914World.com _ 914World Garage _ "Ultimate" 800 HP V8 race 914 on Ebay

Posted by: neo914-6 Jan 21 2007, 01:01 PM

The NASCAR hp stretched the gearbox(s) and chassis limits which escalated the costs. It is an awesome car and I appreciate Elmer (with his means) for having it built.

What do you guys think the reserve is going to be for this car? I would bet he's set it at $75K or higher.

Posted by: nebreitling Jan 21 2007, 03:57 PM

i've been on the track at the same time as this guy. i think the car was stored/maintained at thunderhill for a while -- i've seen it up there many times.

let me just say that this is a scary, scary, scary-fast car. it's also bit unerving, whilst traveling towards turn 1 at 110mph, to have this guy blow by you at 150+. i've let him by in the middle of a turn, and by the time i've got the wheels straight again, he's no where to be seen. absolutely crushing accelleration and cornering speed. not for the timid, married, self-preserving, or inexperienced.

I sent him funds for his DVD. Hopefully there is some in car footage. Did this car always have the V8? Or was it Porsche powered at one time? I seem to recall seeing pictures of this car with the Bauer Porsche banner and a flat six in it.

Bauer started the work, it was pretty funny when they ran this open exhaust V8 amongst all the Porsche cars... shocked[1].gif

add says 1:53s at Thunderhill,,,,

we have club racers that turn better than that...and I know they haven't spent 250K to do it either.
that car should be faster than that at TH....maybe it is the driver smile.gif

Posted by: nebreitling Jan 21 2007, 05:15 PM

i would imagine it does sub 1:50's -- i don't understand why 1:53 is in the add...

nope ...

ad says:
"To produce a car that can run sub 1:53's at Thunderhill you will be well into mid six figures and 2 years of sorting and flustration."

maybe my english just isn't good enough, but IMHO, nowhere in that sentence does it say that that car is running 1:53 at TH ...

either way, 1:53 is damn fast (at least for the 3.0 config). very few GT1's run sub 1:50's (SCCA record is 1:47). SP record is like 1:48 and change.

what does Hank Watts run in his monster car?

Posted by: Dan (Almaden Valley) Jan 21 2007, 08:37 PM

1:52s and :53s
Matt Lowrance 1:52
Masuo Robinson in his 3.2L semi-framed 911 tub...1:54

all of these cars are much less than $250K

that was my point before that the person who wrote the ad used 1:53 as some magical number that required geometric dollars to run.

Very nice car, but $250K confused24.gif

Posted by: messix Jan 21 2007, 08:46 PM

what i get from that statement is all told he has spent $250k on this car. with all the different renditions that it has had in development it would be easy to do. but to say its worth that much, not a chance.

Posted by: nebreitling Jan 21 2007, 08:54 PM

damn, that's fast.

well, you're absolutely right on point that there are just-as-fast cars out there for less than 250k. hell, you can get a semi-fresh gt3 cup car for ~125k. by the writer's own admission, he has "only" 60k in parts (minus engine). clearly, there must be a LOT of labor/fabrication in the car.

still, i've seen the GT3 cup cars out there (they run 1:48's and lower in good weather), and they don't "seem" as fast or brutal as this car did to me. in any case, i would agree with soloracer's estimate of 75k reserve. it'll be intersting to see if he gets it.

Elmer built a 32 year old 914 at shop rate to compete with highly developed production race cars that he could have just bought. A V8 914 racer encouraged him to build this car but didn't expect he would spec a NASCAR motor. The Porsche shop he chose worked many hours making the engine work and had limited V8 experience. It ate 930 gearboxes, overheated until he bought a Renegade radiator, and required a mechanic at each race. Like many of us, he caught the 914 bug and at least stuck with it to get it sorted.

He has bank and enjoys racing, you can't fault him for that... wink.gif

Lawrence,

he collects club fees to fund his "ho's" w00t.gif laugh.gif

Posted by: nebreitling Jan 21 2007, 10:47 PM

can't fault him even one little bit. this car is absolutely insane. biggrin.gif

I saw the car in person at Hamlin's shop at Sears a few months ago getting all the rear suspension strengthened out.

He tore the passenger side suspension console ear right out of the car.

Trekkor: Was that due to the engine torque, an accident or the cornering forces that the car was subjected to?

Posted by: Andyrew Jan 22 2007, 02:20 AM

Sadly I've never seen it..

Heard tons of stories..

Any guesses on the reserve?

Im guessing 60k.

PS: why so heavy? He's got a TON of reinforcements... dear god..

You would be surprised how quickly weight adds up - I know I was. Also note he said DRY weight - so wet would be at least 100# more with fuel, water and oil (dry sump would be a case minimum). Mine is 2645 wet (case of oil, water and ~10gals fuel) with 1975 doors (reinforced/fully assembled with glass+winders), steel lids front and rear, two huge coolers (one trans one oil), 16"x30" radiator, cooling lines, heavier transaxle (the 901 is about as light as they come v. a 930 or Pantera ZF). wing+uprights, bigger brakes, in his case larger wheels and tires (v. nice light 16s many race teeners run), on and on. Sounds like his car is mostly a tub car whereas mine is a chunk of the stock body (A pillar, around the doors and up to the sail) and tube chassis. I was 2,305lbs with my tub car, no cage whatsoever or or dry sump for comparison.

I have to admit I have probably an extra 100lbs of bar in my car to help relieve my pucker factor that many folks would consider (and I mostly agree) to be too much/wasted weight, but I have NO flex whatsoever.

And 800HP must feel phenomenal. Last time out when I nailed mine rolling onto the track with 525HP/438lb-ft it is sportbike fast and 1st gear on my 930 hits about 70mph almost instantaneously, so 800HP must make your eyes feel like they are bleeding.

Yea, and we may well have a couple of those cars (Mat Lowrance being one) at the AutoX school this summer. Wouldn't it be fun to watch them run at lunch?

Reserve not met (it was not 75k)

This car is one of a kind. It is being relisted because the buyer was unable to complete the transaction. I believe it to be the fastest road racing 914 ever built. It has every race performance part and modification to win races in any classification. Moreover, with a change of tire which I have the car is street legal !!

Obviously, it is a purpose built race car, however, since it is a 1975 chassis the car has current california registration and title and is driven on the street for light weight testing, car shows etc.

I am selling this car because I now have 3 race cars and I want to focus on a GT1 championship with a tube frame Corvette bodies ex-Trans AM car. This is a big loss for me over $45,000 was spent last year alone modifying the chassis, supension, and running gear. Overall, this project has more than $250,000 in it. Probably making it the most expesnsive 914 race car in history. Why would someone do this? CRAZY! But I wanted to have a midengine car that could run down NASCAR's and ohter high end Porsche race cars. So I did it.
