914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Last Dash For VAN Cash!

Posted by: rick 918-S Nov 21 2003, 05:47 PM

Here's the skinny, I spoke with Brad. We have an idea how much the van bill is going to be and it looks like were short. Between now and Sunday night we need everyone to hit the PayPal account as hard as you can. It's easy. Every can afford something. Come monday Brad will contact his benifactors and ask them to make up the balance. I don't want him to have to do that. This was our project together. I want us to finish it. Don't worry about donating too much. There is a 914 Club Event coming up. The balance can be used for that.

I want you to think about how long we have been working to help Dave and his family out. Were at the finish line with fresh tires. We just need to take a shortcut onto pit road for a splash-and-go to to Win. If you never felt Victory now is the time!

Posted by: Brad Roberts Nov 21 2003, 05:53 PM

Yeah. This is hard for all of us. I HATE asking for anything.. I'm really good at giving, but the time is now. I know we will be short...if we run over.. I can actually send it back to people or dump into a new shirt run "I paid for Daves Van" ...LOL laugh.gif

Help us help Dave.

I promise we will NEVER hold another fund raiser (until I need new race car tires) LOL

We dont know exactly how short we are. We wont know that until Monday. But just from some quick math... WAY short.

I dont want to give any numbers. It doesnt make sense. I have people in the wings to take up the BIG slack.. but I dont want to pull the resource if we dont have too.

I can go 7 hrs either way from San Jose. That is, I can find a way down to pick it up and bring it up to God's Country (aka: the Bay Area) or I can take it north from GC for 7 or 8 hrs and leave it with someone and find my way back. (i.e. I'll take a second car either way)

Wow! Thanks everyone. This really makes me smile. smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

Think about all we've done. Geoff and Brad and I think Bruce started this drive.. Pretty soon we started raising money with a story and some photos.

I got the letter published in Excellence magazine (not sure if it helped, but we got exposure). And I held my "matching contribution" campaign when everyone chipped in.

And then there were a half dozen or so e-bay auctions that directed the funds towards this effort (bearings, custom airbrushed t-shirts, new and used parts!)

Then the big swap meet at that heat exchanger place...

And the big effort to pick up the car from the psycho sales woman... and the quest to transport it up north.

And the engine saga....

And look where we are... within sight of the finishing line. Way to go.... EVERYONE!!! clap56.gif clap56.gif clap56.gif clap56.gif clap56.gif

Thank you so much.

Posted by: rick 918-S Nov 22 2003, 10:40 PM

I can truely say I've never seen anything like this. If this kind of fund raising were done by one of the big charity's the recipents would be lucky to receive 10 cents on the dollar. Were getting closer but the clock is ticking boys and girls. No donation is too small. Give from you heart an know all the money is going directly to a friend.

Posted by: Bruce Allert Nov 23 2003, 12:01 AM

I think we ought'a contact one of the movie guys. This could be a big hit at the box office. How about Stephen Speilberg?
NO WAIT idea.gif Stephen King would be best... Kinda like his movie Christine laugh.gif But there'd be a good twist at the end when we get the VW to Daves house.... clap56.gif

Hey Kim! Sorry, Didn't mean to ignore you all day. I polished off the coffee and went out to the garage. I now have primer on the M3! Woo Hoo!

KaptKaos, Yes that's the Pay Pal button. You did the right thing. Brad will give us the total as soon as he checks in. I'm sure he is breathing a sigh of relief. Do you all realize what this means to Dave and his family?

OK, I kicked in too. there is still time to click on the pay pal box for a friend. No one is forcing anyone to do it. Just help with what you can. Your $ 10.00 is that much less Brad will have to ask for tomorrow. We all know he's great at giving confused24.gif and average asking for help laugh.gif

Oh sure. Now you're pressuring me by actually *working* on an alleged "car" today. Sure, it's not a Pcar, but it's German. Sheesh. What next? More pics of your 8? You would shame us all into action then -- in preparation for The Classic™. (don't do it .... the massive number of 914'a on the road for the classic would swamp all local facilities and the fun factor would bring the Governator down to talk to us all)

Ok. It's sunday night, and I won an ebay item for less than expected.

Brad-o-la (that's his new title folks, he's too bashful to say it -- he may pronounce it "brad-o-la-la-la, I'm not completely sure), please add $50 to the check I owe you. If that don't kick the week off, we're missing the game here. This puppy needs a home, and we are The Delivery Van™.

(I know -- you're thinking "hey kim, wtf? A delivery van? That's the best you can do? From a marketing perspective, you should be saying "we're the Elise" or "we're the new carrea"." Sorry folks -- Delivery Vans RULE! They bring nearly everything that matters.... FedEx, The Brown Guys, etc .... think "function over form" .... but I digress)

I will admit to being willing to participate in Delivery Options. Once we're locked and loaded, this will definitely be the final game!!!!!

Posted by: Brad Roberts Nov 24 2003, 10:57 PM

Dave,

We never planned to reveal a number until AFTER we had a total. I did not get the engine at discount (couldt find one period.. so the dealership nailed us for the full amount)

Not much we can do about it but eat it and go on. Currently we have 3545$ Several people bailed out during the last one and we ended up real short. I knew we would be short.. but I also knew I had several people telling me they would step up and help us pay off the total. They are hard to find now that we are close.

This will make the van a 18k dollar van... NICE. Why do you think I persued the "legal advice" ??

Hi Brad, We did really good this weekend. Sorry to hear about the shortage caused by the pull out of funds on the first round. What's next? Do We keep going or do you have a plan? If you don't object I could try to track down the owner of the dealership and see if I can talk him into sponsoring us a little. As you can tell I like to fix things. Just say the work. Called and spoke with Jimmy. He stated they wanted to be sure the thing was working. He stated that in speaking with Phillip he was told that someone was to supply an engine. I think I recall an early convsersation about that. Ended up in having the dealer get one so Dave would have the warrentee. I guess the dealer engine is the big jump in price. That and the loss of some pledges promised is making up the shortage. Jimmy told me he is having Phillip call me. But I have high hopes, a clear head, and a positive additude.

Posted by: Brad Roberts Nov 25 2003, 04:54 PM

It was only going to save us 300$ if I ordered the engine from VW through a shop down here. They knew all along that it was going to be a factory engine. The words (used engine) never came out of my mouth. I explained to them that I could buy from VWOA also.. when the engine was back ordered 15 times... I told them to order it that we where not saving enough money to justify me/us tracking down an engine.

You are now getting what I have dealt with for how many months now ?? Plain BULLSHIT from the word GO.

They bounce you around and "protect" each other from having to deal with "people"

B

Posted by: rick 918-S Nov 25 2003, 06:27 PM

Sorry If it sounded like I was referring to the engine as used. Jimmy really didn't say that. I understand why you had the dealer take over. They have more clout If they choose to excersize it. If we can buy the engine with a
$ 300.00 price break they should be able to help with that too. I didn't hear back from Phillip today. I wasn't really expecting to after Jimmy told me They wanted to be sure the thing ran out good first. If they call you Brad or Dave let me know. Part of the problem (very small part) is the van doesn't really belong to me. When the van is finished they may call the contact number they have in the work order.

I'll keep you all posted. If these guy's come through we will have to light a fire across the net for them. I know the van was there for a long time but were close now. How short are we and is this actually holding up pickup of the van right now? Sorry, been too busy for the board lately... I see the total in the Paypal account but don't see the actual amount we need. We should have that exact figure by now if we already don't.

I though with the intake we would have the van a week and a half ago... then the hoses... now another week... just irritating.

as for the advertising thing, i dont think it would be going against the neutral thing, just explain how they helped us out and we are in turn doing them a favor, i doubt it would offend anyone here... i would also assume with 1300 members here, most belonging to other sites, that word of mouth would also be a good thing for them, seems like there are a lot of people looking for a good dealership, for parts if nothing else. Great job everyone, by the way, hope the van is everything Dave needs it to be!!

Hi Steve, When I spoke with Phillip Yesterday he stated The Van would be done on Friday. They will be open the day after Turkey day. Phillip stated he was going to look through the bill, print it,and put it on his managers desk. I guess in my haste (and the fact I was on a company cell call) I didn't ask for the total. Last we heard the bill was over $ 5000.00. It's posted someplace here. Were close to having enough to seal the deal anyway. Looks like the last update was yesterday $ 4025.88

Posted by: rick 918-S Nov 28 2003, 05:28 PM

Ok, here's the facts as I have them today. The van is running but has a valve cover leak. This is a warrentee issue. The cost to repair will not add to the bill. Phillip stated they ordered a valve cover. I asked if they couldn't just replace the gasket. Phillip stated. The cover was installed by the rebuilder and probably over tightened and warped. They are replacing the whole cover under the warrentee. The new part is expected to arrive on monday by 9:00 am. The warrentee repair should be completed by noon.

Here's an overview of the van history as recapped by Phillip. He stated he was contacted and asked if he would do the install on the van. His original agreement included a supplied engine from us. When the van arrived by tow truck they discovered the engine was partially disassemabled. The guy that took apart the connectors and took the parts off threw the parts in a box. There is going to be an added charge for having to search out and fix the problems created by the first shop. Like it or not Some shops won't even work on vehicles that come in disassembled. Phillip stated if he had know the vehicle was taken apart he would have turned down the repair.

I was told the current bill is $ 4998.00. This does not include the additional labor for hunting through the van for the wiring connectors and other parts that were removed from the van.

Phillip stated he has informally discussed this with his manager Tom and there is a possible 10% discount on parts and labor they could offer. But he did not have the final bill yet. SO Were getting a discount. How much is not clear yet. Phillip Stated he would call me around noon PC time That's around 2:00 pm here on monday.

That's all I know.

Rich,

Thx for publishing updates -- "information tames the raging beast" (at least in me anyway!). Closing any deal takes patience and focus. Things can always go sideways at the end -- patience and levelheadedness are usually the best way to drive the entire project through to completion. (I'm with Ya-Roon -- it's cool to watch a "closer in action" laugh.gif)

It will be fun when the only problem we have is getting the vehicle from south to north!

Have you guys considered how you are going to get the money from Paypal to the dealer w/o holding the Van another 7-10 days (Paypal's normal time to get a check from them)? I'm thunkin' the dealer doesn't take Paypal... Is the Paypal attached to a sweep account that will allow a tranfer of this size in the 1-2 day (Paypal's normal sweep time) for this amount of money?

The other option is that somebody is holding a Paypal debit card that is attached to this account. Brad?

Just don't want to get to a point where there is another un-forseen delay.

No worries. My Pyapal account has a credit card attached to it/debit card backed by MasterCard. I even made sure it doesnt have some wierd daily credit limit (which is the reason why I used the business account for all914)

Latest update on the Van.

The Valve cover arrived. But when they went to install the thing it was missing some special grommits that are needed to complete the warrentee repair. Phillip placed them on order. He assured me they would be in Wednesday and the van would be complete then.

Phillip also stated They test drove it a few times and it ran out fine. No problems with over heating, just the oil leak.

He is faxing me a copy of the invoice for review. I had ejm volenteer to verify the parts prices to be sure were not being charged on a metrix. Phillip stated he would be sure they are at least at MSR. We will receive a true discount based on real pricing.

We need to put this back into the hands of the pickup and delivery crew soon. The van is running. I'm just waiting for the outcome of the discount and my part is done.

I have spoken to a few people about getting down their to pick it up within a day or so notice. Worst case scenerio..if somebody cant drive me down.. I'll run down with the truck and trailer. You just tell me when to GO.

I'll be away from the computer tuesday night. I'm traveling Tuesday late in the day for a meeting in the MN Service Office (180 miles away) on Wednesday. The meeting is supposed to be done by around 1:30 pm central time. I'll call Phillip then if he doesn't call my cell. I'll post an update Wednesday night When I arrive home.

I'm assuming Phillip will fax the invoice yet today. If not I will bug him about it again tomorrow.

Sorry I'm late. I just opened this thread.
I just donated $50.00 through paypal.

Merry early Christmas Dave and Happy late Thanksgiving!!!

Steve

Thanks for the Kindness Steve. The Van is Nearly done. There is still an expense to move it up to Dave and his family. Your never too late. Just in the nick of time. clap56.gif

Posted by: shoguneagle Dec 1 2003, 08:51 PM

Brad, just let me know if you need a ride and to where; this retirement is making me "stir-crazy". If needed, I can move on a one day notice or less. Things are working out. Christmas can happen any day of the year. This a very, very nice thing that the contributors from all sources are making for Dave; even they are getting a xmas present by participating in this activity

Brad,

If needed, I can hop after two on Friday to either fetch the van from south or drive her up north over the weekend. Only bad part is that the wife with kids keeps the good car and i'm stuck with the bad one that can only be driven locally.

I can drive up the van and take the bus home if it can be factor in with the expense. I'm fully aware the van bill is a bit higher than the contribution so I might fork the expense to take a ride home....just let me know if I fit in the driving crew...as least I could help Dave out with my engery more than I can throw in cold cash....smile.gif

(We should probably have a separate thread to get the ride planned)

Brad, I too can do a day trip in either direction from the south bay. That is, we can easily run down and pick the sucker up and drive it back. There are occasional days I'm unavailable, but most days are filled with "movable work items."

Phillip was out at VW school today. I spoke with Tom his manager I guess. Tom stated they have trouble getting parts out of VW this time of year. He stated no parts of any kind showed today. I asked him to check the local FLAPS. He was to check into another source and call me back. I waited about 2 hours and called to follow up. I got voice mail. I left a message stating Brad was waiting for a call from me to confirm completion and I hoped to hear back on this today. It's 5:45 (central time) here and no call back yet. I called a local Import parts place here. If I discribed the part correctly there are 10 required for the valve cover. The local parts guy shows their supplier has 126 instock @ .12 ea. Truly a Dollar waiting on a dime. My one apprehension is my supplier wasn't looking at the correct part. The part # he showed is a porsche number 900-31-014-30 maybe ejm can shed some light on this.

How far is the drive? How much lead time do you need? 6:45 here and no call.

Posted by: Brad Roberts Dec 3 2003, 06:35 PM

It is 6 hour total drive one way. I need to leave here by noon to squeak in there by 6pm.

I can go on Friday.. but that is when I have help at the shop (Friday/Mondays) to get work done and I'm expecting some parts to be done by then also.

This weekend was/is a good weekend for me to drive to Seattle.. nothing planned for next weekend either.

Just got in and checked my voice mail. No messages from Tom. I did get info from Ed. (ejm)
My suspicion was right about my local parts guy looking up the wrong part. (can't blame a guy for trying, at least he tried) Ed (ejm)stated the remans are fitted with an up dated seal not usually found at the FLAPS. Also he confirmed the shut down cycle for VW. But also stated that he should start seeing parts in his service dept. tomorrow. So It looks like the van is there until VW decides to send the parts.

Sorry to hear about your Grand Father Dave. Looks like the dealer needs another week anyway confused24.gif

I am very sorry to hear that each of you have suffered a great loss in your families. My wife and I are with you during these hours of grief, and time is the great healer. we may have to share some *drugs* when I bring the van up happy11.gif I just hope this year will end on a higher note. I really need for next year to better than this has. The only positive things right now are the van and this club site. Everything else is in the shitter right now.

Thanks Jeroen and others.. I'm down to one grandmother (moms side) and I just spoke with/sat with her back in Oct. She is healthier than most of us and she has smoked for 60+ years and drank Cokes/Pepsi's. I think the reason she is fine.... she doesnt drive and has never had a drivers license clap56.gif ...LOL

You wanna stay here? I've still got your blanket. Brembo liked to lay on it, so I washed it for ya.
