VBWS, Virginia Breakfast Wrench and Suds
O.K. Here's what we are planning for Saturday Nov. 4.
Morning - Breakfast and Tech Session / Afternoon - Suds and Whatever
7:30AM ... Meet at the Amphora Diner in Herndon for Breakfast.
8:30AM ... Off to MATSYS (roots garage) for a Teener TECH & TIG Session
a) tear down a 1.8L "for the hell of it"
Anybody who has a Teener part or tool or whatever to
make or fix that requires welding can bring it with
them. As long as it's mild steel, stainless, aluminum, or copper
.
Noonish .... Breakout the grill (dogs, burgers and chips).
1PM ...... Back to the Tech Session, cooler with Suds.
It's kinda like what Jim Kelly and I normally do on the weekend except a few more teeners around this time.
I was also thinking we could drive up to PA Friday night and tow EVIL's car
back to Sterling and get it running for him on Saturday as well!
Just kidding Evil...... .
Everyone's welcome, all genders, let me know if your comin' and I'll keep a list of attendees going on this post!
tell me again why I moved to VA beach
Terry,
Certainly you can make it to Sterling!
Come up Friday night and stay at my place if you like.
That way you won't miss the early morning breakfast.
Did you get those new calipers mounted, bled, and stopping!
rebuilt calipers mounted
new front brake lines installed (rubber and hard)
new 19mm master cylinder installed
brakes 90% bled - I can lock up the right tires. I should be able to finish it all up pretty soon.
I'd love to come, but will have to pass this time. We'll have to plan to meet at your place in the near future :-)
Great idea - I lilke sxx, dxxxx, rxxx and rxxx and - oh yeah - 914's : )
I've also been know to drink a beer or two while indulging in fatty meats : ))
I gotta give the extra curricular activities some thought - hummmmmmmm?
Jim
doesn't get any better....
AW crap, the timing is good, teh distance sucks ass, and my car doesnt work. I may just have to go This will be the day after my big renal exam (the one many fail and have to repeat). I aint working on anyones car, though. I think it is time for some east coast tough love where I start making ya'll fix yer own damn cars
Hey Root, I should have my holy 914/6 heat exchangers in my posetion by then. Wanna try to see about welding them up and or fabricating some new ones?
If someone wants to come up and tow my car down, I would not stop them
Sounds like a plan fella and you can count me in.
Just got home from hockey practice!
Great to see some interest coming in already.
Set November 4th aside for VbWs! My wife's doin' the cooking so I can
Evil, I love tiggin' SS. Do you know what type 304, 316, or special alloy?
It's always good to have a test part (setup / tuneup piece). So if you can get me the gage thickness and type SS that would be very helpful. Don't worry 'bout the weld supplies those are on-the-house (I got plenty of argon, tunsten electrodes, cup insulators, and filler rod).
Oh!? by-the-way what's a "big renal". I think I might have one of those, myself.
They are not SS or I would not need to have them welded. I was pondering making some SS boxes....well talk. As they stand, though, they are the oreiginal steel and in need of repair so I dont freeze my ass off this winterish season should the thing actually work
O.K. so mild steel, all rusty right? We'll need some similar guage patches then right?
Just bring 'em we'll figure out something, no problem.
Make sure you study HARD, so you pass your exam GOOD!
I'll be down here in Virginia
Hey Scotty b, did we meet at ECC?
Huh. Sterling VA is only about 100 miles or so from me. I wonder if I am free on the 4th.
Of course my welding project would require bringing the rotesserie...
Zach
WOO-WEE! Jim thanks for the 6AM Bump.
What are you doing up at 6AM on a Saturday?
Practicing for the November 4th 7:30 AM breakfast maybe?
I have yet to make it to any event, maybe because I fear what may happen to me ............in my ..........Volvo
SCHMIT Scott that ain't nothing, Ive been sporting my companie's weld tuck for a year now.LOL Not hot with the babes since the car is still at the paint shop and with some luck, all winter long.
I have no pride to get in the way of my huge...large...big....decent...good...alright relatively okay 914 monthly budget.
Ya buddy, I'll be there and I can tig pretty well. I have A36 filler rod for mild steel if you wanna try that. I guess you have the l308 filler rod for stainless, just guessing but stainless requires a triple shield or high helium gas mix if you don't have it. Argon is good for mild steel and aluminum. I will also have my stick welder and if needed I'll bring my little Lincoln mig 110 flux core deal if you want? That way everyone can have a try for themselves and have fun with it.
I'll be there.
Great man .... glad you can make it!
Here's what I have at the shop:
- my "old as me" oxy/acetylene
- Miller Dynasty 200 TIG / Stick
- 2 MIGs (Lincoln and Century)
- "old as me" 200 AMP Craftsman Stick
I'll make up a bunch of test coupons so everyone can try their hand.

I checked my event log, and I can't make it unless a camping trip falls through that weekend.
Sorry.
Zach
75% certain I will be there. I'm having a small roof leak/squirrels in the attack crisis that must be resolved first. I'll bring an extra welding helmet or 2 if needed.
Its on!!! I'll get some drops to work with.
Wow, lots of welding aparatasssssees.
Hi fellas,
First post here. I'm in Arlington and I don't have a 914 (yet!). Still, I'd love to come out for a few hours to meet some of the locals. I can bring a few 6 packs of sam adams if you guys are willing to entertain me.
I'm a newbie in all respects but have gotten interested in the 914. From what I've read here they seem like fun, certainly unique cars. But before I start getting serious about buying one I figure I should see a few in person!
of course you are welcome. Stick arround, read old posts, ask plenty of questions and learn everything you can
I probably won't be able to go, have to head down south to pick up some furniture and a chainsaw from the in-laws.
So far here's who I've got-

Don't forget bring a weldable broken something and we'll fix it at VbWs!
The /6 heat exchangers showed up today (thanks Mark!) and should provide the crew with hours of frustration, I mean FUN!
I know a bit about ulcers, BUT not more than a practicing physician. At best, my current medical knowledge is best used to explain things in plain english and to give people good ideas as to where to look for more info or what to ask the doc.
A quick tid bit for you to search on wikipedia: Helicobacter pylori (SP?) A very common cause of peptic ulcers. They will likely put him on antibiotics to mitigate such a bug should it be there. If it is healing on its own then they may leave it alone. We can talk more on Sat, I gots to go learn more about how pee is made and how the body deals with electrolyte imballances.

I'll try to make it. The teener has no heat (plus the carbs hate the cold) so I'll see if I can swipe the wifes boxster.
Im going to look at a pair of porsches for a friend (before noon) so I wont be able to make it to roots. Breakfast is always good though. I might be able to stop on the way back? Can someone email me directions or an address?
Tnx,
SMD
could I get a phone no. or Roots address? I probably won't make it in time for breakfast and will have to show up at the house.
There is no way that I am gonna be down there before 11am, will we still be goofing with the welders and such? My HEs are in and I am wanting to fixem.
I'm planning to come out and meet you guys for breakfast etc but I have to get back to arlington for lunch duties around noon or 1 (girlfriend's sister is in town...).
-Mike
Good to hear. I'm sad to miss breakfast, but believe it or not no less than 3 people PMed me and offered to putme up for the night so I could make it in the morning What a great bunch! I will be carpooling with Brian again so that Noel can use our car so no can do. Probably leave at 8am get there 10:30-11. I was trying to see if there was some way to look as a Saturn while I was down there (the one I want is like 30 mi away), but it is not lookng feasable so I may have to drive back down on Sun if the dealership is open. It sucks living outin the middle of no where (and having one working vehicle)
I may be able to swing by just after noontime, so if someone can PM me...
thanx!
-bob
Bob! Sup man? Look forward to seeing you.
Member 109 and 37 posts? You are a quiet man
Does anyone have an old clutch disk that they could donate at Roots? I left my other one at Matts and his house is not on the way.
Thanks!
I have one I can bring...
yeah, I don't post much, mostly a looong time lurker.. owned the '73 since '82 and the six since ~93?
-bob
EVIL, Just in case your interested. There's a CarMAX and a Ferrari/Maserati dealership right around the corner from my shop.
I haven't looked but there may be a clutch disk here somewhere too.
Thanks guys. I ahve been scouring CarMax as well as other sites. There is 1 on car max worth looking at, but it is near Baltimore. Maybe I need to expand my search region.
The disk I will need will be destroyed to weld a rod ont eh end of so that I may have a tool with which to hold tranny cranks with (no dirty jokes ).
OH - you meant transaxle
Don't know what my schedule is for Sat and if I'm not working I think I have a Bday party to go to ( wifes friends kid). So here is a Thurs morn
WHEW - rubber glove - what a relief.
JUST ONE QUESTION - why is the box of nitrate digit protectors always full
Because latex feels more real?
O.K. so here's who I have for breakfast

weather looks like it's going to be great!

Root,
Sniff, sniff, I replied back on page 3. Why doesn't anyone notice ME?
I'll make it to breakfast, duck out for a few hours, and then make it to your place by ~noon. Can you plz PM/email me directions and a phone #. Thanks!
Looking forwad to seeing SOME of you again (That DrE guy creeps me out)

Well now, this sounds like lots of fun. I'm trying to entice "Zymurgist" (aka Ken or "Ace Mechanic") to come on down for this... he needs a 914 fix, and I've got a 914 that needs fixin' (or adjusting, anyway...) How do we get to the location of the 914 shenanigans, ie: Roots Garage??
I PM'd the address to the shop for a few who asked.
here it is- This event is at my business location where we are headed after Breakfast (Lot's of space, tools, and food!):
MATSYS, Inc.

Hey guys,
That was SO MUCH FUN today... all those beautiful welding sparks and cool tools. Babydoll wants you all to know how much she appreciated the attention, too - she brought me home safe n' sound without bucking (the new TPS switch seems to working!) and without stalling out at lights... in fact, she's idling fast (about 2400 rpm's). Adjusting the idle is easy, right? How do I do that?
Thanks Dr. Evil and Bob for the lessons - hey, thanks everybody! When's the next get-together, I'll bake something good again (maybe with chocolate this time...)
Caroline
Hope you all had a good time. I thought about you as I was finishishing my work ~4 today.
Hopefully, I will be able to make the next meet.
Zach
good time was had by all - lots of sparks flying - Evil's 6 HE's got repaired by JPB and Rod - thye may have worm out a tig and a mig in one day - Babydoll got some love by the Dr. and his friends - one jack post got replaced - lots of things learned - and best off all - everyone enjoyed my meat : ) - as I was the BBQ technician.
Damn Jim what kind of looser are you? It's 8:30 on Sun and you're hanging out here? I had a great time yesterday and really enjoyed meeting you guys. The good (?) doctor wasn't nearly as painful as I had imagined and I can walk fairly normally this morning!Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks to our hosts and all who attended this cool gathering and was glad to see some new faces. I will get the pipes to Thermal Tech Coatings and try to get a deal for the Doctor's headers. If anyone else has some pipes to ceramic, a group deal may be the ticket for saving a few dineros. If anyone needs any welding, I will be glad to be of assistance at the next gathering.
Thanks again and looking forward to the next one.
Sounds like a good time was had by all
I'll try to make the next one for sure
FYI, babydoll has a bad Aux air valve that was causing a high idle at the ECC. We disconnected and plugged it to keep her drivable during the summer.
Lets see the photos from the days work.. I bet most of you can no longer run for any political office once these photos get posted
got some pic's of the day... thanks for coming everyone!

Oh so that was YOUR golf tee huh
BTW Baydoll has lost her box. It seems the Crane unit had a pretty erratic fire on no. 2 and no fire on no. 3. After Mike and Bob put together a new points unit she was up and running like a chump errr champ. Carnage from 4 distributors was left behind
Nope not my Tee.. I used grape Huba-buba.
So are you saying the crane unit crapped out? The unit was new from PP a week before the ECC. E-mail me with the scoop and I can get ahold of Pelican parts.
it was neat seeing evil, bob, scottyb, ken et al, fixing babydoll in the parking lot. alot of experience there. thanks to jimkelly for the part to mount my ECU that i have been searching for forever.
BIG THANKS to ROD and JPB! You guys did a lot of work on my /6 HEs and I totally appreciate it. It felt wierd having someone else do all the work for me.
Favorite quote by far!: "So there I was with my hand flat against this hookers chest, holding her down on the couch..." Jim Kelly
Scotty you look nothing like Wilferd. It was fun picking on you I hope you become a regular at these meetings.
Bob, as always a pleasure.
Steven, I'll be in touch about the machinist books.
I am still tired....need sleep.....learning about poop making in the morning
Oh come on - I am sure all you guys have a story like this ???
I'd like to say that the quote was taken out of context but can't
I would like to make one correction - please replace hookers with hooker's
though I would like to note that no money exchanged hands
'Teeners at root's, and esp. Root: Yes, good event, good folks, nice 914s, and LOTS of good sharing of info and labor. I got up the courage to cut/grind/chisel off a jack point, and the good luck to find a pro welder (who was that masked man?--welder's mask) to get it back to 100%. And I got a look inside the long beam, which was in verrry nice shape. Acuna matata, as the meerkat says. And I got up some courage/ momentum, bought myself a Ryobi grinder w/cutoff wheel, and a 2 lb. reel of fluxed wire for my Lincoln welder, so now I can do the other side myself (it isn't as bad as the one we did. Now if the rain would only end! -Chris H. (Pinetree Porsche)
