914World.com _ 914World Garage _ /6 vs. /4

Posted by: SirAndy Nov 10 2006, 07:27 PM

alright, here it is. the official /6 vs. /4 bashing thread! beerchug.gif

here's your chance to be heard. (or hurt)
give it your best shot.
take off the gloves.
no punch too low.
no rules (except no porn, no politics and no religion)(puppies are welcome).
name calling is a plus.
get down and dirty.
tell us how you really feel.

i'll start:

- /4 have a better low end torque curve, thus they're better suited for AX
- /6 have more high end rpm power, thus they're better suited for the big track
- a used /6 can be had for cheap, a used /4 can be had for cheaper
- a /6 rebuild into something nice will cost more than you car will ever be worth
- a raby /4 is expensive, but at least you know what you're getting for your money
- most /6 conversion seem to be done "on the cheap". cheap motor, cheap parts, cheap owners = poor quality

I already feel "dirty". It'll clean off though.

Care to field a guess of how many a/x and track days on this "filth mobile"?
Not including this Sunday and Dec 10th.

and that proves what? confused24.gif

i'd rather not be caught driving behind you when that 20lbs wooden board you call a "splitter" works his way lose and cuts through someones windshield. but that's for another thread ... smile.gif

refresh my memory again, you paid how much for your used /6? $1000? is that what they're going for these days? how does it compare to a /4 of similar displacement? did you not brake your cheap "quick-six" motor mount bar?

OK, IMHO easy answers. Have driven 6 914's. The 2.0 4 is the best driver. Low end torque, not much shifting, good economy, not a lot of moving parts. Not much power so you don't need to 'update' everything.

6's are sexier, but stock early small displacement motors don't offer little improvement over the 4 except on longer tracks. And the sound.

I've driven Dekmans 3.0, arguably the best all around car here. Amazing handling, brakes, sound, looks. I love it, but it's 'busier' to drive than my 4. Even on the track, more shifting, more everything, much higher limits.

Z's 3.2 is also amazing. Great low end torque, lots of HP, scary fast. Feels like it needs more tire, brakes, suspension. Putting that FI motor in Dekman's car could be the ultimate 914. But it wouldn't put a much bigger grin on my face Sunday mornings at Our Lady of Mulholland than my 2.0.

Suzi has enough suspension, tires, and brakes that work well together. If I were just a better driver....

Posted by: jwalters Nov 10 2006, 07:57 PM

chowtime.gif Oh yeas, let the anarchy begin:

A six should be installed only in a chassis specifically designed for a six and numbered as such from the fatherland factory. Period.

Any person who willfully swaps out his stock delivered four cylinder engine for a six openly displays their complete lack of manhood and can be seen as having no "sack". For to truly have balls of brass a real, defined man shall build upon that which is bestowed upon him by the factory for said display of manhood. To take the "cheap" and "easy" way out in order to dominate in ones chosen field by installing a six cylinder engine shall heretofor be known as a "WUSSY" For those not in the know of what terminology is "wussy" I shall explain. The "wus" is slang from american ebonics known as "Wimp"

Definition of "WIMP" : To completely lack manhood, yellow spined, hunted, to be destoyed by neighbors 6 year old girl, non-red blooded, absent of indeginous thought.

The second portion of "Wussy", another americanized ebonics venture known as "Pussy"

Definition of "Pussy" : known in the great americanized culture of a womans vagina, or, "PUSSY" This term is only partly taken from "Pussy Cat" with the "cat" dropped off. The term "Pussy" is a very neutral, if not nurturing term of american slang known as the " Kitty". However, when used in the context of not referring to a womans holiest of holy's, the term "Pussy" carries new weight as such to : define what was once, could have been, or was born and yet never matured into, a "MAN".

Heretofor a new manlaw is decreed: In accordance with all orders of the right of passage of manhood a new law it is decreed: To be completely and utterly so weak and of non-matured decent, manlaw #4675 is set forth as follows to refer to said male gender as a "WUSSY" , further defind as "Part wimp, and mostly Pussy".

Z, you sanctimonious sack of shit! I admit I'm not fast, but I do stay ahead of you. KMA.gif

We were talking about cars, not drivers. I'm saying that same driver on Mulholland or a short track/AX would at least as fast in my 2.0 as he would in he would in your 3.2 in its present condition. And would do it with less shifting, better economy, lower cost, and not break as much of a sweat. Grin factor?? In the eye of the beholder.

Of course, you could add another $10k in tires, brakes and suspension to your car and whip my ass. You could be as fast as an automatic 996 (at the same price). beerchug.gif

I've been racing a 4 for 8 years. I want a 6. But, I also want new tile, a bigger patio, new windows in every room, and a new garage.
I'm sick of the finicky 4 breaking pretty regularly, I'm racing a damned VW van engine for God's sake, what was I thinking?
So, I really want a 6, but I'll really miss kicking the dog crap out of guys with nicely prepped SC's and Carreras, them with $30K, $40K, 50K in their cars and me with less than $10K in mine.
They come over sometimes and ask what sized engine I have, I say 2.1.
They say 2.1? I haven't heard of a 6 that size.
I say, it's a 4.
They don't like it. At all.

A new company called "Exhaustive Solutions" will (hopefully) be up and running by end of next year with a range of products for T4. Both in absolute genious application and affordability.

Posted by: TROJANMAN Nov 11 2006, 09:05 AM

I don't know who this JAKE guy is that you keep bashing, but let's do the simple math..............

according to a 914 "God" a fresh 3.0 motor can be had for $4k
That is Dirt cheap

According to a former disenfranchised Big 4 seeker, a big 4 "with all the bells and whistles" runs $18k

hmmmmm idea.gif

The Big 4 has no real proven track record of longevity, yet.

Even if the "used" 3.0 needs a rebuild, It probably has 40-50k miles left in it, and a rebuild will only be $7-9k. Still cheaper than the Big 4, and with a proven record of reliability. Not to mention the fact that the used 6 will probably have 5-6 years of drive time before it needs a rebuild, b/c how many of us (with performance engines) drive our cars more than 10k miles a year.

So.........for my money, I would choose the six.
Do i dislike 4's? Heck no! I just can't afford a bigger one.
If prices and durability were equal.........i'd probably take the 4, but their not

That opinion is worth about 2 pennies smile.gif

Posted by: MW 914 Nov 11 2006, 09:06 AM

I have know idea which one is better. I will say however that after converting my 4 to a 6, I have zero interest in driving a 4. Make of it what you will. burnout.gif

Well, according to the "God"
$8k for a small 2.4 six (see the voltron thread) and install is really exspensive, so based on his math, it should be cheap. smile.gif

Sir Andy, this had to be asked so the truth would come out and we can speak our minds on power, performance and the money issues of our engine choices. There are many good people out here which won't speak a harsh word about anything and I commend them for their respect. I also commend those who can tactfully use the english language in a way which can ridicule in a playfull way thus achieveing the same result. I for one like to speak entertaining blurbs which may be interpreted as harshness by those who are perpetually stimulating my testicles boldblue.gif boldblue.gif

4,6,8,and for the one who sports a cumulative 10 my answer is symple. This club NEEDS more reliable driving cars. I know we all have our money issues but it also sucks to hear of club members not having a drivable 914. The greatest and most important challenge we will face in the future is getting more of these cars on the road. This club has a great wealth of quality people and infomation which can get anyone well on their way just being here on the site. I can only wish that there will be a continual and more hands on effort as a collective to help others to be more active, involved and ultimately on the road. beerchug.gif

Nope, Now I have an engine that is more of a PITA to work on and far more expensive than I can afford should I, and I suppose I will, break it. I really do not find the time to do what I do. this is why my car is still not running and why my other vehicles are broken. No time, no money, no luck. Looking forward to Thanksgiving, X-mas and spring break to fix stuff. All of my free time is reserved for customers at teh moment.

I' ve logged more miles in a 914/4 than most of the people on this board, at least 80,000 miles and maybe close to 100,000.
Haym, there's an idea for a pole, how many miles have you driven in a 914? We doan have enuff poles.

Much of those miles were in a stock 1.7, some was in a turbo 2,0, some was with a chebby engine. From stock buggy power to big power.

I prefer a six. I knew that the first time I rode in a 914/6. There was no looking back.

BTW, spending $5k to $7k to rebuild a six? Only if it is a total basket case or you take it to a dealer or a ?????.
I went through my 3 liter six for about $1100. Of course it didn't need much besides head studs, everything was near perfect. That should have been expected as it was barely broke in with about 105,000 miles on it.
I took some scotch brite to the cylinder bores to clean em up and that's all they needed.

You are saying a type4 being about 277Lbs is better than a six which is, did you mean to say 400lbs+? If so granaded T4s are the schmit and thats a new one for me since many claim the six is the real deal. biggrin.gif

Posted by: iamchappy Nov 11 2006, 09:41 PM

I am just being sarcastic...

My turbo 914 when it had 350hp would make most people wet their pants.

Qarl pulled a groin muscle and had fear in his eyes
when I gave him a ride.

Qarl drives some pretty hot cars and it scared him.

Try that with a type 4...I had a 2.9 type 4 once, it no way was anything close to
the driving experience of a big turbocharged six.

I dont dislike type 4 powered 914's I just dont consider them high performance.

And I believe my car is about 200lbs at most heavier than a type 4 but also has over 350 more horsepower now.

Hey Chappy,

Somehow...I believe you'll have no trouble with a type 4...with 480 HP and driving skill (I remember you saying you have road raced cars & go-karts)....you'll no doubt be a menace. Judas Priest!...w/ 480 HP, I don't think I'll want to race you.

The Porsche 911 was the first car I fell in love with at about age 10. Lots of them cruising around the Sewickley, Pa area where I grew up. I became a Porsche guy.

Then Porsche developed the 914. At 15, I got to ride several times in a 73 or 74 914 and fell in love with the 914.

Shortly after I talked up the 914 to a friend and he absolutely bashed the 914 as a VW, not a real Porsche (NARP). Kinda soured me a bit on 914s.

The 914/6 was the real deal as far as being as real a Porsche as possible. But not many around.

Fast forward to now, and I'm finally a Porsche owner. 914-4 that is. Two of them. Total of 8 cylinders between 2 cars. Need more HP.

How more HP? /6? Massive TIV? V6? V8? Turbo? Many options. Some more expensive than others. Who cares how the HP comes as long as it comes.

One of the things a /6 does for a 914 is move it closer to a being real Porsche. There's a love affair with the /6 that's intoxicating. If you want that /6 Porsche feel & sound, just do it.

Get your HP where you want for the $$ you want to spend.

They stopped making 914/6's cuz they DIDN'T SELL. They sat on the docks waiting to a smuck to buy them here in the USA with that wimpy 110hp six.

Posted by: mikez Nov 13 2006, 07:56 AM

They didn't sell because they were priced right below the 911...VW's new CEO fucked them on the body pricing as they controlled the contract with Karmann......the original handshake agreement between Porsche and VW wasn't honored.

Posted by: iamchappy Nov 13 2006, 09:25 AM

Bill,
90cc Mcculloch running Nitrobenzene oil 2 stroke said to of been clocked at 165 MPH but I think closer to 140's BIR straight 110 single engine( front end got light on me once and lifted the front few inches, that was scary)The number panel on the front was my only downforce. Enduro Kart was geared real low as I weighed nothing back then but it still burned a lot of clutch getting started. I was to young to compete with the twin engine setup but ran them in practice events.
You can understand why I eventually ended up with a 914 turbo monster.

I sold it to the sister of a boy with cancer for a few hundred bucks, It was his dream to have a Kart like this.

Many years later I saw it at a Minneapolis Custom car show.

I'm a little late to join the /6 vs. /4 debate. I say neither are any good. That is, aircooled Porsche 6 or VW type 4. They are old, and pretty much across the board have been outdone in the decades since they were originally designed.

Its like having a debate between vinyl record players and 8-track tape players. Sure they have that unique sound, but what good are they anymore really? (aside from the real purists)

For $15,000 you can probably make an 8 track sound pretty close to a good record player, and a $15,000 record player will probalby sound as good as or maybe better than a CD player. But at some point you ask, what would a $15,000 CD player sound like?

So I'm not going to debate which is better because I say they are both irrelevant.

agree.gif LP's are much more "rich" sounding.

Having trouble keeping them from skipping in my teener tho - sad.gif

Here's a good one... Listen to Money from Dark Side of The Moon on Vinyl, CD, and MP3. The sound of the coins dropping is really 'noise' and shows the surprising difference between these three technologies. Vinyl seems to capture it best, with CD sound very close, and MP3 sounding just horrible (by comparison).

Dude! biggrin.gif That is the pre-eminent album to listen to on LP! Not only the coins, but the nature reverb from being recorded in concert hall. Computers don't quite know what to make of it, and it all gets lost in translation -

"learning to fly and wolves" kick ass too -

Six versus four.... someone mentioned Dark side of the Moon, why don't we have a real debate, like is Pink Floyd really Pink Floyd without Roger Waters....

Because its not a debate. Pink Floyd ceased to exist after Roger Waters.

Yep. I would give em away.

I saw a pink floyd concert on TV recently, I don't think i would be able to stay awake for the whole show.
reminded me of Led Zepplin's "song remains the same" movie. I went to see it about 10 times at teh midnight showing when i was younger (much younger). i wass a big Zep fan, but I don't think i ever stayed awake through the entire show. It was just more piled higher and deeper. After 10 minutes you've seen it all, now you just get to sit there and see it a hundred more times. Kinda like a NASCAR race.
I don't use drugs tho. Maybe if I did it would be better.......
