After looking at different types of mirrors for 914's I decided to try some that I hadn't seen. Many posted to my thread and their mirrors looked great too but these were free (in typical 914 fashion) so I just had to try them.
They took a bit of reworking, fitting into the curve of the door and I had to make steel supports for inside the door but I think I am going to be happy with the final product next year when I paint the car and mirrors together.
The primed steel supports will be welded inside the door when I am done but for a total cost of nothing I think they will do.
BTW they are electric ( I got the switch free too) and I plan to hook them up when I am done.
First the mirrors....

The steel supports...
These were welded inside the doors between the mounting holes. When the mirrors were installed they pulled nice and tight and the mirrors are firm. Without them the mirrors might wobble a bit on the thin sheet metal.

Other side...
Nuts were ground on an angle before welding to pull the mirror square to the door.

I like the steel support idea! Much more room for error as compared to tacking on a couple of nuts to the door itself.
and last for now
I'll post again in a year or two to show the final product.

Awesome
Nice work
Really nice; what year Olds are those mirrors from ?
Mid 90's delta 88 but I think the same mirrors are on the Riviera and a couple of other GM cars.
And here they are on the freshly painted P2 project car.

Damn nice...................... and the pick and pull is full of those mirrors.
Car looks really good also.

Nice work!!!!
Let us know about visibility/adjustability, etc....
I had been eye-balling those for a while. I am glad someone did it before I tried it That looks perfect!
Looks Good!
They look like the mirrors on my Aurura
That is "THE " best looking NARP mirror I have seen. Those are great.

What a great looking mirror. Did you have to modify the curve of the base to get them to sit right? That is one thing that I don't like about installing Porsche Flag mirrors on 914's. You have to modify the base to get them to sit correctly.
Well done!
Very nice indeed!
I nearly went the Ford Escort route; found some real nice one's at the Pic-n-Pull but was missing a couple of tools at the time.
Maybe I should sell my brand new 911 take-off flag's, get some of those Old's mirrors from Pick-n-Pull, and put the rest of the money in the bank!

Doug,
Forgot to ask: I understand the nut plate, but how does the mirror attach from the outside? I see no outside screw/bolt/latch.
Thanks,
Andys
Charlie is right. The protruding parts under the mirror go tightly through the nuts welded on the door supports. I then just used a hex head course thread sheet metal screw (one that was small enough to NOT split the protruding mounting holes) from inside the door to ratchet them into place.
As for contouring the mirror to the door. I had an old rusty door I used as a template and pre-drilled the mounting holes to get just the right spacing and angle. I then used a small Dremel tool to contour the under side of the mirror to fit the door. It isn't perfect but with the original black gasket between the mirror and the door you would never know it.
For visibility on the passenger side, I tested the location before I drilled any holes. It's close but you can see the mirror OK.
Thanks for the compliments, I think they look great too. The best part is they were cheap, look good and on a scale of 1 - 10, (1 being an oil change and 10 being a complete restoration) this job was about a 2.5. The only reason I say as high as 2.5 is because I had to fill the old holes and paint the door and mirrors. I still haven't hooked up the wiring but that will be the easiest part I'm sure.

Imitation is the best form of flattery, go for it and let me know if I can help.
When you put on your flares, find a good landmark to start with. I had my car on a rotisserrie and had nothing on it, only the chassis. To put mine on I measured from the back bumper mount to the back of the flare inside lip. What I didn't know was that for some reason it was different from side to side by 1/2". (maybe an accident in the past??) I didn't realize this until after I painted the car and tried to fit the rocker panel covers on. One was too short but they were both the same length. Dope!
I haven't tried to put my turbo twist 17" rims on yet but I'm hoping that it won't show too much. I will always know and some day I might cut it off and move it forward but for now....
those look great, nice work!
Those are good looking mirrors! Nice work!
I like those allot.
I have a Premier body kit that those would look sweet with.
With this kind of response I should have picked up a bunch of sets, made a bunch of door supports and sold them!
Very nice. They don't even look ricer either....
I think I just made up my mind for my 6. Color confirmed, interior confirmed, mirrors confirmed, as for the time.............
Let me know where to send the $. Those are very nice!
I may not have been reading carefully enough, but can somebody compare the level of effort for these GM mirrors to the level of effort for Porsche flag mirrors? Sounds like some reshaping was required for both...
sounds like you made a product that might be in demand...if you decide to do this, give me a pm..I would be interested!
Michael
Print of mirror location.
Open it and maybe you too can put some on your car.

I've started looking for the olds mirrors and have found replacement ones on ebay but the ad says they are oem replacement but it also says they are plastic. Are the oem mirrors plastic? Just trying to get the best ones available to start with. Sorry but I have asked this question on another thread also.
Yes mine are plastic, painted and cool.
