is Ray?
whoever might be keeping the parts, i think i need the bottom seatbelt buckles. Where the belt attatches to the middle tunnel. And possibly that stock fog light switch.
let me know.
Thanks,
Billy
Looks like I have the weekend off Man it has been a while. Gonna spend some time with the family. Maybe next Sat we can all try to make the run to RacerChris's shop and show him some support. Looks like it could be a good time.
I just checked with the better half and she said I can go
Glad we got everything sorted last Sunday. It was a productive day.
I spoke with Pete yesterday. He was on the road towing the 914 behind the bettle to Buffalo. He said the DLee setup was working like a dream.
yeah i would really like to get up to Chris's for an alignment.
Dont know if i will get the car back from Powertech in time. The car wasnt running good at all earlier in the week and started running on only 3 cyls. So hopefully its nothing crazy and i will have it back by the weekend.
_billy
Chris - the area you describe is shit on the orange car. My feet get wet when it rains b/c the area around the m/c & pedals is uber rusty.
Ray and I worked out a deal on the green car complete & "as is" less a few pieces he had just bought new like the rear calipers, injectors, etc.
My thoughts are to keep the green machine as complete as possible so as to ensure everything is on hand when the time comes to properly put it all back together.
After the green car is torn down & put back together the left over pieces will be given away/up for sale.
My goal is to have the green car on the road by May.
BTW, like Leo said - the tow bar set up kicks booty! The orange car is in the garage in Buffalo & has it's ass end up on jack stands waiting to have the engine dropped. When it goes back in it will likely get dressed w/carbs. A set of Dellorto DRLA 40mm's are on the basement workbench waiting to be rebuilt.
The FI will have to get prepped for another engine.
Giddy up, big plans are underway!
Pete- I don't think we are talking about the same area of the car, I'm talking about the area in the engine compartment where the fuel lines, shift rod, etc, pass through, is that rusty? How about the trunk floor? Let me know.
Good luck with the green car!
-Chris
Yep a run up to Chris' place would be pretty cool. Sounds like we got possibly 3 people heading up there. Any others?
I'm more concerned with the location of the opening for the shift rod. This area was rusted out on my car, and a PO decided to "fill" the rust holes with shitty globs of stick welding rod . . . literally looks like bird crap. My concern is that if the hole through which the shift rod passes has been altered, deformed, etc, this car will never shift correctly. And thats the last thing a 914 needs, more of a mess in the shifting department. Meh, maybe I can sort it out with some measurements off of another car. We will see how far I am along if/when you start parting out that orange one.
Anyone have any projects planned for the weekend of the 11th? I'm going to be up that way and will probably have some free time that Sunday. Certainly would be willing to lend a hand.
-Chris
so whos all goin for a ride today with the nice weather?
My car is still at Powertech, not sure if they even got a look at it yet. Goin to call them later and see if i can get the car back.
_billy
when are people going up to chris's? id like to be a passenger
I'd like to get out to MovieTime at some point to get the green car prepped for the trip to Buffalo at the end of the month. Prepped = put on tow bar brackets: takes ~ 30mins.
Upto Chris's on Sat. but not sure what time everyone is goin to meet up. You can ride with me if you like, but not sure im goin to have my ride back yet.
Pete - let me know if you head down to the shop. I live about 10 min away and can come help if you need.
well kids. taking the 914 out for one last pleasure drive on what looks like the last nice day. cleaned out the garage in n.j. and it's going to sleep for the season. hope to pull the engine soon, send the tranny to dr. evil for a rebuild and wait for leo's 2.0. maybe tear down the 1.7 and rebuild that one in the warmth of my basement. gonna miss the little pain in the ass.
