Have a MPS that I thought was a 1.7. Tried to check it by swapping with my other, but the plug is different.

Is this a 1.8?

Part numbers are 0280100049 & 022906051E

1.8s do not have MPSs.

Yours is a 1970-73 1.7L MPS.

The plug on the one in my car has a rounded edge on one side instead of being square. The size seemed slightly different, I didn't want to force it, it wouldn't slide right in.

i would bet that since the connections to the MPS are simply to two inductors (think of an inductor as simply a helix of wire like if you wound a wire around a pencil), that there is no polarity to have to pay attention to so the plug could go either way. some plugs have a little "stop" in the corners of the opening for the plug that restricts the plug from being connected wrong.

There are 4 numbers on the connector on the MPS and the same 4 numbers on the harness connector. The numbers correspond to one another - and it should only go in one way. It *may* not make a difference, but the same holds true throughout the car and some connectors do only fit in one fashion.

Flip the connector, the MPS works the same either way.
