I see quite a bit of lurkers out there, some of whom are long time members who may not have ever posted or posted just a few times.
We'd love to hear from you or see a pic of your project or finished ride.
C'mon.... please!
Alright...no pics, but I just dropped the motor and trans this weekend, stripped out the AC, and stripped the interior....On the list for the winter projects:
1- Long. rust repair
2- engine shelf rust repair (like DNHUNTs action)
3- New used euro spec 2.0 install
4- finish rollbar fabrication
5- shocks/monster front sway/tbars/springs/bushings/turbo tie rods, etc., etc.
6- 19mm M/C
7- clean, clean, clean......
Wow, when you don't detail all that is involved, the list looks short! Looking to make SCCA CSP killer AX'er out of it.....this should remove the car from the equation and the rest is up to the nut holding the wheel....
PS. Anybody have a solid front trunk floor left over from a sawzall party? Big hole when the AC condenser is removed.....
Don't post much, just finished a V8 sbc conversion and paint job and flares on a 914 that I've owned since 1984. I'll give it a try on posting some pictures.

Super nice car Bob! Thanks for posting pics!
The orange and tan combo is unique.
Yes, it's been awhile. I recently had the transmission out. The shift fork for fourth gear was off so that it would not stay in that gear. Tab Tanner did a great job fixing it. He also put on new bushings. All that coupled with the Rennshift = it is shifting great.
Tab also rebuilt and adjusted the carbeurators. It now runs great -- just in time for winter lay away.
Received my 914 hats. They're great! Good job Sean.
Very, very, very nice.
Andy
The wheels are Racing Dynamics for a 930 turbo. The rears are9.5/17 with a 20.5mm offset with a 255/40/17 tire and I'm using a 1" spacer on these for clearence on the inside. The fronts are 8.5 with a 13.5mm offset and a 235/40/17 tire with no spacer.
Ahh... the current state of 914 affairs for me. It has been about two years since we started the project. Sadly we have missed two events so far waiting for the car to be completed but in defense of Patrick Motorsports what looked like a rust spot about the size of a quarter ended up being cancer that had eaten into the depths of the little 914. While they were at it we plugged the antenna hole and the two front round side marker light holes. The metal work alone took as long as we had expected for the entire project.
The car itself is still at Patrick's waiting for final re-assembly. I think we are in the home stretch though. ALL the rust was found, removed, and replaced with good metal. Lots of fabrication work to repair the damage done by the A/C install and plumb in the oil cooler. There ended up being so much rust the tub ended up going down to bare metal. The paint was just finished and the pics i have seen look amazing, I can't wait to see it in person.
We are going for a classic stock look with a bit of extra oomph.... kind of a sleeper.
Here is a short list of things being done to the car during the process.
Jake Raby 2270 STILL waiting for install... it will breath life soon!
Transaxle just rebuilt by Patrick Motorsport's people.... no LSD too much $$$ already invested
GT front oil cooler with ducts to the wheel wells
Carrera suspension and 5 lug conversion
Fuchs 6" x 16" wheels
Front & rear deacklid swaped out for fiberglass
Front & rear bumper swapped out for fiberglass... I have found a place in Texas that does a 3-stage chrome look for auto fiberglass, we will see how it turns out. I saw it on a Buell motorcycle body and it looked like real chrome. Hopefully the bumpers will also turn out looking like chrome and not like silver paint
We are keeping heat for road-trips.
Of course we will be doing all of the bushings, rubber seals, roll bar vynil, carpets, etc. It's all that little stuff that really adds up. I am sure once it is back on the road we will find lots of other little things that we want to do tothe 914 but I think we will be starting from a good solid place.
I am hoping to have th car back before the end of the year but the way things have been going I am guessing that Feb. or March would be more realistic. When I do get the car back I will be sure to post pics of the finished beast here.
keep 'em coming guys!
Orange and tan... a factory color combo in '74!!! It looked great IMHO

My very first 914 was orange & tan. It ws a 1974 that I bought in 1992
Looks like I'm busted.... I've been lurking for a long while.
I don't have a 914, yet. I've been learning a lot from posts here and the Pelican forums.
I'm going to look at a '75 this weekend. The story goes that it ran great 2.5 years ago when he put a tarp over it. It has Webbers, though. I feel that's kinda sad, because I prefer EFI. One of the first things I hope to do, after I shake out the bugs, is put in electronic ignition. I do not care much for points.
It will need new tires, but I don't want to buy 2 sets. I agree that I may be nuts, but I actually like the looks of http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=4478&hl=. It reminds me of a TR6. I'm thinking about trimming the fenders just a bit, getting tires, then buying the proper flare.
I'm also wondering if I can cut out the rear trunk. I have no need for that storage area, and it may make tinkering back there a bit easier.
My lovely wife says I can buy it IF I can drive it home, and there's little to no rust in the battery area. We'll see...
Well... I should head back to the shadows and lurk. It's safer there. If I don't post, I can't be proven insane and a builder of hacked up 914's
orange car rocks! Looks like stevemalmz's avatar.

If you insist...
HI
Don't have any pictures right now, but it is an essentially stock 71 with 1.7L. Bought it in July. Previous owner hit a dog and front bumper is cracked and the front trunk is dented enough that the carpet cover for the spare tire won't fit. The body also has evidence of a VERY poorly repaired graffiti incident somewhere in its life on the hood.
The tranny has the usual vague shifting, but I have gotten pretty used to it over the past few months. I don't know exactly what all the suspension components are, but from what I can tell it is lower and stiffer than stock. No anti-sway bars. Tires are 205 rear and 195 front.
The engine runs great with the exception of a terrible idle (did somebody say idle) and poor running at part or no throttle. I should be pulling the intake apart soon as it seems to be a vacuum issue. Seeing as the idle speed screw does absolutely nothing I see this as the most likely reason. The vacuum lines are not the culprit.
Several problems would already be solved, but I don't have a garage right now and Montana can get a little cold under (or beside) a car. And yes, I do drive it in the snow and ice and all that crap. I figure one winter isn't going to make it all that much worse. The hell hole isn't great but could definately be worse. That will get serious consideration this summer.
The random electrical problems are interesting, but I haven't too hard a time living with them. I just sealed up the relay plate in the engine compartment since I didn't even think about it until it snowed and trying to start it up the starter wouldn't stop till I pulled the battery cable. That was an exciting morning.
The interior needs some things redone, but it works for now. My goal with the car is to keep it from going downhill for a few years while slowly fixing things and eventually fully restore it. It will take awhile but it is so much fun to drive. I would like to autocross it, but that won't be happening until I feel much more comfortable with its condition.
Basically, for $500 it was a really good deal for the condition it is in. It just fits so well. I absolutely love it, even with all the quirks.
But enough about the car, my name is David and I have a 914 problem.
Forgot to mention it is red.
Lurkers who have posted, thanks!
Those that haven't- SHAME ON YOU!
Please post, we want to get to know you.
i couldn't have done it without the vast amount of knowledge from all of you guys and the people on the pelican board.
THANK YOU ALL !http://www.porsche914.ca
Bob,
Nice car! Shame on you for not posting pics more often!
Wheels look very cool
cheers,
Jeroen
Greg D, that's nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
thanks
Ok, I'm a lurker. I'm working on a 1970 914-6 (9140430693) restoration up at Brad's place in Novato.
The body is at a body shop in Fresno getting restored. There was minor collision damage to the left front that I should have noticed before buying the car (didn't know Brad or any of the other guys back when I bought it). It was poorly repaired and needed to be redone. There's the usual rust and battery corrosion. The right suspension console is shot and will be replaced. No major accident damage and it passed the big-butt test so I guess it's worth restoring. I figure I saved an original 6er from oblivion.
I first brought it to a body shop in Novato which was taking forever and doing bondo sculpture rather than real metal finishing. So Brad and I took it to a real metal-finisher I know in Fresno who does mostly custom hot-rod jobs on 1940's cars. The same guy restored my 1954 Porsche 356 Cabriolet. (great work but he is expen$ive).
I had the seats redone by Autos International and they are ready to install. The suspension is being powder coated black. I'm now working on the engine. It was in boxes when I bought the car, but now is about 80% together. It now has 911E cams and 2.4 liter P&Cs. Soon I'll tackle the transmission and hopefully have both engine and tranny done when the car comes back from the body shop. I've got loads of pictures and will post them on the BBS when I finally get broadband. (Brad posted a picture of the body on the rotisserie a while back).
Mikey
Mikey,
I've seen your interior bits. Your seats look very nice!
Strip it to a bare tub.
cut and weld in a rear clip.
grind and sand the rust.
Exploring my hell hole.
Undo the wiring the PO did to the starter system.
v8 conversion
Somehow find a 915 tranny.
Oh and learn to weld.
Kinda funny how I went from just wanting a completely stock 914 to wanting to stuff a v8 in it.

Well, I am a newbie on this board but not to 914's. Some of you probably know me from Pelican's site and some of the So. Cal runs. Here is my collection and a few others that have been past down to a friend. The yellow one is my driver, I am in the process of building a 2270 with a SCAT hi lift cam, straight cut cam gears, 45 Dellorto's and so on. It is a fully "S" optioned car and handles great. I bought it for $1600.00 and it was a mess. Replaced the factory tan interior with a complete black interior, fixed some really bad dents all over the car. I am proud to say I used no Bondo on the car in repairing it. I painted it in my driveway, the bugs really like yellow for some reason. I will be color sanding and reshooting it in spring. The engine will be going back in over the next 2 weeks. The other car, my pride and joy to be, is a 74 Chalon conversion. I am currently converting it over to a 911 front suspension, Volvo 240 brakes, 22mm front sway bar and factory rear sway bar. 165 pound progressive springs and a 350 Chevy small block. It has a ways to go yet but I have a dream. The red car belongs to a friend and we picked it up as a parts car. It was way to clean to cut up so we built a 2.6 liter big bore for it and he now drives it. Needs sway bars but it is way powerful. The other car is a 75 I picked up for $1200.00 a few years back that I wanted to make into the Chalon I had always dreamed of. Things happen and deals come along and now it is also my friends car. He wants to do a V-8 also. That's my story and I am sticking to it.

And last but not least, the beast of an engine that will be going into the yellow car.

I guess I am a Lurker, so there. I am AMAZED by the amount of related and valuable information that is on this board. This is NOT true to most other boards I lurk on. I greatly appreciate everyone who post information, fact and opinion, here and I will post things that I learn during the project that I have started. I have a '72 1.7 that is 2/3 stripped and ready to weld up the patch panels (typical spots). I have been purchasing parts and tools necessary to do a good job. This board answers MANY questions I have. I am a fairly experienced as far as working on chassis and driveline, but the 914 has some unique design that needs understanding before one tears into the mechanicals.
Thanks again to all who share their valuable knowledge.

I guess i qualify as a lurker?? I enjoy all the info as I have had my 914 since 1978. It was a daily driver for 15 years then was parked until my daughter took an intrest about a year ago. We have gone thru the motor and gearbox, repainted the car and are now trying to do the interior. I've taken alot of the info from this board and put it to good use. I dont have a digital camera so no photos.
Best Regards, Shawn
No current pictures. Right now the only time I touch my 914 is when I put the cover back on after the wind blew it off for the umpteenth time. I only lurk here once every couple of weeks it seems (more lately) just to try and keep up with the various goings on. I unsubbed from Rennlist a long time ago but maintain subscriptions to the two Pors-chev lists since they're low traffic.
Oh wait, here's a picture of my 914, behind the Mustang, also under a cover. Also shows, roughly, the location of the 914's (and the Mustang's and the Triumph's) future home, which will hopefully break ground soon.
Okay, let's try that again (I'm not even gonna ask why I can't attach a picture)...

The engine tin looks COOL.
Now.. about that avatar. We are REAL open to cool avatars and the such.. but I cant have full blown nudity showing a nice muff.
I took the initiative and made a little block cover for her "hey nanny nanny". I enjoy the avatars and shapely women, but it's hard for people to browse the BBS at work when they have the fear of running across some scantly clad young lady in someones avatar.
I know you understand this.. your in the computer industry.

Pervy lurkers.

Ok, I changed it. Someone sent that to me once and it redefined the meaning of "Moon roof"
I liked it fine, some people have an aversion to the human boonkie.

Yeah I know I usually only post when I break something.
Only digital pics I have are courtesy of jdogg. Hope this works.
I have lots of cosmetic plans for the winter (and heat)

All right, I admit - I lurk here pretty frequently. Most of my time lately has been spent with the other woma... er... car lately - my '60 Morris Mini.
Here's a pic of the 1970 914-6 I'm buying from my father. It's from a couple years ago at a local SCCA autocross. Dad's driving in this pic: one.
The car was found about 4 years ago in Danville, Il - Owned by a rather eccentric guy and his dentist wife. It had been sitting for 5 years in non-running condition, and was mechanically ressurected by Brad Mayeur here in Peoria. After having a cam seize on the original 2.0, we replaced it with a 2.7 RS Spec engine from a hill climb car (Thanks Don Girard!). It's got headers with custom heater boxes, and a Triad muffler for exhaust. Still a little rough around the edges, but this car flat out "hauls balls!" We keep a pair of "DependsĀ®" undergarments in the center deposit for first time passengers... heheh.
Since it's a 2.7L, it must be fast
Ok, ok, I've been lurking more than posting lately. Haven't had anything to say, but have been reading a lot.
I keep missing the posts that get deleted. Also missed the 'good' avatars. Just as glad I did. Naked ladies with bare muffs don't do anything for me.
Well, I guess I am also guilty of just reading more than posting, so here are a few pics of mywifes teener the day we got it home, the progress up until about a month ago, and the parts car that may eventually become my rebuilder.

Well now that we are all out in the open, sort of. This is a great site for my car addiction. I am trying to post pictures of the winter project. Its a 73 more or less. Most of you from socal may have seen it, if you have I would welcome any history.

I've been lurking for a while as well. I found this car earlier this year behind an auto repair shop. So far, I've started to replace the hoses/fuel lines and hope to try and get it running before the end of the year. If anyone has any projects going on in the N. Dallas area feel freee to email me....I'd be interested to see your progress and welcome the chance to actually see/hear a running 914.
Hopefully, I'll have more to share in the upcoming months. Thanks for all the good info so far!

I'm not posting as I'm lurking.
Hi,
I have started reading and sometimes responding ...but here is my 73 1.7 project...found it in a bone yard...had been sitting there for 7 years. As unbelievable as it may seem the interior (tan) is in great shape...no damage to the seats...dash has 1 crack above the ashtray and it has the original radio in it...also had the original tool kit and the owners manual in the glovebox...motor is in pieces seems a valve imprinted its face on one of the pistons...rust is there... some surface and some places need complete replacement...all glass is perfect...but very dirty...paint was originally red...have not brought a car back to life...but am going to try....appreciate all on this board and their comments...have learned much already...want to learn more and am not afraid to ask questions...

Ask away Ed, that's why we're here. Welcome to the board
OK Seanery,
Who the hell is that silly bastard in your avatar?
My car is 95% ready for the road, but as always extra cash needs to be spent in other places. Collects dust pretty gud though.
I'm begining to strip my car down for rust repair and prep for -6 conversion.
I dunno who the kid is, but the picture haunts me, so it became my avatar. I've been looking for a new pic, but it's gotta move me like this one did.
Terrance.. where have you been ?? Are you on break from school ??
B
Hi, I'm a lurker, and that's my sweetheart to the left there.
Your emoticons are a trip, by the way. Have one on me.
Britton
Cool. More NorCal people.
B
Why are you surprised, this IS a NORTHERN CALIFORNIA club.
I've been around. hehe. Nah, this semester is finishing up for me in about 3 weeks. (finals ,arggggg) Also, been playing with my go kart once in a while, and working part time (16 hours a week) to make a few bucks.
I've also been playing with fiberglass a lot trying to teach myself how to mold and make some parts. I hope to have a fiberglass hood mold in the next few weeks.
Yeah, that's all....
Lurker? All I'm going to say is that my post-count says it all.
But anyway, I'm Damian Grihalva. MANY MANY years ago I had a 914 website (back in 96) called D and C's 914 lover page. It was my first attempt at web design. I since moved to Colorado Springs, sold all my previous 914s and got into 4x4s. I now own and operate one of the largest International Scout specific customization shops in the US (http://www.dandcextreme.com).
BUT my love for the 914 has never dimmed. In the past, I've owned a 71, 72 and a 74. I now own another 74 2.0 (which happens to be for sale ). Anyway, here's my 914 (dead stock!):
Here's my Scout (nowhere close to stock) ~ I hope I don't shock you guys these two extremes
From german sports cars to good Ole American 4x4s ~ God, I love America!
Dude. The Scout rocks.. Post more pics of it. My father worked for International Harvestor back in the day. We knew a few people with Scouts needless to say.
Make you link to the website a hyperlink so people can click on it.
B
Seanery, Just messing with you. Your avatar is a picture of me that I posted on the mugshot post. Out on a naval base in pearl harbor, kept trying to be like dad and putting buts in my mouth - so he lit it up and snapped a pic.
haha!
That's funny! I knew someone posted it there, but didn't know if it was actually someone or not. Too funny. It's a trippy picture.
I been watching the "races" of these "boulder climbers" on TV. Looks like fun. My Dad had a couple Scouts. Both of them he converted to a 289. Talk about torque!
bruce
snoopy, is your 914 the one listed 4 sale in thesamba?
kevin
a lurking ? i frequently experience a hot starting problem. i replaced the starter with a very exspensive high-torque unit from aa. no help. then i bought a very exspensive deep cell marine battery from aa. no help. i then bought a very exspensive genuwine ingnition switch from aa, it did'nt cone with a key. no help. i then bought a "hot start" relay that was supposed to solve the problem from aa. no help. the plastic sheath around my clutch cable is melted and smokes when i try to start my car. the guy at aa says it's because my clutch plate is bad and i need to replace my flywheel as well. are they taking advantage of me? how is their return policy?
kevin
Snoopy,
I work with a guy here in Helena, Montana who is seriously into corn binders. He has friends in Colorado (in fact, he once mentioned knowing or knowing of some IH guy in Colorado with a 914, might you be him?) and attends some sort of "Scout Jamboree" or whatever each summer down there. His name is Tom Mandera. Know him?
John
I have been lurking the last couple of weeks while I concluded the purchase of a couple of 914s. It seemed like bad luck to talk about the deal before it was concluded.
Here is a picture of the running car before a car backed into the driver side door and the interior was removed to improve autocross times. Afterall what is a post without pics.
I'm sure I will be here with lots of questions in the future.
So far I have traced down a problem with the rear tail lights. Damn those fuses. And installed the passenger seat so I could take my kids for a ride. If all my future 914 projects are this easy and cheap I will be very happy.
BTW what does PPI stand for ; ^P
Don't post much but have a 73 w/ motor out of 74 1.8l. lets see if i can post the photo moving a bed.

K... here goes,
I bought a '74 2.0 back this past summer from the previous owner in Sunnyvale, CA. The car was a daily driver, but was setup for AX. I drove it back to my house in Monterey and have been "playing" with it when time allows.
The current list of "to dos:"
get the external oil cooler hooked-up
repaint bumpers
fix the cold start plumbing
fix the heater
minor electrical issues
fix the speedo and odo
replace door handle
install gauge cluster
The car drives well, just needs some TLC. Photos to be uploaded when I get home later on... but the car is (I think it's called Adriatic Blue) with Mahl "burner" 4 bolts.
Ah... a photo lurking on my laptop:

I lurk more than post...although the community has been invaluable numerous times.
'72 w/ 2.0 & dual Webers (hopefully, eventually, a 3.2 or 3.6 conversion )
911 calipers and rotors at all four
16x6/7's
Konig sport seat (driver's side only)
5-points for both seats
Fuel safe fuel cell
Mucho, mucho fun!
