914World.com _ 914World Garage _ VIN decals for the door jam

Posted by: Slowpoke Nov 14 2003, 12:55 AM

I have come up with a process to stamp the original style build dates and VIN numbers on new door jam decals. It will look just like the originals. I haven't worked out how I will do them for people, so they are not using this service to dupe up 914/6 or LE's (etc). Brad suggestions???? If only a few people are interested I will buy the decals from AA and punch them out. If enough people are interested I will get some made. I'm also looking at punching in those large C's to make it tamper proof as used on the later cars (something AA decals don't offer) . If you might be interested in this service please post here. I will post later when I'm ready to start the service. I haven't figured out a price yet. It depends on how many I can do at one time. I'd like to do batches of these every six months or so. Like anything else, it the set up time. I'll post a picture of the decal before I start taking firm orders. smile.gif
Thanks
Peter

You should also post this here: --->http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=SF&f=4
That way it doesn't git lost several pages back and have no one see it. Sounds valuable! Great job!

Peter this is awesome.

I say make your own so you dont have to wait on AA.

Can you show us a pic.

Oh.. and please put something together for the "vendors forum"

This is too cool. I know I will stock them when I get the 914 biz off the ground.

Anyone who paints their car needs one of these. Body shops rarely mask the original off correctly and you still get bleed thru.

i took mine off before we painted it but it still has the "Signal Orange" paint code on it. hmmmm, now i have to figure out what the paint code for "Guards Red" would be. idea.gif

Reason number 763 that this will be a huge hit in the 914 community!

Peter,

You wont make a million dollars off this.. but they will sell nicely. Throw them up on Ebay or sell them thru the club site.

Andy, use code 98, which is for custom colors. biggrin.gif Fake vins, fake color codes. Next thing you know you'll hear about 914/6s which have had whole halves replaced!

Posted by: jonwatts Nov 14 2003, 01:21 AM

This came up a while ago (within the last year) and I recall there is someone else either making the plates or punching in the VINs. Anyone recall the particulars? I need one but I'd rather not rely on AA.

Posted by: Slowpoke Nov 14 2003, 01:44 AM

Andy, it is the black decal. "Manufactured by VOLKSWAGEN AG ........etc) It is not the paint trim tag. It just has the build date, (month and year) and the VIN number. I did some today to test the process (not on the real decal though) and it worked great. I should know more after I get some decals from AA to test and post some pictures. Then I'll post in the venders section.
I'm not really looking to make a million dollars. Just do something to enhance people cars. Like a lot of other people here are doing. Probably after I buy a few decals AA will shut me down anyway. After that the cost of having decals made will be a big factor in my continuing. Anyway, I'll know more in the next few weeks. I'm really more concerned about people using it to validate a bogus car.

i see. too bad. sad.gif i think you could make more money with the plate that has the paint-code on it ....

I'd buy one for each of my cars.

Posted by: elmonte Nov 14 2003, 02:38 AM

There was a thread on the bird board, about getting these from
the factory,through a dealer for a $100 with a couple month wait
I would be interested in a less expensive alternative.

Keep us posted

I'm in... for obvious reasons!!!

Posted by: gklinger Nov 14 2003, 07:38 AM

Peter,

Great idea. I would be in for one.

Posted by: davep Nov 14 2003, 07:47 AM

One thing to consider however is that there were a few variations in the printing of the decals over the years. That said, I'm interested. I think PCNA requires a copy of the ownership as verification of the VIN, and it may have to be done through a dealer to ensure it is on the up and up. Security may be something to carefully consider, you don't want to get into any legal problems. Have us sign a waiver or something to cover your butt. I have a few photos of these decals that may illustrate differences. I have no idea as to what VIN range they are applicable to though. The same goes for the date codes on them. That at least I have a bit of data on. I'm certainly willing to assist in this area if it would help.

I'd be in for a couple (4), depending on the $$$

Posted by: skline Nov 14 2003, 08:31 AM

I too would be interested in 2 of them. One of mine was long gone and the other one is really hard to read.

Add one more.

My '72 VW Squareback has the same-look sticker as my '73 Porsche 914 so...if you can get or print different vehicle weight data you would have an even LARGER audience by including the VW community...and there are a LOT more dubs out there than 914's wink.gif

Hey Guys,
I know of a good part time "parts" business for one of you 914ers. We did this for one of my past Early Ford V/8ers guys & it grew into a full time business.
Are you Ready!!
Research the parts book and package "Metric Nuts & bolts" specific for the motor, chassis, etc. etc. Lots of guys doing repairs or restorations will gladly pay $$ to purchase packaged nuts & bolts rather than go hunting for these nuance items.
I know, I would gladly pay someone to send me all the cheeseheads screws, nuts, bolts with the correct finish for a motor rebuild.
Tom

Posted by: GWN7 Nov 14 2003, 02:14 PM

I just go down to my local hardware store for metric stuff. Not sure if it's the right grade. Larger stuff I get from a supply house in town. Someone mentioned that you can get metric stuff from a CAT dealer.

would there be 4? A white on black with the GVW?

Posted by: Thomas J Bliznik Nov 14 2003, 02:34 PM

Mr. GWN7
I know some 914 like to buy like yourself, but what I was trying to suggest is "convenience shopping". One of our 914ers can make a little side money packaging up the correct nuts/bolts for repairs with the 914 crowd. They buy in bulk, count the correct number of items needed, put a 100% markup x frt. I am sure even AA would be interested in a packages of correct parts for resale. Just trying to help with an idea for a start up business for a low buck 914er. It could be done in their basement/garage. 7-11 is successful why not a 914er?

I wonder if there is any others? Just the 4 types?

Tom, it's just GWN7. Mr. is my dad laugh.gif or Bruce, but we already have one of those. Or the crazy nice guy from Canada wink.gif

Posted by: Qarl Nov 14 2003, 02:48 PM

I have a spreadsheet of most of the nut, bolt, and washer sizes for the suspension, brakes, and steering stuff. I know most of the sources for the correct zinc and yellow zinc hardware.

Hmmm..... not enough time now to do it.

Posted by: Thomas J Bliznik Nov 14 2003, 02:55 PM

Bruce (GWN7) Nice guy from Canada, AH
We are lucky to have good neighbors from the North. About now our weatherman says, a big cold front is on its way from Canada.
Yea we love you lots. keep the cold stuff in Canada! I was on the Canada side in Sault St Marie, Ontario recently. Had a small breakfast & cost me $12.00 How can you guys buy gas for your 914's with the cost of living so high??
Tom

Posted by: davep Nov 14 2003, 03:20 PM

Hey, don't forget that you send up all the Colorado lows and not to mention all those tornados. Besides, most of the cold winds are courtesy of Alaska and we just pass them on.

Yes there are other verions of the decal, I don't have them all on this computer.

Posted by: GWN7 Nov 14 2003, 05:10 PM

Tom,

You must have had the breakfast at a tourist spot. Lots of places have "Specials" for $2.99, coffee included. It's like anywhere, you just have to know where to shop. Gas is running around $0.65 a liter (4 liters = US gallon) about $2.00 US a gallon. Minimum wage's ($6.75) are higher here than in most of the states I've visited ( I have a union job so that's not a factor for me) and most of our food costs are the same or cheaper than I have seen advertised (except fresh vegtables in the winter) Beef is real cheap these days $0.99 lbs. for reg ground. About $4.00 lbs. for prime rib.

It's the old case of supply and demand. Wages are higher to offset the costs of living and our higher taxes.

I would be interested also, only need one though

Chris

Posted by: davep Nov 14 2003, 07:32 PM

Now I'm home and found the fourth variation as posted. Also a fifth that is on the 914/6 where Porsche replaces VW. Then I found that later in 72 from the second decal it reverted to the first decal. So, how does one know exactly what style should have been on your car? Are all the varieties available? Post a photo if you have a decal on your car. Lets span the years.

DaveP

Posted by: Slowpoke Nov 15 2003, 10:29 AM

I got a decal from AA. It looks just like (color-wording) the decal on top (of the three that Dave posted) except it has the weight info on the bottom, like in the decal on the bottom. This might be a bastard decal. not ever really produce by the factory. Or it could be one of the many that was used. But, it will be the one I will be using (at least to get started). It does not have the tamper proof cutting on it. I'd like to add that feature. I"ll check on having some decals made. But, I'm sure it would only be one style of lettering and just the two colors. I'll keep everyone informed on this as it works out. Thanks for your encouragment.
Peter

I hate to throw cold water on this topic, but this has been discussed before, and the consensus was that it is a violation of Federal Law to do this. I certainly would not want to be the guy selling them. The only legal way to do this is through your dealer.

Posted by: 914gem Nov 19 2003, 07:00 PM

I'll take half a dozen. I paint 5 or 6 914s a year. And it looks like more next year. Keep me in mind. pray.gif

SCOTT KLINE!!!!

Tell, me more about your black 74 with VIN 15860..

Its in LE territory...

Posted by: JOHNMAN Feb 25 2004, 02:14 AM

I also would like a couple if you are actually going to do this. I was thinking I would have to do this myself, but if you have already started the process, I would like to replace my missing door jam decals in my cars.

Is this a dead topic or are you still persuing it?

Thanks.

Posted by: Steve Thacker Feb 25 2004, 07:06 AM

I most certainly would purchase one. Mine was painted over by the dumb dumb with the spray gun.

Posted by: Doug73/2.0 Feb 25 2004, 10:43 AM

I would be very interested, My 73 is missing it. I was surprised to see that when the previous owner had the 914 painted, the pulled the sticker...
Regarding /6 and LE, You might ask owerners to send some VIN proof to you. Phots of the other two locations and or title photo copy of that area.

Just thinking
Thanks

I want to be the first to have a -4 conversion! My VIN will say its a -6, but if you look under the lid its really a -4! That would confuse lots of people (esp with stock 4 lug wheels).

Posted by: dmenche914 May 18 2004, 06:56 PM

Mine is torn up, so i am interested in a new one.

too prevent you getting duped into making false tags, ask for a copy of the title before making the tag, the number on the tag has to match the titles number.

I'd probably be in for a couple... if they were correct for the year.

Definately CYA (cover your ass), by asking for proof of ownership in the form of title, registration or an insurance statement that lists the VIN. I heard a story about a place down south (Tennessee?) that is suspected of creating 914 LEs.

You don't want to be any part of that kind of stuff.

I wish I remembered the entire story... someone told me over some drinks at the MUSR a few years ago. A shop that finds black 74s and restores them as LEs.

Damn... I'm suffering from CRS lately.

In this same vein, are the metallicized stickers for tire size and pressures, etc. for the underside of the engine lid available somewhere? One of mine is peeling, and in addition, I need to paint the lid.
Thanks
